Curtis Branker It's horrible but I loved every second of it. I love Jennifer Beals in it. All the 80s cheese. Kind of a cult classic like The Last Dragon. Both terrible movies by every stretch of the imagination made enjoyable by hilariously bad acting, pretty girls, 80s haircuts, and iconic 80s outfits/soundtracks
Truly iconic and ground “breaking” scene that introduced breaking to the world. I saw this movie when it first came out in theaters when I was a lad and it still is the most memorable moments in my lifetime .
Sorry but i dont like Breaking today even its cool and its progressed it lost this viber to me. Also 1000 headspins and flares cant replace Crazy legs and his footwork which is a work of art!!!! His footwork is OMG!!!! I know theres guys that have more moves in footwork but they dont look like him.
I’m 38 and I remember my cousins who are the older generation were super into this. Man that’s dope! I always appreciated this generation. They did it right. My cousin actually grew up to be a DJ at an 80s hip hop bar in San Francisco called Double Dutch. There were boom boxes and pictures of that 80s hip hop culture and graffiti all over the bar. RIP DJ Pete Nice
I have one of those massive boom boxes. It was my dad's. He liked his 'puttering at his workbench' tunes full-bodied and he got that from his boom box. Cassette and AM/FM. If they were out of town he'd bring it in the house and blast it to let burglers think someone was home. Selling it in our moving sale. Do you think anyone will buy it? It's dusty but otherwise fine. I got rid of all my old cassettes. Forgot I had something to play them on.
I am 50 years old and when I saw this in the movies, I knew then that Hip Hop culture and rap was here to stay. The most important moment for Hip Hop. Flash dance was a big movie at that time, and to have a Hip Hop moment be part of this movie was huge! I believe this came out before any of the breakdancing movies such as beatstreet and breaking. So this was big to see breakdancing on the big screen.
I like the way it was filmed. As if it happened organically and developed as more dancers (WOW, btw) and audience gathered. You know, naturally, not like in the movies where every movement is choreographed for camera angles and lighting. Just one camera angle, perched like a fly on the wall, to see a street scene unfold into masterful artistry. Sublime.
right after this movie my friends and I got our 12ft roll of linoleum and was practicing our moves in the park. this movie changed my life ,... for the better !!! Thank You Rock Steady Crew !!
To me, this is what hip hop is all about. Look at everyone old and young who is just smiling and having fun. I wish I could relive those days again. Unfortunately, it will never be the same again. I miss Hip Hop !!!!!
Yes. I remember seeing this and Boy where does the time go. No Internet, Cell Phones, DVD's or Blu Rays. Apple & Microsoft were still wet behind the ears and the Little Baby is now all grown up. This was next to Queer As Folk (US) that was filmed in Toronto, Ontario one of the best movies about life in Pittsburgh.
That was an iconic scene. I remember seeing that in Japan while going to school grade school and thought "wow.. I wanna do that' and eventually self taught it.
I am 51 now and got to say..I used to sneak out from school in Cuba,my Dad though I was learning something,I was break dancing!!..I even did the 'Fall on my Back'thing..yeah it hurt..but I got a few hot chicks out of it..they thought that "Only Americans could do that".
Reminds of growing up in the 80s, I must have only been 6 or 7 practicing my break dance moves. Matter of fact to this day my medical file still has record describing how I obtained a sprained neck from trying to do head spins in the living room on cardboard. Ah the good old days before tiktok and internet. 😂😂😂
Jennifer Catalano yeah they were called THE ROCK STEADY GROUP. back then the club was called ROXY ON lower Manhattan all the best breakers were there. THEY EVEN MADE BEATSTREET THERE. CHECK THAT MOVIE OUT JENNIFER
That's KOOL Hector. I wish I had the connection & memories that you have with these guys. My only connection to them is from the movie BEAT STREET. They filmed a few scenes in my old neighborhood (Ridgewood, Queens--right next to Bushwick, Brooklyn). One of the scenes is in the beginning of the movie when they were taking a picture of Ramo's latest tag on the subway. It was filmed on FRESH POND ROAD between 67th & PUTNAM AVENUE(S).--(M TRAIN) I was 14 at the time. My parents still live there. It's not much of a connection, but it's my only one, and I love telling it to people. Maybe one day you can share a few stories about them.
Two great scenes from Flashdance. The music is Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun; followed by an instrumental version of "Avec la garde montante" from Bizet's opera Carmen.
Im an old school breaker Hip Hop guy. I grew up in Portalnd Oregon shout out to the Portland city BREAKERS !!!! I would go to small break dance comps in Lake Oswego or Gresham and win all the time although i wasnt good enough to be on the PCB. Iwon a contest from ripping or bitting Crazy Legs moves here. I did footwork into a windwill a backspin then the bridge and people went nuts!!!! I got it from Crazy legs scene which is the guy in the outfit. Hes the best cause you know its him and Breaking isnt about all the gymnastics its turned into. THIS WAS REAL BREAKING!!!! Crazy legs footwork is ART FINE ART YOU CANT COPY IT!!!!!! Gtho with guys doing 10000s of headspins thats cool but this THIS IS THE ART!!!! Also Jimmy Castor was the MAN!!!!
Wait a minute....How did Crazy legs body double for Jennifer? from Wiki - The dimly lit cinematography and montage-style editing are due in part to the fact that most of Jennifer Beals' dancing in the film was performed by a body double.[14] Her main dance double is the French actress Marine Jahan, while the breakdancing that Alex performs in the audition sequence at the end of the film was doubled by the male dancer Crazy Legs. The shot of Alex diving through the air in slow motion during the audition sequence was performed by Sharon Shapiro, who was a professional gymnast.
Who are the guys that does the Umbrella and first backspin? I found the answer. Mr. freeze and another video list the first backspin as Ken Swift. I noted that it does look like Ken Swift.
one of the most electric & sensational scenes in all of cinematic history, and one happens to find it in such a stupid, schmaltzy movie. the idea being that this kind of self-expression (dance) isn’t reserved for the sort of women the movie’s about; it’s not intrinsically erotic or tawdry or whatever, and you can find it on the streets of Pittsburgh as readily as anywhere. good scene
I remember in nyc you’d have these street performers and people would stop to watch and the nypd would beg people not to stop and watch and tell people the problem was one, blocking the sidewalk and two pick pockets!
I was in an Uber with a fellow 50+ as driver and Gap Band Party came on his radio and i asked if he remembered the video for Party Train "of course..with the breakin in the ring" . So I said " but we both know what movie was the intro" "of course Flashdance".
The first 1:16 sec of this clip in the movie🎥 Flashdance 💃in the 1980's, was a major influence in spreading the Breakdancing & Hip-Hop Cultural craze around the World! Been asking for the actual filming location that this scene took place for years. I’ve Been all around downtown Pittsburgh scouting several times and I don’t believe it was filmed there. I'm 56, it's a truly iconic scene of hip hop culture in 1984.
The use of the '70's Jimmy Castor Bunch's 'It's Just Begun' really made this scene, (RIP, Jimmy Castor')
So glad they didn’t “Hollyweird” this scene with corny music. Those b-boys must have had input on the music to use for this scene… 🎶
I’m 54 and when I watched this in the movie theater, it changed me for a hot minute. Still a groundbreaking scene for hip hop culture.
best scene in the movie.

Very Important Moment For Hip Hop. Peace Rocksteady Crew.
I remember I watched the movie three times just to see that scene. This really put breakdancing on the map!
80s must back !!!!!!!!
The best part of the movie. Little Norman “Normski” Scott was amazing for how young he was at that time.
Yep. I always thought his part was the best in this clip.
Rare Excerpt from Flashdance "dance" scene you may like if you haven't seen it already....

I agree. His part is my fav. I'd love to see his whole routine to his dance.

Rock Steady was the Shizzzzzz back then!
Grew up outside NYC.
That scene was a HUGE influence on us!

Bedford Park !
I was born on September 1980, i know what you mean! 👍👍👍
This generation sucks bro
I always thought that Normski's intro on the scene was the best part (first 9 seconds). Looks like he couldn't have been more than 12 on here.
This kid was dancing to the beat and killed it
It was definitely iLL. That big hat (b-boy style), his moves, how they had him blurry at first, then brought him into focus. Legendary scene!
This was really the introduction of breakdancing to mainstream America
Frosty freezes style is unmatched. He is the most important Bboy as far as everything. If it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Why do you consider him “most important”?
Miss the 80s
I do not miss the fashions and hairstyles. That's one look I dread coming back around.

Great use of a long lens (narrow plane of focus). And it's one camera position. filmmaking!
I noticed that. The focus was on the ladies at first, the. The b-boys! The bokeh was on point!
great scene, but they should have been given more screen time. wish i could go back in time.
Internet took out the best scene fucking haters
But it left people wanting more!
Second best scene in the movie!

I remember on early 80's video, this scene used the song song, but arranged differently. I wonder what the story behind that is.
