If everything went to their plan, they could have responded with criticism of Israel’s participation by being like “Look, we let a Palestinian perform! (As long as he doesn’t mention Palestine, or being Palestinian, or tries to represent his culture in any way)”. But Eric called their bluff and refused to be complicit. He showed he is Palestinian, and you will look at at him. And that was enough to make the EBU uncomfortable.

The no politics rule is just a PR reason. They are still a tv show at the end of the day, they get money through the participating tv stations. The more tv stations participate, the better. Thats why they werent going to exclude Russia until several other tv stations threatened to pull out if they didint. With not enough material repercussions against the participation of Israels station and their main sponsor being Israeli, they benefitted more from keeping them in. Although keeping them in *is* of course a political move since it says that they dont consider what they did bad enough to warrant an exclusion. I guess banning the symbols of the culture of palestinians that were further removed from the state would have been too much, made them too open to criticism of racism.
