  • I'm sure you're all curious as to how my Fairmont caught on fire. In this video I provide a detailed explanation of what happened so that you can avoid the same fate.
    In case you missed that video, here's a link: • Oh Sh%*#!! The Fairmon...
    I think what's really important here is that I had a fire extinguisher handy in my car. I have fire extinguishers in all of my vehicles for situations just like this. Had I not had a fire extinguisher, I might be making a video about how to start over after you've burned your project vehicle to the ground.
    I'm very glad I'm not making that video.

      Yeah I need to buy one. Snapped a factory plastic fuel line on my project car, thankfully it was turnef off at the time and I saw it snap. Come to find out that fuel line has been responsible for countless engine fires and should have been recalled but never was.

      P Schmied First aid kit is mandatory in Germany and even checked during inspection every two years. Fire extinguisher is not, but this very much reminds me to check when mine did expire...
      Think I have to get a new one.
      Only problem I see with extinguishers, most people will not know how to use them and likely make a mess without getting the fire out. I was lucky to learn how to use one while working at an airport, and other than futile attempts I have seen before, Eric seems to know how to use it.

Way too many people (again like myself) take the attitude of “I’ll be alright.” After seeing this, I never want to be caught in this situation and having to run to my kitchen sink for an extinguisher. Good work and being safe Eric

    Hey, Eric. I went to a firefighting school when I was younger. A basic rule for using a fire extinguisher for liquid fuel fires is you empty it if you discharge it at all. As you saw, you did not initially extinguish the fire, and you needed more powder to smother it. This can be very dangerous with liquid fuel fires. Say you need 3/4 a tank to smother a fire. You spray half and stop. The fire spreads right back to the fuel. Now you need 3/4 a tank again, but you only have half left. ALWAYS empty the fire extinguisher on to liquid fire.

    • @ETCG1
      @ETCG1  Před 6 lety +2

      I'm not saying you're wrong, but something tells me you've never cleaned up after a dry chemical fire extinguisher discharge in an engine compartment. If you had, you would use as little as possible. Thanks for your input.

    • @HighestRank
      @HighestRank Před 6 lety +1

      That's because the dry powder clogs the valve from closing and if you think it's reusable because there's still chemicals inside, you are most mistaken.

    Back in 1980, Car and Driver Magazine featured a project car using a Ford Fairmont like yours as the subject ("Project Fairmont"). They installed Recaro seats, a killer sound system, and some other electronic doo-dads which I can't remember 38-years-on, and the result was an electrical fire starting somewhere in the add-on wiring. The car was then re-named "Project Firemont", and abandoned at that point. Thanks for taking me back to my teen years, and I'm glad no serious damage resulted to either you or the car.

    Bad news: Screwed up and had an unwanted fire.
    Good news: Caught it in time and was prepared enough to quickly put it out, so no real damage.
    Better news: Wasn't too embarrassed to relay the whole event as it was recorded. Now others can learn from his mistake.
    As they say, knowing is half the battle.

      FAB Automotive Detailing I've seen a DMC Delorian only 2 times, perhaps 3 times here in Jersey. Back in '99 while I was in electrical engineering evening classes in Nutley, NJ I was working for a company called Access Direct in Lodi, NJ. There was a small shop next door, one of the bay doors was open one day I was walking by. They had one with the hatch open and I got to see the engine running reminded me of one of those old air cooled German things from back in the day even though I don't know if it was/is air cooled or not, I don't follow those cars. Coolest car I've ever stepped into was a Lotus Exige S with the turbo charged 2.2L Toyota 4 cyl. I've also been in a Porsche GT3 RS and some other crazy cars. I used to detail Bentleys too, only thing I can remember about them aside from the price tag is the paint on them sucks, not very durable IMO.

      Leonel Ventura I’m a mechanic full time and side Detailer. I worked at a Shop here in Indiana that worked on nothing but high end imports. Ferrari,Porsche,Lamborghini,Aston Martin,Bentley and so on. Some how we ended up with the Delorean repair and it’s been a while but I don’t know why we took it on. They are weird to work on and drive like crap at least the one we had did. They electrical system was weird because ground was actually positive and positive was ground. Glad I only worked on one once.

    Eric, I know this feeling all too well. One day I was working on my truck; It was a bit older than the one you have. The fuel pressure regulator had failed, and was spraying fuel all in the intake manifold. I chose to work on it right after I got back from a drive. To make a long story short, fuel sprayed from the failed pressure regulator and caught fire. I tried to use a fire extinguisher, but it had failed. I'm glad you were able to have a quick reaction the way you did and prevent damage. As for me, one day I'll get to rebuild my truck.

      If the fuel pressure guage had the max for his regulator at 75% of the scale instead of 100%, he would have caught it going wrong much earlier. (Ok to have multiple gages with different ranges for the same thing too. One for overall system, and another for fine adjusting.)The other mistake was trusting a busy parts company to not screw up an order.

    Great video. I'm new to turbo's and such and the way you explained how everything happened was phenomenal, so thank you. Even though it was the fuel system (obviously) I was curious how it could have filled the intercooler and come put the pipe. I like the Fairmont videos because it gives me ideas, makes my brain explore other possibilities. I'm putting a turbo on my 04 dakota 4.7 and it helps with the way you explains things. I'm a welder/fabricator by trade but have been fooling with vehicles with my dad since I was a kid. I always learn something new here, so again, thank you. P.s. good job putting the fire out

    The vapour coming off the fuel spraying out of the intercooler piping is what set the car alight. Fuel vapour is much easier to ignite and requires much less temperature, the carby being open and the back fires provided a nice ignition source for all that fuel. Eek... something that could have gone completely sour real quick. Nice work on saving the car Eric, would have really sucked to have wasted all that effort.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 Před 6 lety +5

      Not just easier to ignite - vapour is the only thing that ignites. And if the exhaust manifold was hot (as Eric implied), that would certainly get a bunch to vapourize _really_ quickly. Add that to the flames in the carb...and he's one lucky guy to get off this easy. :-)

    I couldn't figure out how all that fuel got into the intercooler ... but as soon as I heard you say the engine hydro locked, that was the AHH-HAA moment! Glad you have cat-like reflexes like myself -saved you a pile of money! Remember .. these things can ALWAYS be much, much worse ... especially if the garage catches .. which is also attached to the house! Happened to a couple buddies of mine in the day.
    I've had 2 close calls with fire, but both were electrically related, not fuel. First one was in a '71 C20 - it was 2am, and I had just finished hooking up the plug wires on a brand spankin' new engine. I was tired ... but one half my brain said, "Lets go for a quick ride!" ... the other half said, " BAD idea - get some sleep, and test it out in daylight". Guess which one I listened to? Fired her up, and warmed it up good. Threw it in gear, and off I went! I was excited! Laid into it a bit to feel the torque of that fresh motor. I got about 200 yards up the road, when suddenly everything went dark ... and QUIET instantly. "Oh shit!" Knew this wasn't going to be good. Could hear sizzling. Pitch dark out, yanked open the hood, and suddenly it was daytime! Big fire around the battery, and down the right side of the engine. In my haste, I left the positive cable laying right on the passenger side header - forgot to secure it! All 600A of smoke was released from the battery and the cable. Melted the copper into little balls - I still have that cable hanging in my barn as a reminder to keep my head screwed on correctly. No fire extinguisher. Put the fire out with dirty snow from the side of the road. I had just painted the engine, an of course it got just hot enough to make it tacky again. What a mess! Would've been the first nice looking part of any vehicle I had owned up until then, now it was all covered in crap in less than a minute!!
    Second fire wasn't as spectacular, but it sure got my heart pumping! Driving down the road on a hot, humid, rainy summer afternoon. Had the floor vents open on my '72 El Camino, with the A/C (under dash unit) and defroster on to clear all the moisture out of the car. Well, that additional amp load of 2 large motors running, plus the wipers and headlights, was too much for the poor insulation between one of my ammeter wires. Same scenario - everything went dead and quiet instantly. Then my buddy started freaking out, "YOU GOT A FIRE MAN!!", as we're coasting 40 mph down the road. Right between my legs too! I got the car stopped damn quick for having no power assist, yanked open the hood, and ripped the emergency disconnect key out of the negative cable. Ran back to the car and started blowing furiously on the fire - it went out!! No fire extinguisher that time either ... Got lucky on that one! Cat-like reflexes, FTW! 🤣

    Eric, sorry to hear about the fire, but am glad that no one got hurt. Also glad that you were able to put it out so fast. Reminds me of a friend's car, he had an 80 Granada with the inline 6 and auto. It also had a very leaky rear main seal. He was on his way home one day, the oil caught fire off of the exhaust. Fire Dept got there and put it out in time. He replaced the seal and continued to drive that car. I called it the "Energizer rabbit" due to all the things that happened to it, but it would not die. Left ball joint popped out one day just off the freeway. Gas tank fell out another day, put it back in temporarily with bungie cords. The aforementioned fire. An accident to the right front, damaged the fender, but did not damage the bumper. That car kept going, like the Energizer bunny. That was back in the late 80's.

    My 98 Astro van burned to the ground just last week. It was a title-less play toy that had got stuck on my land. I had been revving the crap out of it to get it unstuck, but gave up and walked back over to my house. Few min later I heard popping, looked over and the whole engine bay was in flames. No water hose to reach and no extinguisher cost me a brand new $200 battery (worth more than the van...)

    I gotta tell you Eric, I've never been so glad to be a bit paranoid and make such a ridiculous mess as I did than to have and use a fire extinguisher.
    I was disassembling a broken Microsoft Surface I had from work to see what was wrong and if I could fix it, and something went wrong, and a fully charged lithium ion dragon blew its flames at me. Feeling it getting hot fast I took it to the kitchen and tossed it on the stove, and in the moment I took to turn around, grab the extinguisher, and turn back, it had gone up in flames. It took weeks to get all the powder out of the kitchen, but it was the best mess I ever made.
    I'm really happy for you that you had it, it was handy, and that the worst that happened was a mess.

    I had to put out a titanium fire on my mill. The powdered extinguisher that I used, sent that damn powder into the nearby computer, shorted the internals, and killed it. That fire extinguisher powder becomes electrically conductive when it's heated. Thus my move over to a CO2 fire extinguisher.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 Před 6 lety +1

      That's rather surprising, as dry chemical extinguishers are rated for electrical fires - in fact, the class C rating in the US specifically means the extinguishing agent will not conduct electricity. Not that the powder can't damage a computer, but it's _very_ unlikely that it actually caused a short.

      Aussiebloke609 It's unbelievable until it happens to you. Class C is for electricity, not electronics. That's why server rooms use Halon and other gases so the electronics don't get ruined from the extinguishing process.

    Just a couple of points. You need a Schrader valve on that thing so you can check your fuel pressure. This would have avoided your spill. Second point, you need some pulse dampening. That noise you hear is the fuel hammering on the regulator spring and it's check valve this will cause premature failure. It also causes inconsistent fuel to the carburetor though the fuel rail helps.
