Palestinian Diplomat Hanan Ashrawi on the U.S. “Peace Plan” & Israeli Political Crisis

  • Israel will hold new elections after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a coalition government in six weeks of negotiations following the April 9 election. This marks the first time in Israeli history a prime minister-designate has failed to form a coalition government. The news comes as the United States is continuing to promote a controversial Middle East peace plan drawn up by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is in Israel today along with special envoy Jason Greenblatt. But the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the political crisis in Israel could kill the U.S. plan, which will be partially unveiled at a conference in Bahrain next month. Palestinian officials have vowed to boycott the conference and dismissed any attempts to tackle peace talks in the region without addressing human rights and the Israeli occupation. We speak with longtime Palestinian diplomat Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee. The United States recently denied Ashrawi a visa to enter the country.

      Do you ever have anything positive to say?
      All over youtube in various videos you spread your negativity and it is becoming redundant...
      Wonder how you would feel that your mother was dying and needed specialized care in another country, yet, she was refused a visa...
      Then people around you said "she dies then she dies; she is an elder and let her death make room for us to breath because she is no longer useful to us"

    This is a great representation of what is with going on in the Middle East in general and Palestine specifically. Just looking at the map of Palestine since 1947. Who is Jared Kushner and what are his qualifications in all of his self promotion? Yes, he knows about real estate so he can advise Israel about land grabs. Beyond that in the US, we have met the enemy and they are us.

    Hanan Ashrawi is an honorable, courageous, educated woman, that has consistently articulated the situation on the ground which often times shows the U.S. as a submissive, puppy when it comes to a one-sided policy in full compliance with Israel's Occupation, much to the detriment of going against what America once stood for (pre-1948).
    Even if Dr. Ashrawi wanted a visa in order merely to see relatives; when dishonorable, cowardly, self-serving, and ignorant men stand in opposition to anyone that rightfully calls out the tail (Israel) that wags the big American dog; if Dr. Ashrawi was able to step foot on American soil, she would automatically be viewed by some as "The Most Dangerous Woman in America."
    The truth, while it sets some of us free; for the rich and powerful that run from that truth, they merely piss on the graves of the people who gave up so much during WWII believing they were fighting against fascism on behalf of the oppressed.

    There's only one solution I can see regarding the Palestinian/Israeli conflict... A One-State solution in the form of a Secular Democratic-Republic, with population-based representation and Freedom of Speech and Religion written into the Constitution. Israel needs to be held to account for its actions in Gaza and the West Bank, including its repeated violations of international law. That means not just a loss of foreign funds such as military aid, but also sanctions placed upon the import of all Israeli goods. Either Israel can form a secular government in full partnership with the Palestinians, cease their occupation and their illegal settlements, or they face the loss of funds and trade that sanctions would bring. Israel has a right to exist, but not at the expense of the Palestinian people. What's needed is an equal partnership between Arabs and Jews, under the auspices of a Secular Republic.

    Listen to this a second time and also read the Ambassador Friedman God Is On Our Side piece in the N Y Times. I can't believe the huberis of our ambassador to Israel saying such a thing. It became clear to me the Trump administration's position vis-a-vis the Israelies with he moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Add to that the temerity of Trump's position on the Golan Heights, Bibi's statement that he convinced Trump to say what he did, Bibi's coming to the US to speak to Congress during the Obama administration, and now Bibi's going to name a section of the Heights for Trump. What huberis!!! "Pride cometh before a fall," and coming from the Book of Proverbs I trust Trumps and Bibi's administrations would appreciate this biblical counseling.

    I have always supported Palestinian statehood and I believe that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights violates international law but in fairness, the Palestinians themselves have sometimes been their own worst enemy in this regard. In 2000, former Israeli PM Ehud Barak who was elected on a platform that he would bring peace between Israel and its neighbors offered the Palestinians 97% of the West Bank (East Jerusalem was not included) and the Syrians the entire Golan in exchange for a peace deal similar to the one Israel signed with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994. As part of the 1979 deal, Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula - which is much larger than Israel itself - to Cairo. The transfer was completed in 1982 and Israeli settlers had to abandon their homes and move to Israel proper. But because the Barak Plan did not restore the pre-1967 border between Israel and Palestine, the Palestinians and Syrians rejected the plan. No, it was not a perfect plan but I believe that if the plan had been accepted, there would be peace between Israel and the Arab States today. It remains one of history's great missed opportunities.

    @guiller2371 Před 5 lety +4

    The problem is not to bring God into the conflict, the real problem is to speak unfairness in the name of God.
    You expect God to be in the side of the rule of law. When we see God supporting wars it was because the sins of those nations got to the extreme. At the time God's people became as evil as the nations they defeated, God also sent a nation against them.
    God makes no exception of persons. The only enemy of God is the one that plays the side of evil.
    Unless you are in the business of doing justice or practicing mercy, don't use God's name.

They spied on the Russian fleet that aided Egypt and spied on ISRAEL (Then days, Israel and the US were not allies).
