Regarding the combat stuff, I haven’t seen anyone mention the similarity it has to ME2 and 3’s combat. 2 companions, no direct control over them, an ability wheel that can be brought up and slows/stops everything, including your and companions’ abilities in the wheel.
I don’t mind that at all! In fact the more the devs decided to borrow/adapt from ME the happier I am. It feels like they’re looking at some super successful examples in their past and taking a page from that book.
The huge focus on companions and characters also reminds me of ME2’s entire focus being that as well. The mentions of “choosing who to take with you, and them affecting how the story and missions go” also reminds me a lot of ME2’s suicide mission. Maybe we’re building to one big final mission where our choices and companion loyalty affect how that mission goes.
    Excited, tbh

It was explained as "soft control of characters,3 skills that can be key bound into the combat circle" I'm intrigued not bothered about having 2 companions instead of 3 as much and I like the detonation system they rolled over from mass effect.

8:13 on consoles we have ability wheel since DAO. I never felt like i need more buttons on the controller, because when you choose your abilities, game is on pause. Maybe, in multiplayer game where everything is in real time that would have been a problem, but in single player game it's perfectly fine.

Idk how to feel about the companion system. It feels like they’re going the mass effect route with bringing only 2 companions along and having an action wheel to control their abilities. I feel like everyone loves the party banter so not being able to hear dialogue between more characters in the party might be a bit limiting. Having Sera/Blackwall/Solas or Dorian/Solas/Vivienne was amazing bc it highlighted all of their personalities and dynamics at once. At least we have an update though…I’m so excited to see the gameplay trailer!!!

That's more or less my fear as well, however I think if they compensate for this in other ways it could be a good decision. Like having lots more dynamic, or instances of companions interacting outside the field, maybe when you go to different areas the companions might join with you but stay at camp affording some interactions that way etc etc. I do feel like we wont be able to control the companions at all this time though, which I'm not a fan of, I really liked doing that in the past games to set up specific and complicated combos

I love the new focus on characters, it’s what has pushed BioWare games forward. Not really a big fan of romances in video games, but anything that gives more player agency is a good thing. This is increasingly more important in rpg games as too many games have tried copying the same rpg formula of breath over depth. Excited to see the storylines of the characters in veilguard.

  • @cedion
    @cedion Před 2 měsíci +2

Your opinions echo my own, especially about the 3-party change. My hope is that DA4 will have a lot of in-city based missions, going through tight alleys, sneaking through the docks, blending into a busy marketplace and doing that with your 2 other companions feels like a proper small-scale mission. It personally would give me the feeling of a proper team with proper banter. Even in previous iterations of DA, whenever party banter was a thing, 90% it was just between two characters, at most talking about the protagonist but very rarely did we have a 3-way companion banter while out on missions. Now with the setting changing and the role of our new protagonist, I think the 3man party is an appropriate change.
Combat changes are also welcomed, I don't mind whatever direction they go into as long as it feels right to play. Having an ability wheel sounds intriguing enough and I'll hold my judgement till we see the gameplay trailer in a few days.
Romance, I also agree with you. This is at the end of the day still an RPG, we should enrich players experience and not punish them for not fitting into a certain mold to romance someone. I always preferred the way they did it in DA2 and I'm glad BG3 kind of brought this back from the dead. Here is hope this is actually what the article meant and not us interpreting it the wrong way.
Regarding the companions. I actually hope that most of them are not from any comics/books, but completely fresh and new ones. I dislike the idea of players being able to read up on those characters and figure out their motivations/personality before they even get to shine in the games, which are the main medium of the franchise. It's the reason why I really disliked the way they handled Cole in DAI, since it took away almost all of his mystique.

As far as gameplay goes. I do not like going to only 3 people party size and wwhat seems like even less control over our companions. I was really hoping theyd go back to more tactical gameplay. I guess we will see for sure on tuesday how it will look.
I wonder how that statement will go about romance. I personally really like how they did it in inquisition. Everybody having their own sexualities felt more real to me than the way da2 did it. I originally got hooked onto the dragon age series by its tactical pause-and-play combat. So the lack of it in Veilguard is bummer. But also, Inquisition showed how rough the top-down tactical combat was in the Frostbite engine, so maybe this is the best dragon age experience they are able to give us given their engine restrictions. I'll learn to like it if it's well implemented and has cross-class combos.

Companions dying/leaving based on your choices is hardly a novelty. It's been a thing since DA Origins. This just feels like a further dumbing down of an RPG to appeal to the shooter bros.

Is that 6 out of 7 he nailed?
Although I dislike the design of the bow I am happy about there being more mixed class archetypes. Especially with fewer companions you can't control. It felt difficult in Inquisition to make a character that couldn't be replaced by any other companion. Strategically, you were also doubling up on at least one archetype, which always feels excessive. I don't NEED two Cassandra's usually, so I (a warrior tank) would hardly use Cassandra. Unless it's a dragon, and without playing on harder difficulties not even then. It's always a shame to only bring a character out for more menial tasks, because the banter feels less impactful when you're kind of waiting for it.
So I'm all for fewer companions, because having a strategic motivation to switch out my party more often seems good, and keeps companions from collecting dust.
Personal taste but I'm looking forward to the tall, dark, and maybe brooding crow companion.

That’s just my 2 cents on that situation haha. I’ve never had the issue of too many buttons when playing on console, and when I did play on pc it was nice to have more spells but wasn’t really game breaking if that makes sense? Sad only 3 party members instead of 4 which was perfect for the trinity, 1 tank, 2 dps, 1 healer. I guess each class is more self reliant.
