- Sadly with the imminent death of Mario Maker 1 coming in April of 2024, there are many levels I haven't yet had the chance to play...including some of the best in the game! So in today's video I'm going to be playing the 1 Year Mario Maker celebration levels (mariomaker.phgizmo.com/search/..., which are regarded as some of the best levels you can play in Mario Maker 1!

I appreciate the koopa narrative--necromancing the corpse of a deceased koopa, trailing the koopa through childhood and watching it grow big. And when it is smashed by the thwomp it returns with angelic wings. Inspirational.
Yeah, the koopas are known for their black magic…

I think I would have liked them more if they weren't treated as a powerup. Having to constantly add them throughout the level to account for the player taking damage got incredibly annoying
Why would palette swapping or variants be such a big deal? The answer is... they wouldn't. It's not the least bit difficult when compared to coding just about anything and everything else in a video game.
I miss them. Gave more variation in the creative stuff people made.
I have to wonder, if Nintendo has a habit of erasing their online content, then what's the point?
I guess it's good to live in the moment, but all our memories are being destroyed.
Anyone can pick up their SNES carts from a decade ago, given that the battery isn't dead, they can pick up where they left off. You can't even do that with a console as recent as the wii or wii-u. So sad to think about.
I think this is the earliest I've ever gotten to a DGR video. I actually only got into Mario Maker starting with 2, so your videos are the first time I actually saw the Amiibo costumes. They are pretty cool actually! Thanks for all your great content! As a fellow dad of 2 girls, I can appreciate all the hard work you put in!
God yes I miss Amiibo costumes. I miss levels where the level was themed around the character that only made sense WITH the costumes.
This was one of my favorite episodes that you have done. Super cool levels! Thank you for revisiting MM1 (despite the horrendous vertical scrolling)!
I liked the amiibo costumes but I felt slighted by many of them being locked behind a paywall or an insane difficulty wall.
They were cool costumes. These levels should be recreated for MM2 since they are about to be lost in time.
Amiibo costumes were nice, but Nintendo didn’t want to bother remaking them for each of the 4 characters lol.
Edit: People didn't seem to understand why each costume would need to be remade for each character. Imagine you are playing multiplayer and get the Koopa costume for example. If everyone turned into a green Koopa, how would you know which Koopa is you? They would have to make one red, one green, one blue, and one pink. They would have to do that with every costume.
To be fair that would have been like, 10s of hours of work!
They wouldn't have to? Its not like there is a different costume for the different characters.
What are you even talking about? All the characters are just reskins of mario with no different abilities. All they did was change it from 90 skins to 4. They could've kept all the skins the same and it would've worked fine because the only reason they even added the 4 characters was for distinguishing players in multiplayer.
They didnt want to spend the time or money relicensing them all and also there were actually plenty of people who didnt like them. They wouldnt have had to remake them though. Licensing is a pain, you'd be surprised how many of "Nintendo"s characters arent 100% owned by nintendo.
Amiibos have also largely died out in popularity whereas back when SMM1 came out they were all the rage.
Wdym, they would all just turn into the same thing why would they need one for each character?
Not many guys in contemporary American society today can use the word "dadgummit" with such natural sincerity.
I don't have a wii u but I hope there's some kind of preservation project to bring back the online server like Wiimmfi

I definitely miss the Amiibo costumes. My first, and really only, level featured one ever so briefly. See, it was a sort of high skill Kaizo level done by precise jumps and constant forward momentum, mostly because I made it short with a tight timer. However, while you started as the Bowser Amiibo costume, you lost it within the first few jumps, returning to Mario. I built a reason for this. The super hard kaizo-ish level was the Mario path for the super skilled Mario players, of which I can't really say I was. Making this whole path took a lot of trial and error, as well as abuse of the trail feature in level testing design. I did test each part, however, to ensure it could be won so I didn't make an unwinnable level in that regards. I did, however, put in a secret 'Bowser backdoor' path that I tried my best to hide, but visible pipe is visible. Regardless, the P switch was hidden to make it seem impossible to enter. For Bowser's path, he takes an underground path to his clown car, travels to the other side, and arrives at the axe to be ready to fight (and hopefully beat this time), Mario. I thought it quite clever but I never really figured out how many people played it, much less took the Kaizo path to victory as I'm pretty sure the explorative group would have managed to find the hidden P switch pretty easily (first level near the beginning of it's release). I also didn't really watch CZcamsrs until I got to playing Mario Maker 2, so didn't know anyone that could get it visually seen. If you happened to play it, that's extremely cool, but I'm unsure of what the level code for it is so I can't really share it here.
(looks at title) Yes. Also, I wish I could have submitted some of these levels to StephenPlays. He used to do daily single level videos of Mario Maker.

You miss the costumes, but then you remember the levels that make you a spring board in a room of a hundred springboards.

I kind of miss the costumes and was really hoping to see some Jumpu Girl in this episode.
The irony of seeing a level called 1-1 Remix scroll across the screen at the end is not lost on me.
Of course and that is why I am unlocking them now.

With the game shutting down that means you better clear all the uncleared levels quickly

Yes, we all miss them... But it makes sense that they aren't in Super Mario Maker 2... Think about it. In multiplayer it would be even more difficult to recognize your character.
Simple enough solution, they could just have just made it so that amiibo powerups in multiplayer instead do an alternate color sprite for your selected character so you can still tell there is a powerup on, but not necessarily cause chaos by having multiple people with the same amiibo.
@@DamienCooleythey already exclude certain levels from multiplayer. if it's really a problem, just exclude these too
I'm a little sad that I missed the entirety of MM1. When it first came out it felt like everyone was playing and making levels. I really wanted to try some of the more challenging levels because they don't actually look that hard. I however disagree about the Amiibos not being in MM2. Everything they changed about Mario Marker was to make levels more fair and equal. No pipe stacking, no random lanky Mario. Nothing like cheesing a level because of a random power up. Amiibos just introduced too many factors that could break levels. Yes they were near, great call backs to older games but including them was not in the spirit of what they were doing with Mario Maker 2.
I thought the little girl amibo was the bestest. Jumpu girl.
Was really disappointed when I heard she was not in the sequel.
SMM2 was made in a whole new engine and also they'd have to be designed for all the 4 characters, so yea, they'd be even more work to add than even first time around. Sad, but understandable.

Ammibo costumes were fun and a great way to sell Amiibo. If they make a Mario Maker 3 I hope rather then costumes, they make unlockable characters who represent actually having new abilities
but yah, Amiibos added to the story telling of the adventure. Sadly locked you in to SMB1 format but they added to the story.
Pay as Link with the sword Power up was fun too but Mario Maker needs more like Play as Samus complete with gun power or Play as Kirby, play as Simon, Play as Star Fox. Each time with new powers on ly that person has. and give them a health bar so one hit doesn't revert you to Mario
How about noooooooooo.. Noone wants to have to learn 107 different characters playstyles in a game that is already too ambiguous.

I definitely miss amibo being used. While I think Mario Maker 2 is in ways a better game, it definitely sacrificed a lot of good things from the first game. Making it subjectively worse.
Sad that you ddn't collect the big mushroom at the end of the first level.
It's also sad that you don't get to play Quantum Plumbing.

As someone who only started with MM2, i definitely feel late to the party since mm2 doesn't have these extra costume power ups lol. Personal opinion, i of course think Nintendo should put this in MM3 if thats ever even existent 😅

Definitely glad the amiibo costumes are gone actually. I know I'm not the only one who hated being forced to play in some dumb costume just to have a powerup or in most cases to be required to beat the level and 90% of the amiibo costumes are butt.

To my understanding, they wanted to add Amiibos into Mario Maker 2, but had to cut them. Likely due to time constraints.
