Panthers complete collapse = (another) electoral college landslide, reminiscent of 2011 & 2014 when 49 states basked in south Florida's sports fan misery.
There are legitimate reasons dynasties don't exist anymore. The previous Oilers cups were won before the salary cap. Teams were able to stack their teams with star players, provided they had the money. Back then, and to this day, Edmonton sells out every single night, win or lose, so they had the money to afford to keep their star-studded lineup. Additionally, all NHL teams are now more defensively aware than they were in the days of the Oiler dynasty, making scoring much more difficult. McDavid's accomplishments, when you take these differences into consideration, are much more impressive than they might at first appear. Greg clearly does not know hockey.

when gretzky won his first cup there were 21 (?) teams in the league, no salary cap and the nfl and cfl had player salary parity. it's harder to build a team and keep it together to win multiple cups these days.
Gretzky only won 1 Conn Smythe in his 4 championships. The Oilers also won again right after he left. That doesn't mean he's not the goat...

I wonder if these guys know about how different hockey is when it comes to winning the cup than other sports. You cant and will never win the stanley cup with one guy. Wayne the great one didn't win the cup without a crazy stacked Oilers team in the 80s. This is why it's hard for teams to win the cup back to back to back.

I think that the Florida panthers are over rated, come on. Over 30 years in the league and never won a Stanley Cup. Other expansion teams have won, so what's going on with the panthers. They were supposed to walk over the Oilers, who are so overwhelmed to your greatness.
It’s basically a refried “ringzzz” argument. As with most of those arguments, it’s dumb and unfair inside the context of teams sports, especially w/someone like McDavid who actually performs in the playoffs.
Hell, even in that article they flashed, Cote said Gretzky helped the Oilers win 5 Cups, but it was only 4. Oilers were so good they won another Cup w/o their best player. You need a great team to win.
