David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He had a lot of great songs including "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Heroes" etc.

As a kid in the 70s with an active imagination, this song terrified me every time it came on the radio… I just imagined this poor man drifting in space forever. It honestly took me a long time to appreciate Bowie because I had such a visceral negative reaction to his voice for a long time. But I did come around to recognize his genius eventually. There’s a lot more Bowie to love! Changes, Rebel Rebel, Life on Mars, Young Americans, Under Pressure… so many incredible tracks from this totally unique legend.

Same. Exactly the same, with the Space Oddity fear. It was like a tragic story they turned into a song. "Run Joey Run" freaked me out, too. 😆😆😆😆 I was such a wuss.

It is hard to really grasp Bowie as an artist until you sample songs from across his long catalogue because every album sounds totally different - music hall, pop, glam, rock, soul, industrial, electronica... His "great run" in the 1970s changed music forever - yes, he shocked the world with his look and sound - but his greatest commercial success was in the 1980s. His last several albums in the 2000s, however, are just as strong. I can't think of another artist who started in the '60s who continued to make equally brilliant music at the end of their careers.

"Ziggy Stardust" was Bowie's world-changing new character. Unlike anything early-70's, he literally transformed into an Androgynous Alien on stage, posing as a human, enjoying it's seductive power, disturbing and a bit menacing. Totally other-worldly, Ziggy shocked conventional audiences, and created a massive cult following. At the brink of world-fame, Bowie unexpectedly announced (on stage), the end of Ziggy, and moved on. Check out amazing Live performances from "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars".

Was lucky enough to see him live in Memphis in the 70’s- with Cat Stevens opening. He was SO ahead of his time- and the look (this look) is part of the glam rock scene. His repertoire is so varied with each persona. You just have to keep exploring .

A tribute to the astronauts (and moon landing) in '69! Musicians did not make videos when this was made (since it didn't yet exist). The fact that he filmed this was another way Bowie was so far ahead of his time. Now you gotta do Cmdr Chris Hadfield's cover live from the ISS!

After 6 years of trying to become recognised, David wrote and released this in 1969, aged 22!
His style? His own style. No 2 songs are the same, no 2 looks are the same. David would reinvent himself to suit the times. From here up to 1973 he personified the alien character of Ziggy Stardust and released it's concept album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
    Try,
    Moonage Daydream
    Suffragette City.
BTW David also did mime, performed in theatres, played the saxophone...all prior to 1969. He worked right through to the end, releasing his last works in January 2016, just prior to his death at age 69😢. He's been one of my idols and I'm so glad I got to experience his concert, in 2004

Space exploration was very new, there was no music videos for another 10 years or so. The beginning is all the pr of NASA. Then it goes wrong and he floats away in space. Bowie absolutely blew us away , and he alway created a character to base his music around until later in life. He was hounded by the press and they treated him like a freak, that didn’t help his drug use. Epic piece of art ☮️

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. It's fascinating to see you fascinated with this. But I must tell you, this is just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. He did so many different kinds of things and had so many looks and personas. And it wasn't just in the 70s man he was absolutely huge in the 80s to a whole new audience but they were the really super hip people around the edges and yet his stuff still kept breaking through and charting on mainstream radio. He is so highly revered. He also collaborated with John Lennon from the Beatles in the seventies, that was a lot of fun.
For something more down to earth, pardon the pun, but still totally Bowie often his world, check out Queen bitch, and there are a couple of interesting live versions in front of I think television Studio audiences, but maybe one is an actual concert. But his Studio tracks are fantastic as well both to that, and some of his other early hits, like Rebel rebel, and, suffragette city, and then of course the spiders from Mars stuff is all fantastic with many huge hits, and that was also in this Ziggy Stardust phase which he looks like in this video.

David Bowie was an innovator in so many ways including music videos. You mostly can't go wrong, but when you get around to reacting to "Heroes" (one of the greatest songs ever written) please react to the studio recording or a live version. The "official music video", while very cool, uses the single edit which cuts out so much of what makes the song great-- the intense gorgeous buildup.
I really enjoyed this reaction! Enjoy the Bowie rabbit hole! It's deep! 😊

Getting close to that 50k subscribers!👍 David's last name is pronounced Bow-ee (as in bow and arrow). He was known as a glam rocker in the early 70's thus the clothing & makeup. He was a very versatile artist. When they compared him to the Bee Gees, I was kind of surprised, although the Bee Gees sound in the late 60's were different than the Disco era. Great reaction though. Goto dive deep into David's repertoire.🎃

Growing up in the 70s, you'd be exposed to stuff like this just in everyday life, if not the radio then maybe a -- for real -- jukebox or from someone's car. You were always hearing things that made you feel like you were experiencing something special. Like knowing about certain kinds of music or just certain songs would mean that you were a member of a club of some kind. And you were always looking for new clubs to join.........
You just don't hear too many people anymore trying to create something genuinely otherworldly, like this.

The Bee Gees had three stages of their music career. They started out as child prodigies in the late-1950s to the early-1960s in Australia. In 1967, the trio moved to the UK, and had a number of hit Pop Rock songs in the US and the UK in the late-1960s. In 1975, they started playing and recording Soul-inspired Disco music, which defined the public’s perception of the trio for the rest of their career.
The Bee Gees made a promotional film clip to promote their 1967 hit song, “I Started A Joke”. You might want to react to that “music video” at your most convenient time. You will also want to react to their 1967 hit song, “To Love Somebody”. There is a good TV performance of the song by The Bee Gees on the West German music program, “Beat Club”, available for viewing here on CZcams.

Not a song suggestion, but just popping in to say Bowie was super ahead of the times on a lot of things. He's the first artist that I'm aware of to successfully negotiate retaining all publishing rights to his own music into each of his contracts. In 1990 he successfully bought out his contract with a label and previous manager he wanted to get free of, for a lump sum cash offer that left him close to wiped out. He actually walked into a bank to take out a loan on the collateral of essentially "being David Bowie" in order to pay for it. Shortly after that he reissued his entire (now free and clear) song catalogue on a pair of expansive boxed sets called Sound+Vision through Rykodisc, along with a tour series which he said would be his last live performances of the old catalogue, and which earned him enough to compensate the previous buyout from the other label and pay off the loans. He also issued stock bonds (the majority of which were bought by Prudential Insurance Company) that paid out based on his future album sales.
In 1996 he even pioneered livestream simulcast, broadcasting a live show to theaters across the US, in an early live version of what Taylor Swift is doing with her concert film now. He did an exclusive online only song release for download, which was the first time that had been offered. That year he also introduced what is arguably the first music streaming service, though the technology was still developing... he created UltraStar, which turned into BowieNet, an online hosting service and internet provider. When people were still using dial-up with America Online discs, he was offering subscription internet access, which came with exclusive music (before spotify), fan boards (before reddit), and ticket purchasing (before stubhub) and a bowienet email address. His idea was that in a few years, streaming (which didn't exist yet, mp3 players weren't even around) would replace physical media for music sales.
He had a lot of collaboration / got into trouble with Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, etc. He had entire concept albums he never published or finished producing, and more than one legitimate stage show rock opera he worked on with people before deciding on different directions (knowing but not yet making public that he was terminally ill). It was really a "whatever excited him right now" kind of situation.

For early David Bowie songs, you should check out his 1970 song, “The Man Who Sold The World”, which was covered by Nirvana on their TV concert on “MTV Unplugged”. Another one is his 1972 song, “Suffragette City”. A third one from 1972 is his song “Starman”. He and his band do a great TV performance of the song on BBC’s “Top Of The Pops” music program.

It would be great to get a song or two from each album to get a sense of his arc. And for fun, as we approach the holidays, listen to his duet of The Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby. (Do you even know who Bing is!? 😂)

    You can't describe Bowie ... David was/is art! :) ♥
He was an epic actor, too! He was the "The Goblin KIng" in the movie "The Labyrinth" < and yes, he did performed there, too.
Queen (< you remember? Freddie Mercury, etc.) did a track with Bowie, too. It's called "Under Pressure". You might heard at least the riff of this track, as it got famous again when "Vanilla Ice" made his "Ice Ice Baby" song with a sample of it. As he didn't asked in advanced, so he got sued for it! *arg

It may be a bit harder for newer audiences to understand why Bowie is such a famous artist but it takes some homework or jumping in the David Bowie rabbit hole, very unique artist. There's a movie that came out recently that shows a bit about him before he became a superstar.
This song, is an epic one, has been used in movies, shows, everything and has been covered by many artists as well.

Glam Rock was a definite style in the 70s with Alice Cooper, and others it was a style many artist incorporated.

Bowie was a pioneer of the glam rock genre of the early 1970s. Bowie was famous for constantly reinventing himself, pioneering new forms of music and his fashion sense, particularly from the early 70s to mid-80s. His most well-known album is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (Please react to ‘Moonage Daydream’ from that album). Oh, by the way, his name is pronounced BOW-E, not BOO-E. Great reaction. Please do more Bowie, one of my all time favorite artists.

I'd forgotten just how spiritual & uplifting this is. He describes a man completely overcome by feelings of awe & wonder at the beauty of the universe. He surely must have seen the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' with it's absolutely breathtaking opening. He was certainly a unique musical phenomenon.

He didnt had a green eye, one of his eyes was discolourated and permanently dilated due to a childhood accident. Itbgives the ilusion it is of a different colour but no, he was born with normal monochomatic blue eyes.

Deep dive into the exotic world of David Bowie! Dozens of a variety of tunes to go including the tune Fame, Heroes, Let’s Dance, and Under Pressure which he sings with Freddie Mercury and Queen! Gus Dudgeon produced several early albums by Elton John including Elton’s self titled Elton John album. Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across The Water albums of Elton’s! Compare this tune of David’s to The Brother Gibbs song 1941 NY Coalmining Disaster.Have you listened to songs from The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album?
