2023 Frontier League, huge shock for me was how strict they were with how relief pitchers warm up. You must stretch and throw while your team takes pregame bp (2-3 hours before game start, 3-4 hours before a reliever might enter game), not allowed to throw right before game. Also very strict with everyone in the bullpen during the game not picking up a ball and tossing or “looking too active” trying to get/stay loose dynamically during the game unless explicitly told by coach to start getting hot (1/2 - 1 inning heads up before going in game). Overly concerned with “looking professional” (?) than letting guys try to get some blood flowing and hit a partner in the chest a few times before having to throw to a catcher in down position
when it’s 40 degrees out in these northeastern states early season
I understand not being a slave to your routine is important and you need to be adaptable, but this was just mind blowing, that their idea of performing like a professional meant having to sit on your ass for 3 hours then try to warm up and lock with 1.0 innings of heads-up. Rob, I would love to hear your experience dealing with this, as someone who wasn’t brand new to the scene but already had some prior pro experience under their belt. Was the return to organized ball tough, when you were used to being totally in control of your pace of warmup/throwing session during your solo content creation times, where you could spend as much time as you wanted doing whatever you wanted before facing a live hitter/throwing to your dad/ect.?

Believe it or not my experience is that’s the reality for every level all the way up to the MLB. Guys don’t usually ever throw except for that window before or during BP. Some places of course have different rules but most people do band work/plyo ball throwing etc. besides actually throwing a baseball to get loose. Sometimes that can get perceived by fans, coaches, players, your starting pitcher that you’re warming up to come in and can affect mentality. That’s why plyos are an effective tool to warm up. Like I said every place is different but a lot of places I’ve played that’s pretty standard.

@@SidearmSpecialist Coming from a college background, I was used to both teams take pregame bp, then having the last 45-60 minutes pregame to get loose and throw right up until game start. Then being able to chill in the bullpen and get up and stretch or toss with a buddy every few innings to be ready to go when needed. Big shock to me to learn the pro guys frown upon that-I felt like it was impossible for me to get loose fast enough, let alone do everything I possibly could to give myself the best chance of success. Feels like years of learning to accept the discipline and tedious work that goes into being the best version of yourself that you can be was all for nothing, like I’m being forced to be lazy
