    This song was cut from the show and replaced by Burn. You really would be crazy about a lot of the music. These ladies were all Elizas from touring companies and replacements from Broadway. There were no live performances of this in the show because the choice was made to make Eliza more reserved, which evidently was a bit more historically accurate

    In Greek mythology, Icarus (/ˈɪkərəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἴκαρος, romanized: Íkaros, pronounced [ǐːkaros]) was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Icarus and Daedalus attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus got cocky and flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he fell.

    Great analysis! Hamilton is a great show...it manages to bridge the gap between theatre diehards and a younger audience. And teaches some about American History that might not have shown interest in the past. I would LOVE for you to analyze "Satisfied" from Hamilton. Try to get the actual performance filmed for Disney+ and performed by Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler(she won the Tony Award for Best Actress for it). It's BRILLIANT!!

    Hi Jess! This is such a great song to react to with so many moving parts, although, I wish they had done it live, too. Lol. I'm always in awe of how much you can Hear in the music!
    This is the first version of the song "Burn" that Eliza sings when she finds out Hamilton has cheated on her (this version is not in the musical). All the ladies singing have played the role on various stages. Hamilton isn't my favourite musical by far, but it's fast moving and entertaining. I definitely recommend watching it at least once, if only for pop culture references. 😂
    (The line about Icarus is comparing Hamilton to him. It refers to Daedalus and his son Icarus in Greek mythology. Daedalus built giant wings out of wax and feathers so he and Icarus could escape from Crete and he warned his son not to fly too close to the sun or the wax would melt and he would die. Icarus flew too high anyway and fell out of the sky into the ocean and drowned).
    I absolutely love when you analyse Broadway! Maybe we could get a Broadway series if enough of us ask for it? Lol

    • @jessicasopranonotes
      @jessicasopranonotes  Před 2 lety +28

      Thank you for the clarification, Rivkah! I had no idea this is portrayed by one character - I thought they were each their own. But very cool idea!
      What a sad story about Icarus! So much symbolism too!
      And yes, I'm getting more and more into Broadway. There is soo much material I have yet to see and I am always willing to learn more about the genre. 💛

    The best number by a female singer in Hamilton is Satisfied but it is best viewed with the song before it called Helpless. The scene is Hamilton meeting Eliza and Angelica Schuyler. Helpless is from the point of view of Eliza who tells Angelica she's in love and runs through Eliza and Hamilton's marriage. Then time literally rewinds, the stage revolves backward, dancers do reverse choreography and the scene is told from the point of view of Angelica with the song Satisfied. It is some of the most brilliant staging and singing I've seen. I think you will be blown away by Rene Elise Goldsberry's performance and Philippa Sou is wonderful as well.

You are literally in the industry, and this show has had such an impact in musical theater, I am surprised that you haven’t taken the time to watch it. Because it is such a great story, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice by watching a random selection from the show without having context. I would love to see your reaction to the show in its entirety, even if posted as individual videos.

    The music in Hamilton is amazing. It’s so so so deep. The contributions from all the different people involved add up to brilliance. This is like Shakespeare. It will be studied for generations. The conclusion of the first Act, “Non-Stop” is like opera.
    Please, please, please watch it.

    So many comments and yet no one gave you the actual context! Hamilton's entire characterization is built around creating a legacy for himself. He's ambitious with a high IQ and alternates between scheming and impulsiveness. He first meets Angelica Schuyler and while she and Hamilton are an intellectual match, he's poor and from an unknown family - she has to marry up and he's not it. She matchmakes and sets him up with her sister Eliza. After the Revolutionary War, he is Secretary of the Treasury and rivals with Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. Angelica has married and exchanges subtle flirtations with Hamilton from afar - it's something of an open secret they have feelings for each other. Eliza and their children are living with Eliza's father in upstate NY. Hamilton is seduced by a third woman, Maria Reynolds, whose husband is aware of the affair and blackmails Hamilton. Jefferson finds the blackmail payments in Hamilton's financial records and accuses him of embezzlement, which as Secretary of the Treasury, would ruin him. He decides to go public about the affair before Jefferson can out him.
    Burn, the song that inspired this, is Eliza's reaction to finding out about the affair and the humiliation of it going public. The Icarus reference is about a Greek myth of a young man who builds himself wings and arrogantly flies too high, with the sun causing his wings to melt and plummet him to his death. This song intersperses lines and musical themes from Burn along with scrapped lyrics from an angrier version of the song. The anger didn't fit where Lin Manuel wanted the emotional punch to sit at this point in the show. Each of the verses is directly pointed at his character traits that led him to break her heart.

    • @ajonteampanalo
      @ajonteampanalo Před 2 lety +1

      Excellent overview! I would also add that Burn / First Burn is a nod to the real life fact that there were no letters to view between Eliza and Hamilton from this period leading some scholars to posit the theory that Eliza (or someone in her family) didn’t want to tarnish Hamilton’s reputation with all the ugly details / personal letters between this man and his wife re: his affair. Lin-Manuel adds his own theory that ELIZA burned them to have agency/ power over the narrative “I’m burning the letters that might have redeemed you” “I’m erasing myself from the narrative, let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart” …. “The world has no place in our bed, they don’t get to know what I said”
      ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Search for Jackie Evancho vocalise she does the same I would also be curious if you have heard of Jackie or reacted to anything that she has done? She started as a second place AGT contestant when she was 10, followed by two PBS specials that you would hopefully be a fantastic reaction. If you search for Jackie Evancho dream with me in concert you will find a list of videos from the concert that she has published on her page. Don't overanalyze the story and context of the song, because the song is cut out of the musical, this studio version would be the only official version we're gonna get because its actually not canon to the story and this video is sort of just given out as a gift to the fans due to the success of the musical, other cut songs that never made it into the musical are also released, but again, they are not canon to the story not unless you're a die-hard Hamilton fan who loves doing a deep dive into the story. Icarus is based off a greek mythology, the boy who flew too close to the sun, it is meant to be an analogy, not someone part of the story 😆

    Icarus isn't a character in Hamilton, but a figure from Greek mythology. He created wax wings to fly, but flew too close to the sun; the wax melted and he fell to his death. It's a metaphor.
