    Changed my mind; spent some time on the message boards and the limitations concerning song mode can be worked around easily enough with outboard effects, sampling as opposed to internal tone generator and long sustain between patterns (I listened to the in-unit demos for reference) and as long as the midi note stops before pattern switch, everything should be ok since I'll use it primarily for drums, anyway. The main reason I bought it is that I can use different time signatures currently unavailable on most, if not all 'next gen' stand alone units.
    That said, I'll have to pick up the internal RAM expansion card for under $20 and will have to re-watch your instructive and easily understood tutorial series while I wait for minimally used unit to arrive.
    Don't know if you care or not, just thought I'd let you know as you were generous enough to respond back as quickly as you did previously.
    -Cheers!

      That's awesome, glad to hear you're giving it a shot! I swear by mine, but I also feel that I'm in the minority of electronic musicians that feel that limitations and their workarounds can benefit creativity. The MC-909's benefits outweigh the shortcomings for me, but I know that others may have varying opinions on that. Just wanted to be clear that song mode is definitely not it's strong point and will need some extra attention to get useful results, within limits.

      @@16Steps: As long as there's no glitches between pattern transitions in song mode (sustained notes and internal effects re-sets not withstanding), I think I'll be fine; worst case scenario, I sell it for maybe a hundred bucks less than paid and call it a day.
      To your point, working around certain model-specific limitations is a form of creativity in itself, if you ask me, quite beyond the fact that a lot of these perfectionists only work in 2s and 4s, so one has to wonder about their pretensions on any score, all things considered, and I say that as a total snob myself, but I can count between 5, 7, 9, 11 or 13 (that's a joke, by the way).
      Anyway, interesting days ahead with politics as much as anticipated music equipment, to be sure.
      Thanx again!

    Check it out I have a 909 right in front of me, tryin to sample in, a signal is correct, but in the end it shows me NO sample recorded and stores that “sample” as 1 kb MONO sample. I have a 512 mb memory inside so memory is not a problem

    What would you say the MC909s greatest strengths are? What do you find it most useful for in your studio or for songwriting/producing?

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  Pƙed 3 lety

      Strengths are that it's very flexible, it's has good synth, sampler, effects, controls, sequencer. In the past I've used it as a sequencer for my entire studio, but these days it mainly does pad and sampler duty.

      @@16Steps Great tutorial!! How would you say it is as a sampler, perhaps even compared to other roland 90s rack samplers? I love the MC505, and thought the 909 with don solaris drum lib would be a cool starting point for solid oldschool drum samples. Would you recommend it over a rack sampler or MPC?

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@AnalogFlava I like it as a sampler, it's not really a "character" sampler, but the fx and flexibility with the patches are really useful. I think it is a good match with the mpc, but maybe matter of preference. I also like the MPC 2000XL, 1000 etc. The MC-909 has very similar architecture to the Roland S series, but would say that sound quality is not the same league as like an S-770, but the workflow is more fun and flexible to use. I have an S-760 and an Akai S950 to use for sonic character, but the MC is easier to work with, and is useful for time and measure type phrase sampling (think loops) and is easier to back up and use with a computer to manage saving of sample patches etc.

      @AnalogFlava Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@16Steps thanks mate, appreciate it. So i have the s760 too but havent gotten around to use it yet, due to it being with disks and all. I bought it for the character and sonic qualities as you say, but thought that the mc909 would be more hands on just as the mc505 is. Whst ive found with the grooveboxes though is that, while creating cool ideas and get domething unique going fast, it takes longer to do a full track because, well, sequencing etc. is more cumbersome :) still, I think I might get one soon!

  • @alsara2k
    @alsara2k Pƙed 2 lety

    Hey man, i just wanted to ask you so that i know for sure before buying one. Can you use a sample as a regular tone/waveform and have the AMP/LFO etc Params applied to it? Or is the sample restricted to the basic edit functions as illustrated in the sample edit section in the manual. Thanks man.

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Yes, you use the sample as the tone, it will show up in the waveform list, and then you can use filter/lfo/env etc on those. I think the part you are referring to is the destructive editing of a sample, which while (I guess) is useful, is separate from using the samples as tones.

    Hi,
    Im wondering if you could help me please.
    Ive created samples and saved them as a sample onto the machine and my memory card but when I go into the patch/sample section to choose them there looks like there is nothing saved. I cannot recall my saved samples to use in a track Im creating its like they don't exist. However when I go back into the sampling section they are all there. Its like the machine doesn't recognize them outside of the sampling part. Any ideas? Im using operating system version 1.20 and up until a week ago I had no issues then all of a sudden I just cannot load the samples up anymore.
    Anyway, thanks for your tutorials they have been handy.
    Cheers

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  Pƙed 3 lety

      I can't recall if there was a bug on 1.20 that explains this. Are you able to use the "Create Patch" function from the sampling menu? The most common issue is not saving the sample before saving the patch, but it sounds like you have this sorted. Make sure the system setting for loading samples on startup is ticked. If it continues to be an issue, you might look at backing everything up and doing a factory reset, if it then still persists, maybe look at RAM or different card. Keep me posted!

    • @simul808
      @simul808 Pƙed 3 lety

      @@16Steps really appreciate your response. Since I posted I've bought a 32mb smart media card and installed version 1.23 (quite a nailbiting moment for fear of bricking it completely) and done a factory reset. The problem still persists. I have the extra ram installed but that was the first thing I removed when I first got the problem. I havent tried having the "load samples from startup" ticked though so thats my next goto thing.
      My son (who's a bit of a pc nerd boffin) is convinced its a software bug and not hardware issue. I dunno, ill persist and keep you updated.
      Like I said, really appreciate the response as finding any info on the internet for the 909 is tough.

      @@simul808 Are these samples you're creating via the sampling function on the machine or are these samples that you are importing via USB? I ask because you will have to import the samples in a different manner, and might lead lo missing samples. to check the sample load function, press the Menu button, then select. System > Sampling. On that page, there should be an option for Sample Default Load, this should be set to ON. Please keep me updated! Would love to help you get this solved!

I did exactly what you said, now I can see the sample file in the tmp folder in the MC 909, so I was in the sampling section, created a patch, assigned the patch, I even could hear the sample when I press the key pads, but I can't see them in the library (user or card, I tried both). When I'm off of the sampling section I just lost everything, seems like I hadn't create a patch at all. I read the manual and I'm doing whats is saying there for creating a patch, but I should missing something... sorry to bother you with all that, but you so far are the person in internet accessible who knows better about this machine. @@marcelodiana82 make sure you save the sample. You will need to save both the sample and the patch. I would recommend saving the sample as soon as you import it. It should give you a selection of places to store the sample (User or Card). If it's not saving to either of those locations, you may have other issues. So to clarify - I would try to import the sample, then save it. Create the patch from the saved sample..
