  • Realistically, how much time do I spend bookkeeping? What is the difference in time commitment from part-time bookkeeping to full-time bookkeeping? Do you have to work 40 hours a week to make a good living? I go through my week as a bookkeeper and how much time I spend on each of my clients.

Very nice approach you have to bookkeeping. As someone who likes numbers, science and is very inquisitive by nature. I identify with many of the themes you hit on in your channel.

I have a nonprofit and I keep the books. I don’t consider myself a bookkeeper because I don’t really know exactly what a bookkeeper does that’s different from what I do. But I’m fascinated by bookkeeping and I’m learning a lot the more I do it and this year I just filed my 990 myself, I had been paying somebody to do that in the past, but I learned I can do it for free so I thought why not? Anyway. Since I’m not really bookkeeper or an accountant I spend about an 20 minutes every morning going through the books making sure the transactions in the bank registers match my accounting software. I actually use an accounting software and another parallel set of books just because I don’t trust myself fully yet so I maintain everything in two places and there’s more of a reason why I do this, that second set of books has a different set of categories that help me manage the nonprofit. Whereas the main set of books is just the books that I use for all of the business formalities. I sometimes wonder why I can’t do all this with one set of books and if I will ever be able to go to one set of books that would save me a lot of time, but so far they have two very distinct purposes and so I don’t see a way out yet, but it would be fun to chat with another bookkeeper insights because I’m sure what I’m doing is no different than what other nonprofits need to do. So, my big take away from doing the 990 myself this year is that I realized that the categories in my primary books don’t really help me a whole lot with the categories in the 990. I end up having to create an index of the P&L categories for the 990 and new totals. It’s not a big deal, but it makes me wonder if I should update the categories in my primary books. The thing is, when I set up the initial bookkeeping software I selected the nonprofit settings and it gave me all of these categories to use, but none of them align with the 990 on the expense side. On the income side, almost all of them align with the 990. So I’m a little bit confused by that and I wonder if you were experiences the same and what you do to manage it.

Hi Rachel. Any update on the Everything Bookkeeping Course that you have mentioned in some past videos? If this course isn't available, what course do you recommenet for learning bookkeeping in the easiest and most efficient way. Thank you so much for any guidance you can provide :)

Quick question, you mentioned that you would not recommend being a stay at home mom and bookkeeping and I would like to know why.
One of the reasons I want to start a bookkeeping business is that right now we cannot afford daily daycare and I will be giving birth in November.
I would have to make a ton more money than I do now in order to pay for daycare or I would need to find a way to work from home. Right now that is where I am going because it seems unrealistic to think I can make that much extra money just to pay for daycare. It makes more sense if I can just stay home and work from there so I just wanted to know why you think it’s not the best idea.
Thanks very much! I think I will go back and look at your starting videos.

As a mum, I think it's possible but very challenging especially when you're first starting out. Getting your own business up and running requires a LOT of time and energy that you most likely won't have with a newborn.

Working from home is difficult with a child there demanding your attention. I know for me I would not have been able to do it, but I know that plenty of moms make it happen.
