Tom stalks the mean streets of New York City with the poise, grace, stealth and attitude of an alley cat marking his territory, with a knowledge of every inch of his turf, built on years of roaming in pursuit of suitable prey
Macys continues to use Wooden escalators in the Harold square store. Weirdly interesting !!
I remember them in the oldest original part of the store. I have not been there in 20 years and used to be there daily 🤔 There was always a joke “Does Macy’s tell Gimbles?” The subway went directly into “Gimbals basement” . I remember a black Nd white dress my size that mom found on the floor. It was a good quality but sold to my Mom for $2 which was still a lot of money then. There is scaffolding everywhere - all the time.
Very weird
Horace Greeley: " Go West young man !"
( & Cosby bit was comic gold )
Tom you're still the best !
Men if you ever get too famous please keep this videos alive, pure gold this is
You HAVE TO watch these videos all the way through not just for the education lesson but for Tom's humor and antics👍😎👍
This guy not only gives a great tour but you always learn something new about NYC and hes funny!
Don't forget that 9th Ave Square, Lincoln Square!
Does anyone remember opposite Macy, on the corner - a big Toys R Us building. They had a huge merry go round inside in the middle of mall but up a glass elevator not on main floor. Some stores had a HANDS ON children encouraged to play tables. I lived in Queens at the time so took the bus over the 59th Street bridge with a two to four year old. From LI Nassau County took the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) into Penn Station and walked a little. We didn’t have much money and this was a day of exploration and enjoyment. We brought our own snacks and I was never afraid then!
I was just thinking about a Tom video and BAM!!!
Underrated as hell. Awesome videos and very knowledgeable
These tours are fantastic as always. I remember Manhattan Mall when it used to be A&S Plaza
Those were good times, when the neon McDonald's was in the basement 👌🏻
Great tour but that was were gimbles was the building housing H&M on 34st across from Macys was EJ Korvettes . Closed in 1970’s I think?
,s
@@arthurweisberg261 as a teenager I used to shop at EJ Korvettes. That was back in the 70s. Brings back a lot of memories.
A&S, YESS!!
The corner of Macys where the red star covers the corner has a history lesson too!
liked the Basic Instinct styled leg cross
One of my earliest memories is at Gimbals probably the year before it closed. There is a hidden tunnel under it that is pretty scary.
Pill Cosby…. Soon suing Pennsylvania and Tom Delgado.
You must really love the "squares!"--Union Square, Madison Park, Herald Square, Times' Square
Your awesome tom
Good tour guy thanks 😊
🤣The way Tom just said "hey there, how you doing?" to the pigeon 🐦 that flew into the frame. Funny. 🤣
The biggest Woolworths, lunch counter and all was opposite of Macy on 34th street. (Gimbals was 33rd-32nd). St Francis of Assisi church between 32nd and 31st.) Every trip had all three stops - subway into Gimbals, take escalator upstairs to main floor, walk to other end - cross street and go into back door of St Francis up the block from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Then walk over to Macy’s ……the only place two generations visited Santa (yours truly & off spring). Special Memories!
Besides he didn't mention St Francis ( maybe b/c as I remember have to walk west down the street to get to entrance) and when he mentioned the Miracle on 34thSt.didn't mention specifically that is where not only the movie was made about but where Santa appeared in the ist floor window and you could see from the street the childern visit Santa.Besid3s the Christmas window
it was a landmark event for any child in NYC to go visit Santa at the Herald Square Macy's (the same Santa who is on the float which starts at Macy's in the famous Macy's Christmas Parade w/ the Big inflatable cartoon characters which is televised throughout the country.
The old Herald Square Hotel 19 W 31st, now the Life New York Hotel, was the legendary home of LIFE Magazine.
The Herald Square Hotel used to have all of the original LIFE Magazine covers framed around the hotel and was a hidden gem slightly off the beaten track.
Times square is named After the times…you cant even begin to comprehend How mindblown I am right now. Its like I figured out the door to another dimension… wtf
I love the square series!!!
Tom thanks for the videos. I say it again your knowledge of history etc is extraordinary. I just also watched your Titanic video and learned some new things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really appreciate your hard work. Your channel is growing...congrats!
"Crazy Latin danc'in Solo down in Herald Square"..Billy Joel, Album 52nd Street, Rosalinda's Eyes.💓👏🐨🇦🇺
H&M (Huge Momma). That made my day Stew. 👍🏽
Yeah..that was pretty funny!
Still waiting for the 100' Pigeon statue to go up in Herald Square.
Tom is one of my favorite NYC squares.
You forgot to mention that small building on the corner(with the Macys shopping bag on top) which refused to sell to them so Macys built around it
Hey Tom. I’ve watched about 6 of your videos. I can say I’m a fan now. I like your presence format better then most walkers on YT. I drove a yellow cab #7F98 in the 90s. Family biz. I love my old city.
Great work!
I'm pretty sure H+M stands for Huge Momma
With all that information you can speak fluently, Spanish version should be done for each of your travels.
Love it!
I used to leave Jersey after work every Saturdays afternoons, jump on a bus and walk all over Manhattan just for heck of it. There was lots of telephone booths inside NBC Studios, Rockefeller Center, and that was my sleeping bag till Sunday morning. My teens
Again.. I love your videos!! Thanks.
another good tour thanks
Love all your tours, always. #sickplugsallround

When you sat down for your intro. I truly believed you were going to take off your shoes like our wonderful, neighbor. Mr. Rodgers.

Regarding owls: (12:00) there's a high school on the Lower East Side I see from the J train to Brooklyn; there are stone owls all along the parapet.

Hi Tom,
My name is also Tom. I do enjoy your videos and the interesting pieces of trivia you add to them. I'll have to watch more of them .As I said, you remind me of this friend I had in Brooklyn I'd come up to visit. When we went out places, I was the one who said the trivia and he didn't appreciate it. I learned a lot about the Big Apple before I actually got there and a lot places I recognized from the movies. Years ago I worked for Gimbels in Pittsburgh so I had to see the Manhattan Mall. The building up from it was originally the Saks Department Store until he was remodeled. It was the same ones the had Saks Fifth Avenue that Gimbels later owned. I usually dressed like you so I wanted to look like a native and not a tourist. My last visit in 2009 I stayed at a hotel a block from the Empire State Building. When I was younger, I actually walked the route of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade from the New York Historical Society where the parade forms down to Herald Square. I was younger and had the stamina to do it. I can't do it now. There are videos on You Tube that show the old elevated trains that ran in Manhattan. I guess you've be thought to be Italian but I see by your name you are Hispanic so you have the Latin looks. like Italians. I'm I'll be sure to watch more of them and share a little of my own trivia. There are some nice pizza places near by so I hope you had a slice and a soda. Stay cool !
Tpm from Pittsburgh.
Good evening I enjoy your videos regarding NYC as a former New Yorker I already knew a lot but also learned a lot from your videos. For the sake of accuracy the 6th Ave El was demolished in 1939 many years after the IRT began operating. That aside keep up the good work.
Short n sweet from Preacher Tom. Much appreciated from this side of the pond here in England (Brexitland 🇪🇺🤭).
Great tour through NYC's Herald Square, love your channel!
Macy's is now a part of the "Federated" stores (just like, L&T, Bloomingdale's)
4:25 we have a Herald place in Syracuse! I wonder if the owners of our paper Harald Journal was from NYC!! 🧐
Tom, how about a Park Slope walking tour. My wife is from there. It would be cool.
Park slope & Smith Street area
You missed the Edison plaque at Macy's.
My aunt Violet loved Gimbels; it she believed it was a better store than Macy's!
Shout out to the dude with the shofar and the bucket drums lol only in New York 💜
OMG…Tommy D in the place to be
"What's the meaning of the Cockney expression 'Gordon Bennett!'?
The expression 'Gordon Bennett!' is an exclamation of incredulous surprise.
Origin - the short version
"Gordon Bennett!" is an expression of incredulity which alludes to the outrageous behaviour of the American sportsman, publisher and all-round hell-raiser James Gordon Bennett Jr."
🤣🤣🤣 Tom said hi to the 🐦 pigeon. 🤣🤣🤣
Ken filmed in Macy’s during the 2021 flower show, FYI. Probably why he got away with it, but he filmed every level. Was kinda cool.
I see you can't drive down Broadway in front of Macy's anymore when did that happen. ?
????
How do we request that you be added to TV announcers for various parades? They really could have used you for the celebration of essential workers during COVID.
the very first moving pictures were filmed in Harold Square according to the HISTORY OF NEW YORK (Ken Burns)
I am such a child. I laughed a bit to much at the statue getting it's a$$ scrubbed
Sound, audio on, sent message to my son , who is Architecture, designer. He will love these videos, hope he will suscribe... Great work.🌝🇩🇰🇺🇸🎶📫
El único CZcamsr que vale la pena
And you’re fun too!
Tom, can you do a shopping video( not too pricey stores pls)
Thanks
would you consider adding English subtitle in the future? (not auto)
what is/was your view of the recently decided issue regarding relocating Madison Square Garden to accomodate the Renovtion/upgrading of the once great Penn Station? 16:58
Has he done one where he goes to Myrtle and Broadway?
There's also a statue of Horace Greeley in City Hall Park, so I'm wondering: which Horace came first?
❤️❤️❤️
Is October a good time to visit NYC?
