John Mulaney's Grandma Schools Seth on Mispronouncing "Gerrymander"- Late Night with Seth Meyers
• John Mulaney's Grandma...
Late Night with Seth Meyers
/ latenightseth - Komedie
"Well everyone is wrong"
- My mother, everyday, about every single thing.
mine too ;-)
Did she tell you that you spelled every day wrong? :-)
Ashmita Nandy That's the spirit!
More savage than “one black coffee”
Ashmita Nandy
Well, your mother is right.
And sit up straight!
How old is John's Grandma? Her stories make it sound like she was there for the revolution.
Matt Gagon well I mean, John’s an immortal from the 1920’s
She sounds like a cool ass lady who has seen a lot! Made me curious so on a quick google search, I found that her dad the congressman lived from 1891 - 1949 (58 years old), her bro the congressman was born in 1917 (their dad was 32 at the time), and she had a son in 1951 (passed away last year at the age of 67).
Well john mulaney is from the early 1900s so that would make sense
That woman is the mother of all the founding fathers
She's 93.
I took a tour in Salem and it told us about the history of Salem and the lady driving the car to go get pizza was a story on the tour.
Boop Doop litttle did u know
SOMEONE ALERT MULANEY
I suppose that must've been the most exciting thing that happened in that town.
@@INTPTT Thats right, no other history in Salem Mass.

I swear John’s family are like different beings all together. They seem to have always had this strange formality that’s just wonderful😂
Mia Andreatta you just described wealthy New England WASPs.
The Fishing Family John Mulaney’s family is Irish Catholic though, so they can’t be WASPs (not Anglo-Saxon or Protestant)
Honey, even us Boston Irish Catholics have been WASPified. (And some, like me, are both.)
John’s parents are lawyers. One is a law professor. John is an English major. He’s the best!
I love how John and Seth interact. Seth is so good at what he does that if he starts to say something and it turns out that John wants to continue talking, Seth is immediately quiet and eagerly attentive. He lets his guest shine! If you've seen John on Jimmy Fallon's show, you know how Jimmy would talk on top of John, but there it was John who knew to just keep talking, as if nothing had happened. So the segment worked *despite* the host.
Jimmy's rude ass does that to every guest. He even adds stupid stuff to stories that people are trying to tell.
Yes!!
Cormia Marie And straight up repeats what they’ve said in a stupid exaggerated voice to reiterate or force a joke - but then just ruins it.
Carson tried to let his guest shine. These amateurs should take notes. If you are always trying to steal the attention then why bother with guest.
i’m so glad someone pointed this out because i was watching his jimmy fallon interview the other day and it’s so obnoxious how he handles guests. he had a comedian as a guest but interrupted them to unsuccessfully try to establish hisself as “the funny one”
"She went out to get pizza when it was new" will get me every time.
But you know - I remember when pizza WAS new - sensationally so. Mad Magazine was full of drawings and color illustrations of pizza being devoured with melted cheese drizzling down uncontrollably. MAD thought it was the funniest phenomenon ever to hit America.
His family stories are great because they are historical, yet stupid.
Just realized I'm related to John. George Bates is my grandfather's uncle!
Heather Przybycien lucky you!!! To be related to this tall child!
So that would make you 3rd cousins
You have a new fun fact about yourself!
That's cool! My cousin is married to David Bowie's cousin. That's my tenuous connection to stardom.
send him a handwritten letter claiming you’re related and that you demand the secret to immortality
Went thru the usual round of CZcams Mulaney clips, and then stumbled on new stuff?! Gonna be a great day
I thought I was the only one sifting for unviewed John Mulaney material :)
hollaname And John Oliver on Colbert!
I was on a Stanhope binge until I found this.
aah so relatable, there is just not enough John Mulaney videos on here, its a good day when theres a new one
hollaname a rabbit hole I am happy to go down...that doesn’t sound right?!
Get you someone who laughs at your jokes the way Seth laughs at John's jokes.
John speaks about the 1940’s and 60’s like he wasn’t around since the early 1900’s
Nobody tell his grandma about GIFs.
SuperStingray 😂😂😂
I dont know how this isn't the top comment!
Well most people pronounce the G correctly as in "Gallon" (not "Giraffe") so there's no issue :)
@@cutapacka4 that's actually the wrong way to pronounce it but ok (look it up pls)
@@nikelatt Based on grammar, it is the correct way. I don't care what the "creator" claims, if the abbreviated word has a hard G then so should the acronym.
John Mulaney could host and cohost and guest star all by himself
Isn’t that what stand-up is though hahahah?
and i would watch
Check out the one where him and Andy Samberg filled in for Jimmy Kimmel
This story explains the political upbringing of John's father, Charles Mulaney, incredibly well. #oneblackcoffee
John Bonini You have the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair.
The other shoe just dropped.
So we agree that this is *your* toothbrush.
How are *you* better than a *nazi?*
God can't hear you
the best storyteller in the world
tymd130 nope. Far from
"Because it's the one thing they can't replace!"
Nope. That's Dan Carlin.
y’all need to chill out, it was just an opinion
I am in love with this man. John has been my favorite comedian ever since I stumbled upon his special New in Town at about 4am on a hot summer night & I just couldn't sleep because of my grandma's snoring (she was visiting and I offered to room with her). I was barely graduating high school. I fell asleep before it finished and I couldn't find it after that... fast forward 3 yrs later to my junior year in college and it was on Netflix. I recognized that tall child in a blue suit immediately. John Mulaney's comedy got me through dark times and I am always going to be supportive of his work. Seth, thank you for having him on your show.
samababyyy I love this. Thank you for commenting. A special person in my life is going through rough times, and he loves John Mulaney so much. This gives me hope that he’ll make it through.
His nana needs a show of her own...
patrialibre12 no.
Mark Anthony 😂
I love his Nana, too.
This is the whitest nonsense I have ever heard, and even that will not deter me from loving this Tall Child so much.
Kari H 😂😂😂
Karina H 😂😂😂
No he is Asian-american 😂😂
Habiba Helal with feminine hips.
Habiba Helal omg yes
Holy crap! Nana is correct, and I've been mispronouncing it my whole life. Thank you, Nana. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering
No, you haven't. Either is a correct pronunciation. Correctness is determined by native speakers' usage, and not prescribed.
Reading that I also just discovered the word "portmanteau". Thank you Nana!
She is correct but it “wrong” pronunciation is now the normal. I say like this. The pronunciation of gerrymandering is like everything else about it: just plain wrong. And then it makes sense that the pronunciation is wrong because of course it is.
JOHN MULANEY'S GRANDMA IS CORRECT ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PRONUNCIATION OF GERRYMANDERING. This time, everyone else actually is wrong. The Library of Congress will tell you so:
blogs.loc.gov/law/2017/02/elbridge-gerry-and-the-monstrous-gerrymander/
Also, John Oliver explained it in the "Gerrymandering" episode of Last Week Tonight. Here:
czcams.com/video/A-4dIImaodQ/video.html
Remember, at that time, new information was mostly communicated in print (without a voice to narrate the pronunciation) and then further spread by people repeating it by mouth, so it makes sense that the correct pronunciation of new words or lesser-known words would get lost along the way as the info was distributed in written form and passed along within communities by people who (understandably) incorrectly repeated it out loud to others. It's not at all surprising that the term became popularly mispronounced with a "J" sound instead of a hard "G" sound, since the MORE COMMON pronunciation for people whose names are spelled G-E-R-R-Y is the same as the pronunciation for the name "Jerry." But Mulaney is correct in that, nowadays, everyone - even politicians - pronounces it "Jerry-mandering."
that's cool, I was just about to look it up, you saved me some time
....The More You Know
:)
She is right but I don't care enough about it to switch and look like an ass and have to explain it to everybody. Bringing it up as a fun fact on the other hand....
The real villain here is the outrageous concept of a 'soft g'. That doesn't need to be a thing when you have a perfectly serviceable 'j' lying around!
John mulaney on one show and John oliver on another. . Couldn't have asked for more
Shietal Ramesh it‘s truly a good day :)
Shietal Ramesh *Jon Oliver
No, you're thinking of Jon Stewart. Oliver does spell it "John."
Both have addressed the pronunciation of gerrymandering now
I’m from Marblehead and everybody here is a stickler about the “correct” pronunciation of Gerrymandering ie Elbridge Gerry
Facts
wait I'm from marblehead too, this is so weird
“That looks like a salamander.”
“No, it’s a gerrymander.”
Never gonna forget this. 😂
To me it was always told like this “the pronunciation of Gerrymandering is just like everything else about gerrymandering- completely wrong! That’s why we say jerrymander even though it’s named after Eldridge Gerry”. I’m not just if that makes your hometown feel better but that’s what I told about the pronunciation.
I'd watch an hour long special of John telling stories from and about his grandma.
I freaking love pronouncing things correctly and learning word origins. Thanks Nana! And I agree, everyone is often wrong!
Usage not prescription decides correctness. That’s why you didn’t say something like “I doth agree....” and instead you started a sentence with the word “and”! Everyone literally decides based on usage what’s right and wrong. So by definition when it comes to language “everyone” is right. Even when they are historically inaccurate. That’s why we say “ask” instead of the more historically accurate “ax a question” and we pronounce Knight as “night” not as the more historically accurate “ka night”.
As you were.
Please invite his grandma as a guest!!
Sarah Fowler no please dont
Knowing john's cadence is inspired by his grandma's really makes everything make so much sense
John Mulaney is one of my favorite humans.
Johns Nana 2020!!!
bronaghmca Ooh no, as someone raised exactly like he was... you don’t want angry, old Irish Catholics in government. They may be for gay marriage, but they want the rest of us to suffer!!
only republican i would ever even CONSIDER voting for
I bet John’s grandmother was horrified that John said Eldridge rather than his actual first name: Elbridge.
He is the funniest guy!
I love his Nana voice so much
I've started to think that John would be good at narrating a history program. He's so good at storytelling and he has that old time radio voice.
wooooooo northshore massachusetts talk. i'm from beverly and i'm here for it
Ask your Nana how to pronounce Gif.
This guy is Fantastic!
Smokedship who is he
The video says his name.
I love all of his interviews
John Mulaney is my absolute favorite forever
We need to have John's nana interviewed live!
Reminds me of my dad's elderly cousin ranting about the stupidity of "shrimp fajitas" and "chicken fajitas" -- " 'fajita' comes from 'faja,' for skirt steak. Chicken and shrimp don't have skirts!"
Omg that was one of the most fascinating chats on late nite ever.
This was the best thing I’ve seen all week.
Man this kid talks like an old man. It is hilarious.
I love the way John talks.
This is GOLD.
John Milan’s always interrupts 🤣🤣🤣🤣💖💖💖
Love him!
can't wait to see him next week!!!
wow - I just got schooled - thanks John's Grandma!
"Well, everyone is wrong." 😂😂😂
His first name is actually Elbridge, with a b. Not Eldridge with a d. LOL. So Mr. Mulaney is still wrong, but I am sure his Grandmother has pointed that out by now.
Those crazy Democrats and their wild parties.
Nana Mulaney saves pronunciation
Thank you sir thank you John. There’s no more to say. Thank you South.
This man is pure comedy
I miss hearing hour long specials from this tall child
Julia S me too bruh
I am also related to the Bates’! My great-grandfather, Master, was their cousin. Small world.
I bet your great grandfather was loads of fun...
Love this guy haha
I pronounced it like his Nana all my life 😂
His Nana impression is also a great Justice Breyer impression.
That makes... so much sense.
Why is The Flash talking to Seth?
I'm _so_ glad I'm not the only one who thinks this whenever I see him in a thumbnail... 😄 However you did make a small spelling error. It's not the Flash, it's the ⚡️Flash⚡️.
pixel girl That is really cool.
Haha *snort* I JUST realized that...and I'm a fan of both.
Christian Schoff, hehe thank you! I've been a bit spoilt on a Mac, which for some years has had an excellent emoji picker popup window (accessible with ctrl+cmd+space). Apparently last year Windows got one too, accessible with the windows key plus a dot or semicolon, and Linux has several solutions. I gotta admit, despite being a tech nerd I did _not_ warm to emojis at first, they reminded me of the almost always hideous automatic emoticon replacement in many 2000s messenger apps, but I was fully converted when I discovered the most amazing emoji of all... 🖖 Live long, and prosper, fellow nerds.
That's not the Flash, it's a tall child, and he looks terrible!
Mulaney’s Nanna seems awesome, I would love to hear more stories about her.
just today morning I look up the word gerrymandering in the dictionary, and in the evening I was recommended this video, coincidence?
I just know he felt very self-conscious about those thumbs up afterwards.
William Bates and Bill Bates. Masters in their field.
They are master Bates
“Yes, that one” lol
I love the Massachusetts representation
I love that Salem, Massachusetts got some claps
I finally understand why he talks like that, his whole family is an white American documentary
knew about the gerrymander from john oliver, recommend his special about it, including pronunciation and pictures.
What an excellent guest!
Chantel Vanderveen he’s ok
My AP Human Geography class just went over gerrymandering and I remembered this video omg😭😭
I love the history
Damn Barry, fucking up the timeline again...
Did he say their moms are in a quarterly review called “Pills A’Poppin’?” 🤣
whoa- everyone is wrong though....People need to know.
The greatness of this is that I could see it being either completely true or completely made up.
Nana: a million
you: zero
It’s kinda funny when you click a random video and they start talking about the town you live in
Salem. Not Marblehead. Definitely not Marblehead
MHD is way better
I was born and lived in Salam Massachusetts 1979-86.
John Mulaney's family is kewl
The guy being interviewed is the guy who should be doing the interview.
She's my new hero.
thanks, nana
Mulaney's a national treasure.
can't wait to see him on SNL in 2 weeks
Serious business!
His nanna is wonderful.
Ingeborg Anne Rakvåg... You're gorgeous!!! Happy Valentine's.
Oh thank you so much! Sorry about not responding until now; I didn't get a notification.
This is great. Like with today's insanity of politics, this is what any comedy about politics should be
John’s Nanna is my favorite old woman and I dont even know what she looks like.
garymander vs gerrymander is the new gif vs jif
Well I could say where they went wrong with the family that is. The comedians are most excellent. 😉☺️😉
*one black coffee*
Nana is right!
"So, that's town gossip still."
HAHAHAHAHA
-seth
a whole history lesson. i feel like im watching hamilton. im not completely following, but hes like related to a bunch famous historical figures
my last name is also bates... lol
so much of what he says is too smart for the audience
How so?
Mulaney has an old soul, and it's all over his humor style. Most millennials have no point of reference for it...sad.
No, its not, and you're not smarter than the audience.
lmao never said I was
it's clear that his references are super obscure and only a handful in the audience gets them. chillllllllllll
moiraine_damodred I had to go back and rewatch it just to make sure I didn’t miss one of these ‘super obscure’ references. Nope, it’s all pretty accessible stuff.
I LIVE IN THAT MASSACUSETTS TOWN OH MY GOD
And we learn about this in school
oh my god we probably go to the same school
haha
