Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (translating to Land of My Fathers) was composed by father and son Evan James and James James in 1856. The original title was Glan Rhondda, meaning Banks of the Rhondda if I remember correctly. It reached national acclaim in 1858 when it was performed at the Llangollen Eisteddfod (which is a festival held every year to celebrate Welsh culture, food, crafts, language, arts and more!) I think it was created when the writer's brother asked him to join him in America to start a new life and he pretty much didn't want I don't think, he must of loved his country too much! While Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is sung at national events and sporting occasions and universally recognised as Wales’ national anthem, it isn’t actually legally or officially known as such - which is the case for the majority of anthems in the British isles. It has also been called the extra man I believe, blamed for making other countries loose against us in sports events such as Rugby as it unites the crowd and allegedly brakes the focus of the other teams. Last little fact is, is that song is one of the first known recordings of the Welsh Language.
Now for the translation bit. The full anthem is quite a bit longer than this, this is the one that is sung at sporting events.
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
    Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
    Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
    CHORUS:
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
    O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.
These are the lyrics in Welsh and now for the English translation:
This land of my fathers is dear to me,
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature,
    Her brave warriors, fine patriots,
    Shed their blood for freedom.
    CHORUS:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land.
May the old language endure forever.
Hopefully this gives you some background into our culture. Sorry for the mass amounts of words but hopefully this is a little informative! Da iawn on the video!

The Welsh National Anthem was the FIRST EVER to be sung before a sporting event. In 1905 the Welsh national rugby team hosted New Zealand's first touring team, who started every match performing a Haka. As a response, Wales player Teddy Morgan led the crowd singing the anthem "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" (The Land Of My Fathers). There was no precedent for an anthem to be sung before this time - WALES started that tradition !

Wales played like fire-breathing dragons against the old enemy, the stirring anthem stoked things up. .We love to sing in Wales. The South Wales valleys have been renowned for male voice choirs, miners would sing after long graft at the pit, soldiers would sing with fire and passion when facing attack by thousands, the sheep baa in tuneful harmony, and my dog Bryn would throw back his head and we would sing our hearts out together. I wasn't in the stadium that day but I was in Cardiff and the entire city was buzzing. The only other time in my living memory that compared to this was in 2005 when we played Ireland for the grand slam

At ice hockey games in the UK, teams have “match night mascot”, it’s mainly a child from one of their Jr teams (most U10) but sometimes a child who just knows how to skates comes on with players, skates around on their own before both teams do and then gets their name(s) announced just like the players.

The Welsh anthem, sung in the native language of the original Britons, the Welsh, was written by a father & son. It is about the language, the people, the culture, the land, it is surely what an anthem should reflect & is the most noble anthem of all. Love & respect from a Scot. ♥💙

    English translation
The old land of my fathers is dear to me,
    Land of bards and singers, famous men of renown;
Her brave warriors, very splendid patriots,
    For freedom shed their blood.
Country, Country, I am faithful to my Country.
While the sea [is] a wall to the pure, most loved land,
O may the old language [sc. Welsh] endure.
Old mountainous Wales, paradise of the bard,
Every valley, every cliff, to my look is beautiful.
Through patriotic feeling, so charming is the murmur
Of her brooks, rivers, to me.
If the enemy oppresses my land under his foot,
The old language of the Welsh is as alive as ever.
The muse is not hindered by the hideous hand of treason,
Nor [is] the melodious harp of my country

Interesting fact I only learnt recently, apparently Wales created the idea of singing national anthems before matches. We were playing the All Blacks and needed a response to the Hakka so we sang our anthem.
