  • China’s determination to assert its disputed sovereignty over the entirety of the vast South China Sea has sparked increasing clashes with its neighbors in recent years, particularly the Philippines. CNN's Ivan Watson joined the Philippine Coast Guard for two days, the first time foreign journalists have been allowed to embed with the fleet in decades. #China #Philippines #SouthChinaSea #CNN #News

To be honest, It's somewhat hard to believe that they're just trying to claim it solely due to flexing territorial "ownership" based on historical facts or whatnot. But the fact that over the years they're able to quickly build various military installations means there is an ulterior motive to their actions. Could be that for the most part, they're slowly trying to expand their military grasp in both sea and land just like the US has almost a global reach in terms of moving their military around via forward bases on foreign territory. So yeah, it both to boost their Economy further tby control the sea lanes and in turn being able to expand their military control.
Guess their territorial tug-of-war with India isn't going smoothly so they're out trying different options. At least that's how it looks like based on how long this territorial dispute is going for the past decade or so. Hopefully it doesn't escalate to an armed conflict like in Ukraine or in the Middle East. A war breaking out within the area of important shipping lanes would cripple logistics and eventually severely impact supply chains.

People should realize that Philippine uses deadly force on others. It’s the Philippine Coast Guard that had shot to death a Taiwanese fisherman in 2013 in the near Taiping Island which is an island administered by Taiwan. Also, Philippines also stole Taiwan’s Zhongye Dao/Thitu Island during a storm. China has not shoot to death anyone over the incidents between China and Philippines. Also, two Vietnamese fishermen died in 2017 in a tragic incident with the Philippine Navy. So, Philippine is the one that's been provoking others--especially China recently. The actions by China are those of enforcing sovereignty over the islands, shoals, reefs, etc., because Philippines keeps trying to take them. China’s enforcement procedures are not aggressive or bullying.
Philippines is really the one that uses aggressive/bullying, hostile and deadly forces against other countries’ fishermen (Taiwan, Vietnam, China) especially back in the 60’s and 70’s, during and after they seized the islands and shoals from ROC/Taiwan. They shoot to kill, did onboard searches, arrested fishermen, seized fishermen’s boats and rammed their boats. However, China has not caused any fatality over the incidents between China and Philippines.
The Philippines, during the 60’s and 70’s, have forcefully seized and occupied 11 islands, shoals, reefs, etc., which included Zhongye Dao. These were originally under ROC/Taiwan’s administration. They were seized by Philippines from ROC/Taiwan when it was too weak to defend from Philippines and pressure from the US.
China only uses blocking, which is less aggressive and less invasive than the methods used by coast guards of Philippines and around the world.

Providing a comprehensive perspective and an accurate evaluation of the situation is essential. It's important to understand that no country or nation on Earth has exclusive ownership of an entire sea or ocean, except within their jurisdictional nautical distances from the coastline and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) as provided by the UNCLOS. Remember, China willingly committed to adhere to this principle when it signed voluntarily the UNCLOS on December 10, 1982. The term "South China Sea" doesn't signify ownership by China, just as the Gulf of Mexico isn't owned by Mexico, the Sea of Japan isn't owned by Japan, and the Indian Ocean isn't owned by India. These are directional references on maps for navigation and travel purposes.
Justifying historical claims over entire seas, oceans or other territories at present is not only threatening and dangerous but also lacks both logical and legal basis in the existing context of established current international relations or situations. Additionally, validating past territorial claims may prompt other nations to assert similar claims over presently occupied territories that are protected by existing international laws, potentially jeopardizing global peace.
For instance, Turkey would claim territories like Bulgaria, Armenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Lebanon, Jordan…etc. based on historic claims under the Ottoman Empire. And Mongolia could also claim all of China from the historic Mongolian Empire under Kublai Khan. Furthermore, there could be conflicting territorial claims depending on the historical period when such claims are acknowledged-whether during the Medieval period, Renaissance, Early Modern Period, or potentially extending back to the Paleolithic Period. This is why recognizing such historical claims today poses risks within the framework of present international laws, conditions and circumstances.
Just to emphasize, one of the significant factors leading to the Ukraine war stems from Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement in February 2022 that Ukraine lacks historical grounds for independent statehood, as he claimed modern Ukraine was entirely shaped by Russia. An obvious historical claim by Putin which lacks solid factual basis in historical reality.
Moreover, granting China or any country the authority to claim almost an entire sea runs counter to established laws like those articulated in the UNCLOS, to which China voluntarily allowed itself to be bound by its principles when it ratified the UNCLOS effectively on June 07, 1996. This reality exposes China’s reputation and character regarding adherence to international laws that governs relations among nations.
It’s no surprise why China stands alone in its claim, with no global support whatsoever for its assertion over the South China Sea. No country supports China not even from its own strategic partners like Russia, Pakistan or North Korea. These countries may have also surmised about the principle that no single nation could truly claim exclusive ownership of a vast sea or ocean. And this clear zero support for China remains consistent, even if China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, emphasized that freedom of navigation will be respected even if China asserts sovereignty over the South China Sea.
The ongoing patriotic defense by the Philippines to safeguard its EEZ in the West Philippine Sea should genuinely be a global concern. Permitting China's expansive claims could set a precedent for other nations to follow, endangering established maritime practices, decrees, and protocols worldwide. In the words of the Philippine Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, China is transforming the entire South China Sea into its own Lake. This fact alone is truly alarming.

To clarify, the Philippines' claim on Spratlys (aside from a few natural islands) are not territorial, but simply in context of an EEZ. An EEZ is not territorial water, but enforcement of international laws is within the obligation of the nation or nations controlling an EEZ. If two nations have overlapping EEZ's, then it is their obligation to talk in relation to sharing of resources within the shared EEZ. China, in this regard, is regarded by UNCLOS as an outsider in any such talks regarding Spratly's. The only ones who can are the Philippines, Malaysia, etc, who shares the overlapping EEZ. In regards to Scarborough shoal which is not part of Spratlys, the claims of China (and by extension, Taiwan) was also effectively rejected by the same court ruling. The Philippines is the sole legal claimant of the said shoal, and anyone else is basically an illegal settler.
Also, speaking of natural islands, China doesn't even control ANY natural island in the Spratly group of islands. Even Taiwan is ahead of them in terms of controlling a natural island so they are relegated into destroying coral reefs to have some semblance of a claim. And that's the contentious part since reefs cannot be considered as territory, but falls under an EEZ and extended continental shelf which can only be exploited by the nations surrounding it.
Taiwan controls the largest island, Vietnam controls 9 large islands, the Philippines controls 7 islands, and Malaysia controls 1. China's claims is basically flimsy. If the Philippines is as aggressive as China, then we can easily militarize any one of those islands. But we're a peace loving country

Don't be ridiculous. When it comes to sovereignty there is no compromise. The filipinos have been trying to steal Chinese territories in the South China Sea from 1945. They stole the Thitu island from the taiwanese when they were sleeping. No more.

People should realize: Philippine uses deadly force on others. It’s the Philippine Coast Guard that had shot to death a Taiwanese fisherman in 2013 near Taiping Island which is an island administered by Taiwan. Also, Philippines also stole Taiwan’s Zhongye Dao/Thitu Island during a storm. China has not cause any death over cases between China and Philippines. Also, 2 Vietnamese fishermen died in 2017 in a tragic incident with Philippine Navy. So, Philippine is the one that's been provoking others. Philippine is the aggressive, hostile bully in disguise.

I'm assuming there are potential US vessels in the area that could assist. I'm no Maritime expert, but belligerently putting yourself in front of another vessel to impede it's trajectory, wouldn't this be considered a threatening posture? How much of a threat deems it warranted to send out a distress call, also pending frequencies aren't being jammed?
