    It's kinda crazy how 20 year old grooveboxes were so much more capable. I don't get why the market went towards removing features and capacity.

    • @rorz999
      @rorz999 Před 2 lety +11

      If I had to guess, it's because PCs and DAWs took over for a while. So when grooveboxes were reintroduced, designers/manufacturers made them to be limited pieces you use in a studio setup (where the PC is the centrepiece), rather than something to make full tracks with (which they intended for the 90s and early 2000s grooveboxes, even if very few actually used them that way).
      It's the only explanation I can come up with for so many modern grooveboxes not having song mode, having bizarre limitations (e.g. mono sampling, tiny memory) and so on. I don't mind too much if there's a good 'render stems' function, but I do prefer to work almost entirely outside the box where possible (except for mixing and mastering)

      Less features means less money spent on development and more profit. Elektron does it correctly - make it as minimal as possible (aka gimped compared to these classics), make it shiny af and market it cleverly and people will buy it.

      @@ramonkey2939 Software As A Service (SAAS) did not start with Apple nor will it end with them. It is here to stay when users keep on demanding new features or new users seeking access to legacy content. That aside I agree with your sentiment that the companies that do this shit (like modern roland zenology) are absolutely out of their minds and losing loyal customers.

    Great Infotorial Tubedigga, now an MPC user, I just started using my MC909 again after storage for a few years just last week as an outpost workstation, and find most of the edit possibilities amazing for sketching out ideas or just mucking around. If only the workflow would be a bit more simpler, 5-6 Buttons to save a Pattern, hidden UNDO function, and the slightly complex sample management which had me often scratching my head, getting the right, final edited, truncated sample to its designated patch and saving it properly. I use to love mangling samples on the ensoniqs eps16s & ASRs. It drove me mad how confusing this could be on the MC909. The Chord & Arps edit is superb though, as are the FX, I actually like the Sequencer editor and its possibilities.
    The biggest dealbreaker was Roland dropping the support for this Machine so early. I think this is where Roland began their policy of abandoning relative, useful new machines and giving them the super short shelf life, all the way up to Aira and beyond. I bet, they could of squeezed some great updates into this Machine if they wanted to. Including: Realtime Live Recording! I still don't get how they fuc*#% that up so bad, (knowing?) exactly what the masses where seeking at the time. What a shame. Resurrect the Petition!!! This slightly ugly box could have become the ultimate king of Groove Boxes. If anyone needs spare knobs or bits, drop a line, I have a second MC909 with trashed Audio-digital board which I never managed to revive, but don't ask for the white Softpads, their shot ;-)

    RPS...yaaaaaaa. Miss that on the 707. There were a lot of frustrating problems with this box. But the machine was a blast to program. The 707 is superior in many ways but the 909 has some great capabilities that are missing in the 707. I’m glad Roland finally updated the 707 with the phonograph efx that the 909 has. I use often for saturation and to add some age to my sounds. I do miss the boost architecture types of the synth engine found in Roland synths of the 90s. I continue to use the 909 backpack case for my 707. Best case ever!

    I loved this video especially because there's not many videos going even a bit into the machine itself. Lovely sounds, amazing capabilities but the steepness of the workflow is kinda making me use my MC 909 as an instrument rather than a production station as it was intended. Can't wait for more of your material on this piece of gear!

    Underground musicians from the darker genres of electronic music are using this equipment in droves. Very good for EBM, Darkwave, Industrial. There are also a number of synthwave musicians who have realized the power of the digital synthesizer of these machines. In the last 5 years I've seen musicians abandoning notebooks with Daws and returning to grooveboxes.

    Great video! I prefer the MC-505 over the 909 but I must admit that's actually a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The 505 is a lot more limited without the sampling option but for some reason I like its lower resolution JV sound engine better than the cleaner and more hifi XV sound in the 909. But also I never used the sampler in the 909 that much which seems to be its real strength. What kind of setting do you use for the pads? Do you even use them at all or do you control the 909 with a MIDI keyboard?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  Před 2 lety +5

      The opposite for me, the 909 sequencer is really intuitive once you get the workflow. I found the 707 a bit claustrophobic and couldn’t expand short patterns to anything more elaborate. The sample editing was also poorly implemented. Great synth engine though 👍

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift Před 2 lety +3

      It depends on what you're looking for in a sequencer. An important aspect for me is high maximum resolution and flexibility. I want to be able to start programming notes in a 16ths grid and switch to other scales like triplet grids and back at any time without affecting what I have already written, maybe insert short triplets just for the length of an eights note, which is how some real drummers would play all the time, and go back to sixteenths again. I want the option to switch to a high resolution scale at any point in the sequence and insert a number of fast notes with a long decay time to mimick the strumming effect of a guitar for example. I hate the fact many companies started getting rid of this functionality in their new machines. Yes, having these options can make things confusing but why not offering an easy mode and a more extensive one for the sequencer as well like they did for editing the sound? It doesn't make sense to me that I can build sequences in the MC-505 from 1998 in a way the MC-707 simply doesn't allow me to.

    I did 7 white label EP's with the MC-909 as the heart of my studio between 2003-2005 while living in England. Still the best groovebox Roland has ever made IMHO. It still had a few bugs after the latest OS update and Roland abandoned its' development. Sold mine and replaced it with an MPC 2500 in frustration with Roland and I haven't bought another Roland product since.
    I still miss the "Roland" sound from time to time and often miss this product. It was maybe 1 or 2 more patches away from total perfection and to this day, I still can't bring myself to forgive Roland for abandoning its' development.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  Před 3 měsíci

      I get it, Roland have this habit of making products that sound great and for the most part function well but there’s always gaps which are very frustrating. Akai, Pioneer DJ and Native Instruments are all guilty of it in one way or another, too eager to roll out the next product and leave the previous one under developed. However I enjoy the challenge of making older gear do things most people don’t make the effort to, as ever there’s a lot to be said for the magic that limitation can evoke.

I don’t mean they are bad, but these videos are just dated and in poor quality, especially when there is so much pottential inside this machine. I cannot imagine there’s such significant loading time between projects of 707, while the pattern switching is just seamless and you can even RPS them inside another project with 909. Obviously, this machine didn’t earn the reputation it deserves.

      The 909 if you are into sampling and synthesis. It’s so quick once you get the workflow. The 707 went out the door because the sampling was too limited, particularly the editing features. Does the 909 use 5v or 3.3v smart media cards?
    I got the MC-505 but I did not find a suitable card for less than ~100 Euros, I don't plan to pay that, it's a real bummer.
    A random complaint I have about the 505 is that output assignments are per pattern but I would love to be able to globally assign them per track so I don't have to manually do it for every pattern and wait 10 seconds when saving the pattern each time. Also, you need to save the sounds separately from the patterns and that also takes 10 seconds per save (does not sound like alot on it's own but it sums up and gets annoying quickly)

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  Před 2 lety

      I’ve no idea about smart media voltage, I’ve always assumed they were just all the same.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift Před 2 lety +4

      It's 3,3 V in the MC-909, not the rare 5 V cards.
      About assigning individual outputs in the MC-505 - Maybe there are different ways of doing it (like so many things in the MC-505...) You just press the TEMPO/MIXER button so you can see the changes in the display, then set the part mixer to EFX/OUT, hold down [SHIFT] and move the slider up until you see DIR1 or DIR2 in the display. The part is now assigned to one of these outs, no need to save the pattern at this point, you can tweak and write your patch, write the pattern and save everything when you're done. Yes, the saving process takes a bit of time but I usually don't mind being slowed down a bit when I'm using the MC-505.

      I'd say the RS7000 is probably better because of the way you can interchange patterns/sections and kits etc, at least from what i remember with the RM1X which is essentially the same but without the sampler. I only had an RS7000 for a short time as i didn't like the sampling options. The MC909 is more basic in terms of it just being a standard pattern sequencer. I might be wrong but I remember how you can switch out the sections in the RM1X/RS7000 was great for variations.

I like to be very organised so I can find things later down the line but it was a little tedious. Not difficult but just tedious. Sounded great, effects were also a little limited for my needs. Kind of regret it but not that fussed at the same time. Worth owning just to see its capabilities though. Overall recommended.

    The MC909 has two big disadvantages: it doesn't have the megamix from the mc505 (which is a big disadvantage while playing live) and it is not possible to record while playing (not possible to do live jams). If Roland ever solved those 2 issues it would have been a killer machine. Certainly the built-in compressor is great. We need a company to pick up development of the mc909 where Roland stopped. Maybe Behringer?

    I had a 909 when they released... good tones, but live, in a live set, it was pretty bad... there's no way to make good transitions from one song to another... just like the MC707, there's no way. The patches are from the XV line, I think, they are interesting, but they are already worn by time and she is a ROMPLER. At the very least, the MC707 is a ZEN CORE synth, despite only having 8 tracks (909 had 16) and only 16 clips on each track (that's truly a shame!). Anyway... I gave up on groovebooxes years ago and I've been researching the 707, but I didn't get excited... very few scenes and tracks.

    Nice video. I have the MC-909 and the MC-505 since around 2000s and can admit that the sound of the MC 505 is much, much fatter and less digital and clean then the MC-909. They sound thin and like crap compared to the MC-505. On the MC-505 you have a low-boost potentiometer which really shakes the club!! The MC- 909 doesn´t have a realtime megamix function, which is really bad. The arpeggiopotentiometer (which is a beast for creativity in the MC-505 and you can export them in realtime while playing as midi) is also gone! You can meshup patterns from another track in the 909 but you have to stop the engine completely playing and go to the edit menue and execute a copy... There are a lot more differences between them. You have to make your own sounds in the MC-909 with samples (you can put them as waveforms in the synthengine) because the factorysounds are not representing the soundcapatibilites and qualities of the MC-909. There is also a editor for both and in case of the MC-909 it opens up some additional features. For studio use the MC-909 is a great addition and masterstation (for Midi aswell) and for creating/exporting ideas to AbletonLive or another DAW great but for livegigs with a fat and warm sound, I always prefer the MC-505. There is also another issue with the MC-909. You have to be careful on the sides of this beast because the device will give you a little shock if you are sweaty!!! It is very noticible on the sides, where no painting protects your skin from the bare metalcasing! The device isn´t earthed somehow and sometimes it hurt´s me during jamming with the MC-909 and I am not the only one who experienced it (google it). Roland throwed out some updates for the MC-909 but they are bugged and I am very disapointed from Roland why they never got rid of those issues and gave us more updates and functions. If you have questions you can reach out to me, brgds

    • @Analoque444
      @Analoque444 Před 2 lety

      @@AnalogFlava Depends on the price, I do recommend it but as an sampler it is outdated and slow, the cheapest laptop is way faster. If you gonna build your own sounds and make sounddesign its a different thing because the MC-909 engine is very deep and capaple of complex sounds - don´t judge the factory presest, build your own and you will see. For an MC-505 user I do recommend it - you gonna have the best of both worlds and you will love it. Check out the pads and buttons, especially the pads gonna wreck after a while and most MC-909 have this issue today. Check also out if the device changes values randomly (the ADSR/Mixer-Fader or others sends random values due to dust in the faders and you have to pull and push them around 100 times to get them conductive again - check if a preset changes itself magicaly to * wich indicates that something has changed- then you go in patch edit menue to see which slider or value moves or use the editor or Midimonitor to see which CC is changing). But the pads are crap and gave up after 6 months of use and have to be replaced or cleaned. ** I forgot to mention that the mastering-section of the MC-909 is quite unique in sound and pressure - it´s a real secret weapon!! In the past I had some guys who could master it on Avalon or 1178 real analog but choosed instead to push all tracks through the mastering section of the MC-909, it´s different and somehow special and for me it´s one of the most overlooked feature in this beast. In my opinion you need a very big studio with top notch gear and a army of skilled studio guys to match the same sound^^ The device is capaple of much more than the most of us imagine and even Roland don´t know this. So think about it.

      I like the gritty and punchy sound of the MC-303, especially for drums, it has a character on its own. When you've learned how to use the effects, you know how to make it sound good. You can have a 909 / 707 / 505 and 303 without any serious overlap between any of them, they are all great and have their individual strengths in functionality and sound character.

    I had it twice and NEVER liked the sound of it. It sounds like a cheap 8 bit computer. It sounds like a very small speaker. I love all the possibilities, is AMAZING! but the sound quality is BAD! Sounds like a Boss DR 550. The stereo effects sound like a mono reverb. It lacks dynamic and width. And the reason is.... they put so many digital functions that the processor can not deliver, the bandwidth is miserable. Is like getting a Lamborghini that can only go straight... no way to turn, the wheels are fixed.
    Just listen to it. Sounds cheap, no low end at all, just a very cheap midrange. By the way, I am 48 years old and graduated from Audio Engineering back in 1995, I have been around. If you are black and you are going to do hip-hop, this machine will work. If you plan to do electronica or something that sounds good, you will hate it. It will not deliver.

      Every user is different and will coax different results out of it. It’s not the machine. I played live with it a few times and it sounded amazing on a proper system and made plenty of jungle tracks on it. It’s only downfall in my opinion was the slow editing and renaming of samples. And the fx routing was limited also. It’s funny you think it sounded like an 8 bit computer because I loaded a ton of 22 and 11kHz LoFi samples into it to conserve ram and they sounded excellent as well.
