- London's Firefighters risk their lives every day and the clothes they wear are crucial in making sure they stay safe. So it's hard to believe that it was just a couple of generations ago that they were wearing basic items. London firefighters are now being issued with an upgraded uniform. The cost for each is less than 500 pounds. Emma North can tell us about the changes.
I'm so surprised to see the helmet wasn't equipped with a light on it until now
Some of the other fire services in England are still use such helmet's.
they could add torches as the old helmets had mounts but the brigade decided not to purchase them.
They have them but they weren’t permanently attached
My dad station in Cambridgeshire England has had lights in the side of the helmet for ages
My dad joined the Lothian & Borders fire brigade in 1975 he had the wool tunic and yellow leggings but he had a black helmet before the switch to yellow
Stop closing the stations and employ more crews.
Even the old tunics where designed with some level of practicality in mind, the rubber leggings would have been useful around large volumes of water and the bright colours make you stand out. However the newest ppe is leaps and bounds ahead of what they had 30 years ago.
I thought wool was fire retardant
@@oscarosullivan4513 it is, wool doesn’t burn easily. If your out fighting a Bushfire they recommend wearing something made out of wool or something that’s not synthetic fibers as the plastic in them will melt and stick to your skin.
@@Adelaide_Transit Thanks its mad that the proto BA and wheeled escapes lasted so long
Looks like the trial uniform in London’s Burning series 9 episode 14
It lools a bit like it but yes good uniforms
Ya, no more being the only “Shinies” in the Brigade for the Blackwall Blue Watch crews
When the first yellow leggings were issued the actually caught fire very easily . Ask me how I know .
21st Century British Firefighting.
I loved the old blue uniform.
The Nomex fire coats were bulky and didn’t provide thermal protection
@@adambednarek2007
Nonsense.Protective apparel made with Nomex® fabrics balances breathability in everyday use with excellent thermal protection under fire or electric arc exposures.
The current kit is made using Nomex.
@@adambednarek2007that told you
Umm. if the LFB just made a visit to Munchen Fire Department 30 years ago, they would could have adopted the same gear their wearing in 2020...!
In portugal firefighters do paramedics work ambulances and everything and they are not paramedics basic training and training to do pcr and no equipment to be honest only a polo and trousers
She can't save someone with those nails! XD
True Stupid !
Why dont they have their names on back of tunics? like in USA. Just curious
Idk actually same with Ireland
Because it may be too expensive to do that and the tunic might be re issued if it is in nearly mint condition.
Doubt they would give a new fire fighter second hand PPE
@@oscarosullivan4513 With 4 watches, sickness, and holidays, it is not as simple as it sounds. The need for replacement uniforms that get soaked and filthy after a single incident makes matters even more complex.
Uniform items constantly circulate, but are always fresh from the cleaners. Boots are the only real exception.
Underwear items are also personal and the firefighters responsibility.
@@oscarosullivan4513 when your gear get's dirty, it get's sent away for cleaning and you just sign out a new pair. So pretty much everyone's using gear that dozens of other hand worn.
Wow in 1987 in South Australia we had better fire fighting gear than the UK. Wow!!
Mav F No you didn't. You're exaggerating for the sake of it, aren't you?
@@heli-crewhgs5285 you're not wrong, if anything it was worse than the london fire brigade in the 80s, in south australia the fire fighters only had a coat and boots along with the helmet for call outs the trousers were only normal work trousers for everyday use.
Or the Republic of Ireland
@@denzz8687 I was a volunteer but we had rubber boots and at least we didn't have plastic trousers like the UK, but overalls that were fire resistant upto 5 washes. However, I went out in 1990s and bought my own firefighting clothes and boots and helmet, even before firefighting gear was a real thing. I got told off at fire scenes for not wearing proper uniform. Today that uniform but with some improvements are worn. I kind of miss the duck bill helmet. lol
@@Mav_F I thought the trousers were rubber. If you look at the old british pathe films of fire firefighters and up until the the mid 70’s they wore two piece black rubber leggings and wool trousers
Someone can give me subtitles please ?
Click cc on the video
Imagine watching this video and instead of thinking about the new equipment and how evolved our protection for our emergency responders has become, just raging about the fact they showed a woman.

Maybe learn from the navy firecrews on board carriers or F1 pit crews firecrew who wear high grade fire retarding clothing and equipment... Maybe have flir lidar and infra red goggles too
@@colonelgeorgiospapadopoulos Agreed or that for a long time was the best protection. Introduced in 1914 and retired 1989 with only minor changes in the 70’s

I find it strange
Because they had to have a woman .... eny woman
Great Fires of London.
Fireman Sam.
I’d rather the fire coat with the cork helmet
Eh idk the kingcross rethink uniform is fire proof but to a certain degree but the old helmats arnet any good because of the fire behind your neck
The plastic leggings and the rubber gloves were the real issue in a woollen tunic era and also into the early nineties. If you went in there, you were certainly gonna lose them, because these tended to soften up and melt.
@@mehistaimsaar1323 Isn’t wool supposed to have fire retardent properties
@@oscarosullivan4513 it has for a limited amount of time, but it soaks in water like sponge.
@@mehistaimsaar1323 Thanks
It won't be long before we see pink fire uniforms next
they did have a pinky purple uniform 8 years ago
Unlikely
They have to make white uniforms because it protects them from brigte lights
@@Charlzey1998 It was more maroon
We've got a pink fire engine in Liverpool (promotes a breast cancer charity). You got a problem with that?
Rather the black turnout gear
You would like Lion redzone for blocking cancer particulates
The new one looks nicer. It looks more safer
More translucent if a firefighter is lost you would probs find them faster and extract them quicker
Shows dirt easier
glad you can afford it, this country's sick.
Am unfortunately born here. Stupid government. Filled up my head.

I wanted to do a public services course but I was told it was hard to be employed as a white male, they said they would rather employ females or ethnic minoritys even if you were more equipped for the job.
Nonsense
@@holahovito11 yes I was very sad, picked a different course because of it
Felix Walker One of my friend who is a Firefighter in London were forced to accept in their Brigade unfit womens despite them failing the tests because diversity, so what they did, they ignored them and avoided them, weeks later they were transferred to another Brigade after complaining why the Mens aren’t inclusive enough. He told me they rely on each other to save each other and as Mens, relying on a female who have failed entry tests, unfit to fight any fire and risks, they can’t let them in.
That's unacceptable
Don't believe the lies, yes brigades are trying to increase minority group numbers with each recruitment campaign. But NO-ONE is changing the standards, candidates either make the grade or do not it's that simple.
Built in period pants and 12 extra days off a year?? ;-)
London is meant to be good I gess NOT
its insane, my dad is a fire fighter in Lancashire and they had the new helmets 10 years ago. also, even tho London has so many more tower blocks where you need a long lasting BA (breathing apparatus) London only has about 30 mins where Lancashire you get a good 50 mins out of the BA sets if you stay calm. Its insane to think about it as well when you hear stories from firefighters in Grenfel (pardon my pour spelling) saying they put off using their BA while in the building until they absolutely had too because they had so little air. Its madness!
This will come down too budget and that the brigade will use the gear and equipment to its full advantage (basically right up until it’s operational life has ended)
Heard about the cylinder capacity
Of course they had to use a woman.
hehe xd
AWResistance Because of diversity, by now showing a White Men as a trump card, they send a message that any Men will be fought because diversity means more weemenz.
Yeah, ignore the two men they had standing alongside the woman. "Hands up who wants to be in a CZcams video?" and it's literally a 50/50 chance of being a woman vs a man. Pillock.
@@jackllewellyn746 Gobshite is what the Op is
Such a shame about the brown colour. Looks naff and shows the dirt. The UK has always made a satorial mess of uniforms: France, the USA and Italy all produce practical kit that also looks good.
It is to show up dirt from the fire
Having the uniforms show dirt and debris from fires is best, firefighters are more at risk of developing illness from being exposed to it, so if the dirt is more visible, you clean it to reduce chances of that.
