Watch all NEW Selkirk LUXX Control Air Invikta pickleball paddle review by The Pickleball Pirate Keith Valentine!
Hey everyone, I finally got a chance to play the new Control Air from Selkirk. I think you're going to want to hear about it. Stay tuned!
So first off, let's talk about the Project Labs. Okay, so Labs program-you pay a lot of money, but you give feedback, and they give rebate cards. So, you spend $333, and they give you like a $70 rebate card for giving feedback. Then, you get a $40 rebate card for using one of our codes. What they do with this Labs program is they take the feedback from the people that pay that extra money, and they create a consumer version paddle. So, this is the consumer version paddle for the Labs Project 3.
So, let's talk about some of the improvements that were made, and then I'll talk about how the paddles play. A couple knocks that were on the original: the original had a knock of it's too soft, so you're not able to generate enough power with it, and it had a short handle. So, that was a couple things that were knocks against this paddle. You had to add a lot of lead tape to make this paddle a little bit more poppy. So, it was like 7.8 to 8.11 ounces.
Let's talk about the improvements they've made on this, and then I'll get into the technology and the specs of this. First off, they made the handle a little bit longer, so this is a 5.3-inch handle. And you can see here, as we look at the original versus this guy, you can see that we've got a little bit more length to deal with there on the handle. And then the power, so what they've done is they've increased the frame on this. They've got this 360° molding, which they call it, and they've stiffened the edges and they've put foam around the edges. So, very much like the Project 02, they put foam all the way around the edges of this guy to give it a little bit more head mass. So, when you feel this paddle, it's a little bit more head-heavy, so it does have power. Now, this is not a power paddle; this is still a control paddle, but this is one that they've given a little bit more pop to because that was the biggest knock on the Project 03.
When we look at this, we talk about just the normal specs. Obviously, it's 7.8 to 8.10 ounces, it is a 4 and 1/4 inch grip circumference, 5.35-inch grip, which I just showed you here, the handle length, obviously, the normal 16.45, and 7.5 inches across. Now, what they've done a little bit different is they talk about the 20 mm core. So, this is still a 20 mm core paddle. It's got this what they call a fuic carbon fiber face. So, you can see the microscopic pictures here. This does look different than any of the other paddles that we've done, but you can still tell that it has the specs and the grit paint that they used on the Project 03, which makes this an extremely spinny paddle. So, this is not top tier; this is not 2300 RPMs in spin. This is probably around the 1800 to 2000 Mark in the spin. So, it's still a top-tier spinning paddle, but it is a control paddle.
So, I really found that kitchen resets, third shot drops, no problem. Then the other thing that I liked about this is just enough pop that with the spin, you can put a little bit of pressure from the baseline. So, the other thing about the Project 03, it was almost pointless to drive from the baseline. I couldn't do anything with it; it wasn't even a good setup shot because it was coming so soft. This one has enough power that it's a threat from the baseline, especially for those that like to hit topspin. This thing dips really well; it is a very good spinning paddle.
These paddles retail for $250. With our pirate code below, you will get a $30 rebate card back from Selkirk just to say thanks for buying the paddle. And for those of you that are using our code, thank you so much for helping us keep the lights on. How much lead tape do you recommend adding to this?

Really depends on your strength and how much hand sapped you want to sacrifice at the net. Always trade offs there, more weight means more shoulder and elbow strain.
