  • It's time to check compression and then yank the motor out of the boat.

MICHAEL - Enjoy your videos and those shop uniforms. Will be looking forward to video #4 on the retrofit of the 165 Mercruiser outdrive. I also went through a 20 ft 1968 Power Cat with a 160 Mercruiser I/O. You finished yours in approx 1 hour of videos and I had to take two years to complete. (joke) Worth mentioning the greatest gain in performance is when it went to a stainless steel prop. Faster to go on plane and better top speed. With eight Girl Scouts onboard still jumped out on plane. The old aluminum prop would not do it. Keep up the great videos. Little tips now and then really count. Like making carb lead seal balls from lead with a propane torch. Happy sailing. - Rich

biggest problem i see is the cylinder is about a foot longer so your front mount will have to be moved in the boat. you had waaaaay to much fun surfing!!!

I really do, something about a car engine quality powerplant that builds trust and ease of working it. Problem most people have is they bought and I/O that is over 30 years old and expect it to be like new. Just like 30 year old cars, they require maintenance.

Is there a way to remove the steering cable without having to take the motor out? I have the same motor on my 1970 StarCraft. I needa new cables but my tools just won’t fit back there

What's it cost in your area to haul those old hulls to the dump?
Costs around $150 in my neck of the woods
I have one I will be getting rid of soon but may just hack it up with a chainsaw and put the remains in the big construction dumpster out Village has for we citizens Of Colfax IL..LOL

Gday mate what was actually wrong with the hull ? ,i have done a number of restos on boats coming to the end of my 5th now i know your a motor man but you could get some money back for the hull shurly if you dont want it i mean even the windscreen is worth something to someone restoring one of those replacing transom is not hard good video that engine reminds me of a holden 6 cylinder they used to come in 163 179 and 186 then a 202 straight 6 easy as to work on some were marinised for use in boats almost identical .

There are so many boat hulls around here you can get for low dollars, for me to restore for myself it has to be a really cool old boat like my 1972 Glasspar I restored a few years back. The boat cost me over $5,000 in materials and parts and it could be sold for about $1500 so restoring old boats around here is not a profitable option. I fix them to keep them. Now this old Rinker had an engine that I like and I had to give $200 for the whole thing, so that is why one of my favorite boats is going to get an upgrade. The old glass is something that someone could use but the odds of someone needing that glass for that old boat is slim and it's not worth the hassle of removing and or shipping. Thanks for watching
