  • Richard is almost 60 and has been homeless for 6 years. He became homeless due to his marriage falling apart which led to depression and alcoholism. His condition meant he was unable to work. Richards sense of humour is heart warming to see. In a different reality Richard could well have been a manager in a large company training other people. Richards story is the story of many others that are homeless just like him. We wanted to do something nice for Richard and decided to make a Part 2 to his journey with us. To be continued...

    Homelessness is a growing issue for the UK with more than 300,000 people living on the streets. Many of these people don't even make it onto the official figures.
    The Unseen is an organisation we set up to give Homeless people a platform to have their stories and their struggles heard. We also want everyday people to have an opportunity to understand what leads a person into being Homeless. We at the The Unseen believe that everybody has a responsibility to help the unfortunate.
    We want employers and regular people to support the homeless towards getting back into work and off the streets.
    We hope their stories can touch the hearts of many.
    Living on the street is no way to live.

    Richard used to sleep where I lived. I stopped seeing him around jan feb time and I’ve missed him ever since. I used to speak to him and he’s such a lovely man. He always made me laugh when we spoke, once I asked him if he wanted anything from the shop and he said “anything but tuna” I misheard him and bought him 2 tuna sandwiches. He wouldn’t stop teasing me about it but he is one of the most genuine men I’ve met. I hope to see him again some day, even though I’ve moved location myself now. If it’s possible to show him this comment I hope you can, he’s a man I’ll hold close to my heart for the rest of my life

    I love the interviewer. He ask good questions with interest and compassion. My heart is so heavy listening to the homeless circumstance. Knowing that anyone can be in the same situation no matter how good they feel they have it now. We never know where life will take us. It is only by God's grace and mercy least any man should boast.

    A person who is an alcoholic needs more than housing to get off the streets. They need rehab, counselling and support groups. Without the ongoing support they just end up lying on their bed drinking all day cos of depression and isolation. They may also return to the streets cos of the feelings of hopelesness and loneliness.

    people need to realize that, just because their life has been on track so far, they could become homeless in the future like this guy

    • @WorthlessWinner
      @WorthlessWinner Před 3 lety

      @Dizzy D - while most people are 2 pay slips away from not being able to pay the rent, i'm not sure most people would be homeless (in the 'street homeless' sense) in that situation. A lot of people have relatives or friends they could live with, until they get back on their feet. A big commonality i see with homeless people is that they generally don't have that social support network (because they grew up in foster care for example or have had recent family breakdown) so when hard times other people would have help weathering hit and they lose 2 paychecks, they can't get through them.

    • @WorthlessWinner
      @WorthlessWinner Před 3 lety

      @Dizzy D - I know what you're saying is often true, but I also know families exist that would prevent relatives becoming homeless (for example, one of my uncles let my other uncle stay with him for a few years when he was out of work due to his alcoholism which would probably have led to him being homeless otherwise).
      I wonder what the proportion of these families are, and how big a factor having a supportive family is in avoiding homelessness? I know growing up in foster care is a big risk factor

      There's poverty alleviation program in China to help lift people out of extreme poverty. Homeless people should be first on the list to receive helps from the government.
      In fact his son also could be sued in court and punishable by law for not taking care of his father.
      If he's living in China, he would be well taken care of by his relatives and the government.
