    I want to explain the dedication part of the video. I had limited footage to work with (for the main construction part) because of all the people and visitors that came to the property over the previous week. So I wanted to do something for everyone that had commented about losing someone close recently. A couple are CZcams channels I watch that may be going through a tough transition. Some are regular viewers and commenters like you that have told me how my channel helps. The scenery of the plane ride was a longer segment of the video for all to enjoy but dedicated to all those who have experienced a recent loss of family or friends. I highlighted a few that I had taken notes on while reading the comment section. Please know that I read all comments on every video I post and I apologize that I cannot get back to all of them! But I sure do try!

    I lived in Alaska for 21 years (bailed out in 2011) and just have to say how truly impressive it is that you managed to find an awesome and dedicated contractor/crew. The guys are knocking it out and making fantastic progress during this relatively short window of time to get SO much accomplished. Such a valuable relationship/connection to foster. The work they are doing is going to make an enormous difference this coming winter. Wishing you all the best on your Alaskan adventures. eta: Root cellar issues to consider. Rodents can and will chew through plastic storage containers. I suggest investing in metal trashcans filled with sand as your best bet against the little beasts. Give some very serious consideration to your chosen method of pest control. While poison is tempting, there's always the possibility Kenai will come in contact with a poisoned critter.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety +4

      I lucked out finding my contractor for sure! He is very detailed and professional. Anyone would be happy with his craftmanship. He and his crew will be back for many more future projects guaranteed. If he is ever out in this area hunting or snow machining and needs a place to crash for the night, I told him that he and his family can always use the bunkhouse if needed. I am just happy that this roof will not be creaking and popping like the old roof. I swear that old roof was so close to collapsing! As for anything going to the root cellar, metal is king! Trashcans or barrels. No plastic or cardboard allowed! I want any mice that find their way into my root cellar to be very upset and leave. If not I currently use a flour/baking soda mix on the mice. They love the flour but cannot burp the baking soda so they literally explode inside. Kenai has no interest in it but even if he did, dogs can burp! And this little mutt sure can burp if he wants too! So no plans to ever return to Alaska? Thank you so much Crystal!

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska I fly up from time to time to visit with family. Now happily settled on 5 acres in NE WA, enjoying 4 seasons and growing a big garden. I lived in a homesteader's flat-roofed cabin for the first few years up there and remember the first time I heard that old roof pop and crack. Just about jumped out of my skin. Then there was the time when a bat flew through one of the only windows that actually opened. Had to get that thing OUT of the house using an old fishing net. Good times and always a challenge when you least expect it.
      They built cabins with just about anything they could get their hands on - which wasn't much! You can't beat the charm though and it's a joy to see you working on saving your place from being taken by the elements. Keep going, girl!

    The new roofline is a huge improvement. Your root cellar is massive. I would install spray foam insulation and install bear-proof doors. The decision on how to use that space is access dependent. Difficult to open doors with 6’+ snow load on them, so winter access is tough. If you could put in a staircase from above, then you can do all sorts of things. Install grow lights and grow cold weather veggies down there. Lots of pantry space!

      Yes! I have the same footprint as my entire first floor! It's an unusually big root cellar! Access from the main floor will be installed this construction period. Stairs down. I will reinforce the outside access but keep it secured from the inside so it can be used as a fire escape if needed. I will have a backdoor installed so I can keep the snow off the hatch as well. I will go into more detail in the next video. Now that I will have access this year, I can monitor the temperatures to see if growing will work. I have no clue actually how cold it gets down there. Many shelves will be made for canning. Earthquake proof shelves! Thank you so much Deb!

I will look forward to your further installments and wish you all the very best with your new build and the reorganisation of your home once complete. Stay safe, keep well and good luck with all you do and i shall be following along the way. A couple of questions. How do you deal with your waste? e.g..Toilet, rubbish, etc. How far is your nearest neighbour? If you needed help in an emergency, do you have a radio or just the internet/phone? What is your long term plan..are you hoping to remain living as you are indefinitely? What possible reasons would make you decide to move back to 'civilisation'. Are your family following your channel and what do they think of your lifestyle now?

      Toilet is a 5 gallon bucket I use in the cabin. I can empty it in the outhouse though. Trash gets burned but recyclables get taken to a transfer station (dump) or I will take them to town and most of the big stores have recycle bins.
      My nearest neighbor is about 7-8 miles away by road. In an emergency, I can call 911 like anyone else but it ay take them some time to get to me! That is why I stress the first aid. I would like the EMT's to at least finally get to me with a pulse. I will also have a cleared out area for helicopter landing. Nothing too fancy just a clearing. But I do have two cell phones that get adequate reception. My plan is to get a satellite phone this year. I can get a VHF radio and possibly a CB radio in my vehicle.
      Long term plan is to get everything I need built so I can just maintain and live until I die. I do plan to die here. There is nothing that would convince me to move back to civilization. NOTHING! 😁My family does watch my videos and they support my life here. I have been talking about it for so long, they probably are glad I just went finally! But I have found that I talk to them a lot more now than I ever did in Colorado.
      Hopefully I answered all of your questions but please feel free to ask anything you like! Probably best to start a new comment though. Replies to my replies usually get lost in the shuffle! Thank you so much Christine and welcome to my journey! 😄

Access to the root cellar from the main floor will be happening this construction period. Stairs down as well. I opted not to do the rope climb up or down! :-) Video will be coming once that gets installed!

Root veggies in sand too! Everything will be metal for storage but probably wood shelving with a lip, padding and bungee cords. I have to make sure they are "earthquake proof"! Maybe a meat and fish processing area? And I can use that cool air to cool down the cabin somewhat! These 70-80 degree days are killing me! LOL! :-) Thank you so much BOB!

    Awesome contractor doing some great work. Congratulations. I encourage you to set the place up as an air b&b. With your own area. Think about adding a couple more bathrooms upstairs and using what you consider the winter entrance as a master suite for you. It’s big enough you could have a mini kitchen.

      I could offer the bunkhouse as an AirBnB but that would be last resort. I came up here for solitude. But I do have that option at least should I need it. The arctic entry could very easily be converted as well. There would need to be a lot of work to convert it as I don't know how popular a place would be that makes you use an outhouse or no private shower. Again, something I could always fall back on if needed. I'd rather just grow my channel and do that full time! LOL! At least I do enjoy that! Thank you so much Beverly!

    Wow - that was a lot of rat crud. Definitely, it was a good idea to get that out of there. I might suggest spray foam for the ceiling and walls. That will insulate everything, and you shouldn't have the rodent issue, because there's no way for them to get behind spray-on foam. This work is a lot of manual labor. Those new support beams had a vast amount of weight. This place is getting the repairs that it desperately needed. Good job.
    Loved the aerial shots. That's real wilderness.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety

      LOL yeah the mice had full run of the place for 6 years as it was unoccupied. I may use spray foam for the ceiling since it is basically the main floor of the cabin. The walls may get bubble foil as I don’t want to block the cold for the root cellar but I may be able to control how cold it gets by just closing up some of the wall. But spray foaming all the entrance holes for sure! This cabin is old but she has a lot more life in her now! Glad you enjoyed the plane ride! I know I sure did! Thank you so much Mike!

But that cabin roof sure is going to collect a lot of rain! That will be awesome! I wont get burned out of doing content. I really enjoy filming and editing! :-) Thank you so much Kevin!

    Hi, Alone. Nice to see you again ! The workers are doing an excellent job; the new roof pitch looks brilliant-all the angles. I wonder if you can put in led grow lights and have some kind of indoor garden? You can start seedlings and have a place for canning and preserving. Also, a workshop - workbench area. Maybe rabbits or chickens ? Is that possible inside ? !
    I admire your ambitious spirit and drive. I live in Montreal and my uncle once told me I should move up to Yellowknife. Not sure, but next year I'd like to find a rural property. Watching your progress and success at fulfilling your plans really helps me with my dreams. Thanks for showing us how it's done ! ' Off Grid with Doug and Stacey' is another great channel I like. Maybe you watch them ? ps.Kenai is such a nice dog, more of him too ! And more Dewey ! You're hilarious ! Take care. Mark.

      Hello Mark! Rabbits or chicken inside is possible but their feed also attracts mice. Usually better to keep that away from the cabin. They sure would enjoy the heated area though! Grow lights for seed starts will happen for sure though inside. until I can get a heated greenhouse. Now that the roof has a metal surface I can start collecting rain. Next year. No gutters yet. I actually have been watching Doug and Stacy for many years! I got a lot of ideas from them! Kenai is a teddy bear! He is my shadow! Don't worry though. He gets spoiled rotten! LOL :-) I have heard a lot of good things about Yellowknife! LIVE YOUR DREAM Mark! If you don't, you just might regret it later! Thank you so much Mark!

    The new roof seems to be comming along just fine. That was some beautiful scenery from the plane. I know it was even more spectacular in person. As far as the basement I say fix up a small room in one corner and let Dewey stay there let him pay his rent with small chores like removing the old insulation. Getting firewood for the house hauling water washing dishes you know stuff like that just don't trust him with interior design. He not so good at that. I'll bet he would jump at the opportunity anything has to be better then living with a Sasquatch.

    Wow, a major over haul - of a job, alright. Fantastic that you were able to find a skilled, experienced and reliable crew to do the job - the r-i-g-h-t way! So Awesome to watch. Thank God for these incredibly talented and skilled men - . I am amazed watching them work. And I am happy for you, to get it fixed correctly and have a sanitary, secure structure - once completed and ready for you to get it all set up the way you've wanted, needed. What a huge difference it will make for you. I've been there - where you are located and been from one end to the other- in Alaska. My daughter attended her university studies there. I visited every year each time I went to visit her those near six years - staying 2 months each time except for once I stayed for 3 months. It is a whole other lifestyle there, very laid back, slower paced - peaceful, beautiful and yes can be quite the change and in a good way. Perception and being sufficiently prepared is paramount. Been right there in Kenai - too and I absolutely loved and adored it. If being alone in complete solitude in God's breath taking creation of nature doesn't bring a person in touch with themselves- nothing will. Because it will certainly do that, it's very tranquil and peaceful, spiritual - makes one appreciate life - all around you, for sure. Spiritually awakening. The whales, the mountains, the goats on the mountain side cliffs, the wolves, bears, and that deep dark green ocean - the beautiful white and crystal light blue glaciers - all of it - is just mesmerizing - makes one feel in aw - so breath taking and same time surreal and even dangerous. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes on your home renovations!

I can hardly believe I am finally here after dreaming about it for so many years! And to be this remote and still find a skilled carpenter! I mean what are the chances!?
