- In this episode of Everything Music we explore the 6th mode of the Melodic Minor Scale Locrian Natural 2. It is one of my favorite scales for improvising over a Half Diminished (Min7b5) chord.

I now have two all-time guitar heroes: Pat Metheny and Rick Beato. No joke! I just wish that I were as far along in my music-playing journey as you are, Rick. You are an inspiration! Thank you!
+Ron White Thanks so much! Rick
Can't wait to hear what you compose for the Aeolian Major/ Hindu mode of the melodic minor (5th mode). That's one of my favorites!
mix b13
And it sounds like this... And it sounds like this...
Awesome lesson about using that natural 2 and triads. Thank you👍🏾
Great sound! that first line sliding up the G minor arpeggio and ending on the natural 2 of the E half diminished reminded me a lot of Pat Metheny
Beautiful phrasing!!!! You are such a great inspiration!!!
Locrian ♮ 2 Mode [ Nicolas Slonimsky Thesaurus: Heptatonic Scales; reference number 1039 ]
Great video Rick. lots of great ideas.
Bonito ... Me encanta este video. Claro y al grano. Gran trabajo ... rc
This mode, as Rick played it, really sounds good over that chord.
Such a bittersweet mode. Beautiful playing Rick! The cue "Graysmith" from the movie Zodiac, composed by David Shire is a beautiful study in this mode - worth a listen!
Since trying to play solos, I now know what Albert meant when he said Imagination is more important than knowledge.
I'm researching the Lochrian mode for a composition project, so of course I had to see what you had to say on the subject. As always, very informative.
By the way - just had to comment - I have that same guitar. Well, almost. Mine's in Gibson's classic wine red, plus it has a bound fingerboard. I bought it new in 2000. A great guitar. Gotta love those P90s!
how did anyone dislike this video. thanks for sharing your approach.
best explanation yet! thank you
Hey Rick: great vid!
my guess why you like the sharp2 locrian here over the usual flat 2 is b/c you're emphasizing the minor chord built from the 3rd of the half-diminished chord (G min here within E half diminished) and when that becomes the tonal focus the dominant of that will take precedence (here D7, hence emphasizing the F# 3rd, which just wants to resolve to that G naturally). So it really becomes a question of polychordal preference really, as there are other simple min and major triads nested within the e half diminished chord.
Just my analytical 2cents:)
This lesson helped me crack one of the many codes with the the melodic minor section in the Guitar Grimoir. Awesome stuff! Any hints on going about the rest of a book with every mode and scale ? 😂 seeing now that they all work together like the major scale is an important learning curb for the self taught guitarist who has plateaued! Theory can be overwhelming sometimes which is why BASICS are the foundation! 1-3-5 can go a long way for me theory on guitar keeps getting easier but I go down rabbit holes not having a firm ground. 🎉🎉 awesome vid
Great teacher. This man has forgotten more than I will ever know.
Oh man. I gotsa learn my modes.
Killer tutorial so I gathered you build a minor triad over the minor third as well as a major triad a fifth up and also one a fifth down from that
Damn he's good. Thought he was just mostly a producer
Great Video as always! Are there any songs / soundtracks on this mode that one can hear as examples of how this is used? Anyone please feel free to respond. Cheers
Hey Rick, why did you choose not to go through all the triads on this one?
There is a lot of locrian sharp 9 in Bill Evans' Israel, both in the improvised melody lines and in the chord progression. In his usual minor voicing 3579, it becomes 357natural9, so he plays an Em7b5 chord as G Bb D F#. From there he goes to A7 alt 7 #9 3 b6 - G C C# F and then to Dminor6 (3569 or F A B E). In one of the Bill Evans recordings that has been transcribed (not sure which recording without checking, nor who transcribed it), check out bars 33 - 35, the line he plays over Em7b5#9, A7#9, Dm69. It does sound really good.
On the ii⁰ V i you mention at the end:
Emin7b5#9 = Emin7b5
The #9 of E is F## which is G, since the #9(#2) is enharmonic to a b3. It isn't correct to write a minor chord with a #9 since it is the minor third. If you were referring to it being a spread voicing or drop voicing, that would make sense, but would be redundant in the naming still.
I'm amazed at how many scales you know, and how you play them across the entire fretboard.I have never heard of alot of these scales, especially this one. I find it really hard just to memorize one scale to the point where I can play up and down the neck like that.
I know this doesn't pertain to this video, but can you please do a video on how to write effective basslines?
I can never seem to get my basslines right all I know is playing the root, fifth and octave over a chord.
Do your modes, you'll get most of the "other" scales. This is from melodic minor. If you know melodic minor, you know this one.
Good call on the bassline video. I'd like to see Rick's take on that.
Greg Sloan For a start into basslines, check Rick's video on Introduction to the Techniques of Joe Pass (I'm paraphrasing the title). He doesn't go into depth, but he does discuss Joe's use and construction of walking basslines there.
Some good formulas are typically 1-2-3-5 of the chord, as well as approaching the next chord by half-step (either from above or below) on the beat before it.
Best of luck!
@rickbeato One can play this scale over a dominant 9#11 chord, right?
Just hear Allan Holdsworth...Velvet Darkness. sounds like you heard it too.....in some of your licks...cool....rc
Rick, can I use locrian natural 6 from harmonic minor over a ii7b5 on a ii7b5-V-i progression?
yes, you can. the halfstep between the natural 6 and the flat 7 does a great job of getting the chord tone across, becuase it really wants to go to that flat 7. perfect voice leading would be to go there.
Hey Rick, say it's a ii half diminished chord in a minor key. Would you be worried that if you use this scale the natural 2 would suggest you're in major?
This scale has a very Egyptian sound. Harmonic minor has a very dark and Arabian Locrian natural 6 has a very beautiful and Egyptian sound
Mmm that color is very reminiscent of Pat Metheny
I think that's because of guitar tone.
Didn't you use to have a video on regular Locrian?
The Locrian is one of the least used and most awkward modes to use, there isn't much information on using it unless you want to play over specific chords.
is that also call b9 b13?
Hey Rick Beato, could you do a video ok the Lydian-b7 scale / Mixolydian-b6 ?
HanBurritoz The Siiiimpsoooooons ;)
Well, it is in this video, isn't it? If G melodic minor is I, then IV is C lydian b7 and V is D mixolydian b6 (and VI is E lokrian ♮2).
2:50 lol
Hey Rick could you tell me what the chords in this string-sound backing track you have there are?
m7b5
I really enjoyed your video!
Very informative and creative.
Thank you for taking the time to make it.
However calling the scale Locrian #2 does raise a question for me.
If you are calling the 6th degree of the G melodic minor scale E Locrian #2…
Help me understand why you have called that scale Locrian.
I am curious why that would not be E Aeolian b5?
It seems to me that the Locrian scale of G melodic minor
would be F# Locrian b4.
No?
+outsidenow Because it's played over minor seven flat five chords. Just like Locrian is
+Rick Beato ok. I think that I understand why you see it the way that you do...instead of looking for the name of the mode based on the scale degree, you base it on what chord is formed from the root within the key. So Eø7 (of G melodic minor) would normally be associated with the 7th degree of F ionian, therefore you look at the E scale (from G melodic minor) as Locrian with a natural 2.
Am I getting how you see it?
rick the great ..where can i find a good pdf book for whichs chords are generated for each mode in every key??
Understand the theory behind it and make you own, believe me you will learn a lot,if possible make fingerboard diagrams too......
D7 Aug, too.
Can anyone up here pls tell which mode is used in "high hopes"
The keyboard tone doesn't really establish the root key with clarity against the mode tonality
a banner ad covered up the flat5,,,lol,,,,,, love the show ,,,,zappa loved sus 2 stuff.....alphonzos breakfast pancake house ,,,
Is Locrian natural 2 similar with half diminished scales?
It is often called THE dimished scale
I mean half diminished :P
This truly is a secret. It all sounds so foreign to me. I'm troubled to find how I would fit this in a movie. I guess in the interlude after a dramatic scene into the mystery of another.
Bjork Army of Me
I heard Gloomy Sunday.
Me too.
Why not aeolian b5?
because the key note of locrian is that b5. the key note of this scale is the b5 as well. calling it aeolian wouldnt make sense.
You are technically corect. Call it that if you want to. :)
Voivod ... finally
Oh just kidding. I like you to, Locrian.
wow Anthony Bourdain can really play
Not being a musician I'm only versed in the 'Commode.' 🤣
