    I've been looking at the T&D pinion depth tool, but it didn't look like it was all that much more difficult to set up this much cheaper version. Now I'm torn if the extra cost is going to really be worth it for the few axles I do. Thanks for the demo.

      This tool seems to work ok, and for the 3 or 4 ring and pinions I do a year it is ok for the money.

    I like your video. I got the same set up tool last week I want to know how you got the dial indicator to sat on that bracket in the housing did you drill a hole and put a screw in it. let me know so i can do the same thing. thank you waiting for your reply

      Thanks for the comment. What I used is a small c clamp that you could not see in the view facing the dial indicator. Hope that helps.

    How do you calibrate The pressure on the carrier bearings with shim's

      Hi you really can't measure the preload on the side bearings other than by how hard it is to install the side shims, If they just slip in it is to loose and if you really have to pound them in they are to tight. with both of the bearing caps off the carrier it should not just pull out of the axle housing.       yeah it is kind of going by feel, and that is why I said the part about lifting the carrier out of the axle housing. when it is about right on side bearing pre load you will need to use a pry bar to remove the carrier. What you can do is install the carrier with no ring gear on it and shim the side bearings and spin the carrier and feel the drag on the bearings, when you spin it the carrier should rotate about one turn and stop that will be really close. Then you will feel how tight the shims are on the side bearings when you try to remove them. I hope this helps you out, any more questions just send me a message. Thanks@@user-gq2nm2fd5u

    Hi Randy. Fantastic video, but you lost me in one place: At 5:03 you call out 1.527". But the way I'm reading the dial gauge, I'm reading 1.572", a difference of over 0.050". What am I missing here? Thanks!

      Hi DAN what you need to do is count back from 0, because the dial indicator was set at 0 with the setting tool. I hope this clears it up for you. Thanks

    So I’m changing my gears from a 3.55 to 3.73 on a 2006 ford mustang GT 8.8 differential ,I’m stuck on my pinion part I put 0.030inchs shim on the pinion gear but my old pinion shim was a 0.023 but after installing the 0.030 shim on my pinion gear and getting the pre load at 28 inch lbs rotating force, my pinion gear is getting stuck on the LSD Carrier……… bearings are new, could my problem be that I use to much shims for my pinion gear that why it touches the carrier??

      the pinion rubbing on the carrier may be caused by the shim, some times they will be really close.I always start with the stock shim thickness on the pinion and make adjustments from that point. Also make sure the rear pinion bearing is pressed on all the way, and the race that goes in the housing is fully seated. did you check the pinion depth before you put the carrier in?

      @@Randysshop49548 I couldn’t check the pattern before because the top of the pinion was touching the carrier but the carrier shims that backlash sound really nice, not to little or to much but then trying to turn the pinion I noticed the flat top side of the pinion touching the carrier

      @@Randysshop49548 but no I don’t have pinion depth tool, and yes I know I should’ve took it to a professional but I carefully study about it and beside I wanted the experience for later on down the road it’s just the pinion shim I get confused on

      I under stand. jegs sells a depth tool kit you can buy not real expensive and the instructions will show how to do it. save yourself some $$ and learn at the same time.@@Gammaepsilon2002

      A update I got my pinion depth good, check the pattern and it was good pattern in the middle with a 0.021 pinion shim and carrier shims left was 0.261 and right was 0.273 but I’m so happy, three months and I completed it

    Seems a lot of sodding around just to make the back wheels go round. I bet the factory made cars don't go to all that bother for Joe Public to drive around in. Regards from Australia.

      Hi Dave I am sure that the factory has way better fixtures for doing this but the same measurements are done so the rear end does not make noise. cheers
