So Proud of This Bike.

- My proudest creation as a bicycle framebuilder (so far) is this all-road adventure bike I built myself in early 2017. It's the fourth frameset I made for myself, named "Deepest Gravy" after the previous "Deep Gravy" and "Deeper Gravy" (all of which can be viewed in the bike galleries at cobraframes.net).
With this build I finally made myself a disc brake bike with a carbon fork. It's also the first bike I built with a 44mm head tube, and the first with a serious paint job by a specialist bike painter. Rudi at Black Magic Paint knocked it out of the park with the fade paint job.
Let me know if you enjoy this style of video, and I can post more about other bikes I've built, discussing what made them interesting from a framebuilder's perspective.

Man! This bike is definitely a piece of art! The cable routing looks exactly how I see it in my dream bike.
You know what made me sub ...the way you bounce it at the end ...no slap ...nice
Kings English?
That tip/hack about the dropout alignment for the wheel was golden and totally relatable. Love the content.
Thanks! Wheel alignment was hard enough for me in the start without thru axles!
Been a bike phreak/mechanic for about 30 years, and I gotta say NICE JOB. Great geometry, great spec, attention to detail, paint job, logo, everything. Beautiful.
I feel you on the fancy Joe! Beautiful bike.
Thanks, Steve. Yeah, I love making beautiful stuff but personally I don’t care so much if my bike is as refined as a handmade fiddle or something.
That is super nice. Those rear dropouts demand perfection.
Really nice bike and excellent work. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I did not know that about those dropouts! Great tip. Through axles have always given me trouble and I have tried to avoid them.
Amazing bike!
what a beauty!
Man i love your work, your channel deserves way more views. Keep up !
Thanks!
And great looking bike!
Beautiful !! Love the rear side, tube shape and size, derailleur hanger, welds....nice !!! main frame tube are great, perfect size. Chaingring is also a nice piece, Shim' & Sram are sadly underestimating the artistic value of a nice chainring.
nice painting too.
Great job 👌
Awesome, you've made a really nice bike. I think you made the right decision on the bottom bracket height, no one likes pedal strikes but opting for a lower bb means you have a frame which will have a more stable and nicer feel 99.9% of the time.
Great build.
Beautiful Bike !!!
Thanks!
Nice looking bike. You have the same ideas I have . Good job.
Nice bike...👍
That's a great looking bike. I like the fade on the paint.
Yeah the paint still really gets me.
When the hardtail build does come would love to see the process that you go through to make it!
One step ahead of you!
@@cobraframebuilding Hello from Murwillumbah, Australia!
I would also be very keen to see a hardtail frame build from you. I'm currently practicing my fillet brazing and will soon be looking for a jig/fixture in order to make what will be my second frame (the first having been a track frame in a framebuilding class).
Keep up the videos Joe, your channel is informative and keeps me motivated! 👊🤘
Sweet Bike! I love the total package!
That's a practical bike right there.
Practically perfect!
nice one!
Thanks! Stay tuned for the overview of my commuter bike build.
I love lower than average BB's but a bike that that is more limited as you noted. That's the problem with making bikes more capable by putting on larger tires, you then ride it on rougher terrain which begs for a geometry that is more off-road capable. 38 - 40c semi-slicks would go great on this bike.
Very nice work. A vid about the disc mounts would be great.
If you’re following the mtb build series you’ll see that step eventually.
@@cobraframebuilding i subbed. Looking forward to it. Thanks
What a beautiful bike and awesome channel! I am in the process of constructing a frame with a geometry similar to that using straight tube 4130. Diameters measured would you recommend from tubes for TT, DT, CS, SS?
I don't really know what the best diameters of tubing will be for you in your case, but on my bike I used 28.6mm TT, 31.8mm DT, columbus oval to round CS, and 16mm SS. What would be ideal for you is based on a combo of things and I'm not really an expert anyway. Something in the neighborhood of what I did shouldn't let you down.
Really like it! Where did you have your headbadge made? If you did it, how did you roll it? I had some made, but now I need to roll them somehow. Thanks.
I had them produced for me by Metalsome Art in Rochester NY. They are basically made the same way that they make custom belt buckles. I want to say this was a nickel plate that was acid etched, then powdercoated black, and finally polished to remove the powder from the surfaces that had been etched lower. I just gave them a JPEG and $100 or something and they mailed me a few badges back a couple weeks later. I had to make my own tool to put the curvature on them. I used my lathe to turn a round piece a little bit smaller than the head tube diameter, and I used a holesaw on my mill to create a round channel in a block of aluminum. I then pressed the head badge into the round shape using the two new pieces between the jaws of my milling vise. If I could do it over again I would have had the badges designed with screw holes and I would have screwed the badge on. I ended up using two sided foam tape and it looks good front on, but kinda crappy from the sides and top and bottom. The foam tape is so thick and it looks cheesy. I hope this helps!
Hello 👋 I am new to frame building, and I have a question, please help me out, I want to use straight chainstays, but I am not sure if it would fit a 30 tire. Plus I want to use a through axle wheel, 142mm wide inside, the Question; what kind of bb you’ve got there? what’s the angle at the chain stay 7 degrees or 8? My drawings show that I might get away with it using a regular 7 degree at chain stay bb, but I am not quite sure if my drawings are accurate enough by , I am also concerned with the crankset hitting the chain stays (172.5 46-34). My drawings show there is about 3cm of clearance around tire and crank arms but again I might be wrong. Better ask a pro right? Thanks 😊
Cobra Kai, never die!
Awesome build! Any idea how much it weighs?
Your guess is probably as good as mine. 20-22lb? It's mostly a function of the parts on it.
Cobra Frames thanks! And again awesome build!
Fuckn sick indeed. Good job
Hotness.
Hotness indeed!
What a beautiful machine - 2:20, #MissonAccomplished
Joe just want to ask again, is having a 27inch rear and a 700c front to fixie would be a good idea?
They’re really close in diameter. For a cheap fixie build it’s probably not a big deal. If you’re going to the trouble of building it up any way you want don’t mess with 27” rims - that standard has been dead for 30 years and you’ll have terrible options for tires and rims etc.
Cobra Frames tnx a lot again Joe, nice video as always
Do you also sell frames or just the tools ?
Right now I just sell the tools.
Ok I have never owned a nice bike ...but here's a crazy idea to have frame etched. With ryson epoxy to create a reflective frame ?
What if you powder coated black light paint with black leds in frame ? ...o.0
Like powder coat underneath of forks white black light and add leds . or pin strip light up with black light on frame .
Oh oh bio pace right first canndale bike had bio pace
Oh bro that is a nice set up ..I like the single front sprocket to 11 or 12 in the back
Ssir can i ask if it is worth it to replace the head tube of my bike So that i could use 1 1/8 forks?
Only if it’s worth it to you. If the bike is really special to you maybe it would be worth it, but otherwise just trade up to the kind of bike you want. It’s a pretty complicated project from a fabrication standpoint. Plus re-painting it.
@@cobraframebuilding thanks for the response. Well, I think I'll just replace the headtube. I dont have enough money to buy new ones. And this bike serves as my transportation from my house to school :)
Is it safe if it is stick weld? Or arch weld?
Absolute Black chainrings are manufactured in Poland ;)
👌🤙
you are american right? bild a bike up with cane creek cranks, paul klamper brakes, chris king, phil wood or white industries hubs and some fancy whiskey rims. Like rodeolab or squid bikes does americans love than. Props for the thomson parts and enve fork that's a good start. For sure some shop can lend you some fancy parts just for a photo.
I took up shoe making. My shoes aren't killer beautiful but they fit better than any factory shoe.
