    Nils this was awesome! There is a massive hole in windsurfing content when it comes any intermediate skills - you can find beginner content & you can find superstar elite content - but almost nothing in between. We look forward to seeing more!

      Thanks, that's my thinking as well, why only share the stuff I'm already pretty good at (Speedsurfing), maybe it's cool for people to see something I have just started and take them along for the journey, so glad you liked it :)

      Exactly. People tend to look to the pros for improvement, but the pros have ridiculous skills, muscles and equipment and have long forgotten the basic errors.

      Agreed! For an intermediate windsurfer it's often much more entertaining and/or interesting to watch other intermediates instead of the pros, who do everything (nearly) perfect. So keep the vids on wave-sessions coming!

      Trying to learn ws online if you are already in footstraps, doing 30kts+, gybing and waterstarting in any conditions ... is a very lonely place! I also agree that it will be more value if you show your wave progression as imperfect as it maybe might be at first 🙂

    Good on you Nils! I enjoyed the video mate! It's tricky on small waves because they move slow so you need to sometimes either hang in the top section of the wave until it gets steep enough and then do a sharp bottom turn to the lip or if its cross-off hang in the top half of the wave and then bear off when you see a section to get max speed to hit the lip. The more speed you have the easier it is to turn so you have to always think how you can maximise speed in the waves. The other strategy you can do in small waves is to plane at max speed from behind the swell and time it when it hits the bank so you go over the wave straight into a bottom turn however this can be tricky with timing.

    Nils .. the life of wave surfing - always windy on the outside, and much less wind in the impact zone. That why wave sailors have a lot of sail seizes - chosing the rigth seize for impact zone, and managing the outside is a skill to learn.

  • @henq
    @henq Před 9 měsíci

    I'm a beginner on waves myself, so these comments are from the couch:
    - you have your weight too much towards aft of the board, nose goes up in the air, the speed is gone
    - wave sailing is all about accelerating and decelerating in quick succesion. so put your mast and body forward to acceleratie into speedy turns
    - about going too fast for the wave: make your trajectory more parallel to the wave, not perpendicular. That way you can cross the wae full speed, if needed/wanted.
    Looking forward to your next vids !

    It wont be long and you'll be totally hooked on wave sailing!! Try not to be over critical and over-analyze everything you're doing. You have a lot of windsurfing expereince, all you need to do is to get out there and spend time on the water, it will come....
    With the jumping, try not to round up into the wind so much, although the condidtions weren't great for launching, I noticed every time you wnet for a jump you pulled the front hand in and round up into the wind, you want to stay off the wind more, keep the speed up, pull that back foot up under your butt.......
    Wave riding, well, I am no expert trust me, but I love it and really enjoy it, maybe you could have got more off the wind and "down the line" sharp bottom turn and back up the face....on those little waves the ride will be short, but I think they are great for learning on because they are less intimidating. Dont be afraid to really slash that board on the bottom to come back up the top and slash the lip......its so much fun!! Another couple of sessions and you'll be slaying those waves!!

    Loved the video. Hope to see more of this. In time you might even slow down on slalom and just chase waves 😁 There is a lot to learn in waves. It took me so long to find out the smaller things that make big improvements. I'm sure you'll get good quite quickly. Timing however it just time on the waves. Hope to share some sessions with you in Cape Town one day 😎

  • @moguzd
    @moguzd Před rokem

    Inspring video, its great you are sharing the experience.
    As Paul said, it sounds counter intuitive but it is easier to learn on big swell, because unlike small waves, you don't need to be at the critical section, you can stay at the shoulder safely and still have wave power, bigger area to move around and no problems if you make timing mistakes. Olso wave face is generally less choppy when its big.

    Thanks Nils for showing the all too common real life experience of poor conditions/ wind & wave combinations. Another one is where you sail in good wind but rough water for over an hour waiting for good waves then the tide height brings the best wave conditions but then the good wind drops to a major lull. Laugh and curse at the same time, so typical.

  • @rasmuszaurins7233
    @rasmuszaurins7233 Před rokem +4

    Hallo, Du hast das grundsätzliche Problem wenn "passive" Slalomwindsurfer auf Wavematerial umsteigen und diesen passiven Stil weiter behalten. Zuerst beim Rausfahren NICHT Unterhand greifen, die Gabel NICHT im weiten Griff halten, die Trapeztampen LÄNGER einstellen. Die vordere Hand KURZ VOR die Trapeztampen posltionieren und den grösseren Teil des Segelzugs mit dem getstreckten vorderen Arm halten, so beschleunigst Du schneller und kannst besser Pumpen um schnell genug im Weisswasserbereich zu beschleinigen für Sprünge mit kurzem Anlaufweg. Generell gilt beim Rausfahren: Pumpen, Pumpem, Pumpen und das Rigg aufrecht mit engen gestreckten Armen halten um genug Zug im Segel zu haben. 4,7 bei 25 Knoten ist NICHT überpowert, sondern bei deinem Gewicht sogar fast schon unterpowered, ja beim Wavewindsurfen muss man KRAFT aufwenden und darf/kann sich nicht durch die Gegend ziehen/cruisen lassen wie beim Slalom. Beim Springen hast Du die Segelpower gekillt weil Du den vorderen Arm angewinkelt hast direkt beim Absprung, richtig wäre: Arme lang, abspringen und DANN in der Luft die Arme winkeln, wie ein Pumpen, auf keinen Fall einen Klimmzug machen und den Körper zum Segel bewegen, sondern das Segel zum Körper ziehen. Wenn Du reinfährst hälst Du das Rigg besser, einfach mal mit dem Wavematerial rausgehen OHNE WELLE und das AKTIVE kraftvolle Segeln üben. Bribgt dich auch im Slalom auf ein neues Niveau.

    Hard place to learn as the waves are nearly non-existent and therefore only breaking close to shore. I expect that the wind is thermally generated, hence only wind locally and for a short time. This means that there is no fetch for them to build up to a reasonable head-height. If there is a steep drop-off in depth, you would need much bigger waves to move things farther out from the beach. Well done for giving it a ago.

    I remember this spot when was in Tarifa 25 years ago, as a difficult place because of the very gusty conditions at the shore while out on the sea it was really windy, even for my 4 meter sails. But we had a lot of fun nevertheless. I would like to go there once more...but driving 2400km keeps holding me back 🙂

  • @robemery11
    @robemery11 Před rokem +1

    This is an excellent video, your wave sailing has improved heaps since last year! There is a downwind current so you need to sail broader on the way out and pump, pick the best ramp and turn back on a reach as you go up the face, pull on the booms for some thrust but almost instantly unweight yourself and pull your feet under you bum to lift the windward rail to get the wind under the board. Most importantly, next winter... come to Western Australia, we wave-sail on the same tack and we have a heap of smooth speed sailing spots.
    edit... I remember my first big jump, I had been sailing in the river for a year and could gybe and was getting good speed. I launched off a chest high wave at good speed, I went so high I thought I was going to die and threw the rig away. Then I was hooked!

    way too much weight on the backfoot and too comitted to the harness on the wave.
    I'm not a good wave sailor myself but i think you'd want to stand on it like a normal surfboard (more over the centre). Bend your legs and carve with the toes of both feet
