hi you said that a person with HbH couldnt have 2 children, but i know a family that mum has HbH and they have 3 children. either one of the parents could have had HbH and the other a trait on the cis in that case as hbodies are not always seen on a blood film

the grand parents should have a-/aa and aa/-- to have a son with HbH (--/a-) and a daughter with aa/-- (cis mutation)

So my question is If both parents have a-/a- than the child will only have a-/a-? Is it possible to find out exactly if either the parents have a-/a- or aa/- .

It sucks that we must *assume* that the mother and father of the HF baby did not have HbH disease in order to work this out. I guess since the question deliberately told us that the brother had HbH disease, that the question would have too included others who had the disease if it were the case. Still, tricky.

Why do the parents have to be trait and not HbH disease?
