Hi everyone! Thank you for checking one more project of mine. On this one I was reached out by Parts Express to see if I could assemble one of their DIY boombox speaker kits that they have. This kit has incredible value for what it provides. The kit includes:
• CNC Cut Plywood Enclosure
• TPS3116D2 Class D 2.1 Bluetooth 5.0 Amplifier Board
• Dayton Audio DCS165-4 6-1/2" Classic Subwoofer 4 Ohm
• Dayton Audio DS215-PR 8" Designer Series Passive Radiator
• Dayton Audio LBB-3 3 x 18650 Lithium Battery Charger Board/Module 12V
• 2 x Dayton Audio ND25TA-4 1" Titanium Dome Neodymium Tweeter
• 2 x Dayton Audio DSA90-8 3" Aluminum Cone Full-Range Driver 8 Ohm
• Wire, Hardware, and Other Components
Crossover Components:
• 2 x Dayton Audio DNR-8.0 8 Ohm 10W Precision Audio Grade Resistor
• 2 x Dayton Audio 1.00mH 20 AWG Air Core Inductor Crossover Coil
• 2 x Dayton Audio 0.10mH 20 AWG Air Core Inductor Crossover Coil
• 2 x Dayton Audio DMPC-1.5 1.5uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor
• 4 x Dayton Audio DMPC-3.3 3.3uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor
As you can see the kit includes many high-quality components for the speaker. The enclosure itself is made of precisely CNC cut 1/2 inch plywood.
I'll start the speaker assembly process by inserting the speaker terminals on the side panels of the enclosure, making sure the cables with crimp terminals will be inside the separate woofer enclosure. Using the wire stripper / crimp tool (in the tools list above) I cut and crimp two pieces of wire for the woofers. Make sure you use to of the larger terminals for the midrange speakers.
I then cut two pieces of MDF for the crossovers that would nicely fit on the bottom of the enclosure once assembled. Drilled the holes for the screws and marked the same locations accordingly on the bottom panel. I also drilled two holes next to the charging port hole for the power LEDs and I cut a small piece of plywood for the battery level LEDs.
Before assembling the enclosure I routed the inside of the amplifier panel - not necessary but makes it look neat and removes sharp edges.
For gluing the enclosure I used plain PVA wood glue and a brush to spread it along the edges.
Once the enclosure has dried, I used an orbital sander to make it nice and smooth. After that I routed and sanded the outer edges of the enclosure.
I used a few screws as stands while spraying the enclosure. I started by wiping any dust with a tack cloth and spraying the front panel with matt clear coat.
I then soldered the crossover components for which you can find the schematic in the kit purchase link. Using the amazing TS-100 soldering iron I connected the wires to the crossover and placed them inside the enclosure.
Important step of the build is to seal any holes that the air inside the enclosure could leak through. I covered the LEDs with a bit of silicone to make sure of that. I also used double sided tape for sealing the amplifier plate and the battery LED panel.
Once all the components wire wired, I mounted the speaker drivers, charged the speaker using the provided power brick and gave the speaker a test.
I can honestly say that this 2.1 boombox sounds amazing. It is currently my go to speaker for everyday listening and small parties. The camera microphone that I use for testing does not do its justice but the speaker truly has some powerful bass and clear soundstage.
I hope you will give this speaker build a try and as always feel free to leave any comments or questions!
Thanks!

Hi, I'm from Taiwan. This speaker has great bass. I hope to exceed 200,000 subscribers. You can do it. Come on.😁
You are an audio engineer who has mastered the job
Would not call myself that, but thanks!
it is a different feeling when you know you built it yourself
It really is!
I'm building one myself and i know what it is
Awesome! 👍. I love your videos because you do not add any background music.
Thank you!! 🙏
Speakers that are originally made by you, are awesome.
Thanks a lot! 🙏
I built one of these and really love it. I opted for the big (26650 cell) 5 battery option. Biggest problem was fitting the power supply board. If mounted to the floor, the woofer and passive radiator would not fit. So I separated the battery holders from the board, mounted them separately to a plate and mounted in the space between the midrange and tweeters. Then ran wires from each separate battery holder back to the board. Finished product has great sound and is very loud!
Thank you for sharing! I chose the bigger 5 battery option as well. I did not have any issues mounting the woofer or the PR against the board. Only one connection was touching the magnet of the sub. Indeed, the finished speaker sounds great and plays quite loud.
How do you wire the battery board to the amp? I'm also using the bigger battery board too and when I turn the volume up the speakers cut out. Making me think I've not wired it up properly
26650 are big and annoying to work with i feel you (sry im not from us excuse my bad grammar)
If you're looking at the front of the box. I mounted on the left wall, touching the bottom, and touching the back wall. Clears the tweeter and everything else. I accidentally used the smaller width batteries so not sure if the bigger ones cause an issue
i have been looking into this, thinking about building one but i came across a few complaints. main two are the mids and tweeters are to close together to install grills on the mids, and the amp being advertised as a 200w amp doesn't come with all you need to make it 200w. and would want to use for work but would need good protection for all of the speakers and the passive on the back. I dont really want to trial and error my way to a finish. would it be nice if a list of optional add on parts was listed in the notes or something like that.
joossss 👍👍👍 mantap
Отлично, как всегда! 👍🏻
Thanks! 🙏
Good boss. Like build part 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍
Thank you 🤗
Omg..this is awesome..👍😄
Haha, thanks! 😄
Ótimo projeto, parabéns....
Thank you!
Really Nice 🔥👍
Thank you! 😄

Nice speakers
Haha, thanks!
Awesome Video! Thank You 👍🏻
You're welcome! Was my pleasure assembling this kit.
This is also my amplifier that I ordered TPA3116 2.1 channel, soon I will imitate your project :)
Awesome! Would love to see your project once finished.
@Donny Terek
I'm trying to wire everything up and I have the same larger battery board you have.
Did I need to purchase extra wiring to be able to wire it to the amplifier board?
Maybe I'm missing them.
Thanks for the help.
Hi!
Only a length of wire is needed to provide power from the battery board to the amplifier. It comes with the speaker kit.
Hope this helps.
Wow
I was expecting lots of passive radiators, but this is great too
Why need lots of them when you can have one that's huge 😁
@@DonnyTerek expectations: ok, another boombox type of build, perhaps they'll add 10 or 20 passive radiators this time?
Reality: wow, so they're not adding 30 passive radiators. finally some original diy shit with actual drivers.
Haha, exactly 😄
I got experience with wood jobs, but i'm a absolute beginner in electronics. I order'd a arduino & df player and i hope i can build a mobile box like your's. How long got yor batterys power to play it?
Nice job & thanks 4 the ideas 😎👍
Thank you, Matthias!
Not much experience needed to assemble this kit, if none. It plays for around 12 hours.
Nice video Donny! How hard would it be to install a chromecast audio inside and some way to power it off the same power source/batteries?
Thank you!
It would actually be a pretty simple install and possible to power it off the same battery used for the speaker though I'm not sure if it would cause any ground loop noise due to the same power supply being shared (though easy to overcome). Personally I would keep the speaker as it is and only include an Aux port so the Chromecast can be connected without any complex wiring needed. The amplifier has an Aux port integrated.
Do some coating and colouring
Please kind sir. I used 6 passive radiators, why do I not have sound?
;)
Did the upgraded batteries give you more power to the speakers ? And whats the max DB level?
Yes, the larger battery pack definitely gives more power with almost double the voltage. I did not measure the max output.
อยากได้จังเลยครับหาซื้อที่ไหนครับ
So you get like 10 minutes play time at full volume?
For battery?
you should build a waterproof speaker box with 5v usb out for people to strap on motorbike back seat it would be awesome
Sound like a cool idea!
How does this compare to the jbl partybox 100 or Sony gtkxb90?
Did not compare to those speakers since I don't have any.
Hello Donny. I'm from Brazil, my name is Vanderley. I really liked this boombox box, you are very skillful, do you sell this kit with all the wooden pieces cut to size and also together with the electronic components? How much is the value of the kit and shipping to Brazil? Thanks.
Hi! This kit is provided by Parts Express, links included in the description. Since I don't sell these kits myself, I recommend you check out this kit which can be delivered internationally: bit.ly/3hTSwgm
How are yall getting these but all of the kits are out of stock
At least this kit is still in stock.
Keep checking back on a regular basis, grab one when they are in stock.
any good websites to get good speakers with low prices ? using car speakers sounds dumb so i need speakers that are has low wattage per speaker to make a setup that can work on batteries....
Hi! Check Parts Express or Sound Imports. Links in the description.
i ordered a battery pack that has 24 x 18650 on Batteryhookup , after seeing the video, i think i have to many of them now
Thank you very much
Good job overall but tweeters are not well placed; you should have placed them on top of the front panel to garantee the better treble dispersion
Thanks! This speaker was designed by experts and the tweeter placement was chosen due to limited space in the enclosure of the speaker where midrange drivers were placed.
do you remember approx how much weight is added to the passive radiator?
4 washers is recommended on the passive radiator, each weighing 15g.
What is that volume knob Transpirant plate called 9:02
very cool wish you success and make more videos, and you can sell it on the e-commerce site to earn some capital and buy more video components.
Thank you!
What is crossover and what is use of it . If u explain more about electronics parts more it would have been awesome . Please also add more weigh to electronical explanation as well rather than wood craft !
You can find all the necessary info on how to build the kit in the link.
can i have access to your workstation? got two 6,5 inch subs, 4 midrange drivers and 8 tweeters. makeshift diamondboxx perhaps?
Hey absolutely! 😄 Would love to build one.
@@DonnyTerek Fat chance. Move it all to Norway first
😅😅
Nice. I have been looking at these and other "kits" for some time now.
It is very hard to tell what they may sound like.
Can anyone tell me honestly if they sound as good or better then say a JBL at the same price point?
Hi Derek, thank you for the comment.
The sound test using my camera mic truly does not do the speaker's justice by compressing the audio recording. I am not sure if it sounds better than a JBL at the same price point since the kit does not use any software for enhancing sound quality (boosting bass at low volume level, etc.) but it still sounds great having the tone controls. Most DIY kits can hardly compete with the price to quality ratio of factory speakers but I guess the kits are more of a satisfactory result for being able to build your own speaker.
@@DonnyTerek Thank you for taking the time to get back.
I agree that it is very satisfying to build something, and I am certainty not trying to take away from that.
Some of these mini amps do have a DSP option or accessory board I see. I would like to know more about them.
Carpentry is in my wheelhouse. The electronics, not so much. Other then watching videos like this one and following a parts list. Not a lot of info to be found for `the new guy`` Any help in the right direction would be very appreciated. (I shy away from this kit because I feel I can make a better box and I am not a fan of the passive radiator.) I would still like to have the 2.1 and portability.
No problem! Hope you make a good choice for the speaker you will build. Glad I could help.
apakah anda dari indonesia...
Hey! I want to make my own! But, i want the sub to have enough space so it sounds nice. Whats the measurements on the box if you have them?😄
Hi! Unfortunately I don't have the internal measurements for the box myself. You can try checking the questions-answers section on the listing of this kit to see if any measurements are provided.
@@DonnyTerek Good tip! ill do that. Where are you from if you mind i ask? Maybe we live in the same contry! Im building by own boombox, like the one in you 150W bluetooth speaker video, and i thougt asking if you would mind giving some tips!
How many times in playing time?
Around 8-12 hours.
60 w MAX...
Is the Blast Box better than the JBL Boombox?
I haven't tested it against a JBL Boombox, but I suspect the JBL couldn't match the subwoofer output of the Blast Box.
Klow mau pesan bisa g bang
Di jual brp om
sehr schön gemacht, aber braucht man nicht wirklich. wer ein auto hat, der hat meißt auch musik drin.
und niemand läuft zu fuß mit dieser riesen box herum.
Thank you! If Google translate did a good job, if I wanted to listen to some music at home I would need to park my car inside? I guess that's what portable speakers are for 😄
who doesn't need something awesome like this lil BoomBox 😍
who have the size of the boxe please ?
You can check the description and reviews of the kit on Parts Express link (in the description).
Thua pháp sư việt nam 😂
mhm so $249 for kit; $36.32 for rest of speaker parts(5pcs-batteries, battery holder, cables) and $6.32 Materials(Carbon fiber vinyl, Acoustic foam, 3mm double-sided tape). Total $291.74 for all the parts including kit without shipping and tax including current sale price. So it would be around the $310 mark including tax and shipping depending on what shipping speed you choose.
Not exactly. The speaker kit for $249 comes with batteries and the battery board included. Shipping is free if you are lucky to be in the States. I opted for a larger battery board for better performance but its not necessary. I'd say this kit is of great value for the price.
@@DonnyTerek Oh ok
Please giveaway it to me
Bro can you give me this speaker for free 😅😅
I'm not understand your connection 😂
You can find the wiring diagram in the product link.
Компановка дрянь.. Басовик в пол и будет компактный. Басовику все равно куда пердеть. 😊
