Fujifilm XH2S Firmware 7.00 Update: Did They Finally Fix the Autofocus?

  • In this video, I dive into the latest 7.00 firmware update for the Fujifilm XH2S. This highly anticipated update was supposed to fix the notorious autofocus issue and introduce a new film simulation. But did it really deliver? Join me as I put the new firmware to the test and see if the autofocus has finally been fixed.
Spoiler alert: while there's a slight improvement from the previous 6.0 firmware, the autofocus still doesn't quite measure up to other brands. However, there are some positive changes worth noting. Let's break it all down and see if this update is enough to keep Fujifilm users satisfied.

It's definitely a lot better on bird recognition. When birds in flight fly past background clutter it would alway lose focus and then pulsate back and forwards. Now it's 90% locked on. I might even use it over MF.... pretty happy with that. Hopefully further improvements will come, but this is the best firmware so far for my wildlife uses.

It's still pulsating like crazy though, as I notice the photograph on the wall behind you coming in and out of focus and your face losing it several times.

For sure I notice that too! On the small screen on the xh2s I didn’t see it but now watching back the video I see it! I feel like it is an improvement but still not good! Before this update moving around as much as I did the AF would have lost me completely at least now it’s somewhat keeping up.

The AF settings seem to need some fine-tuning it might is a bit to fast. I'm not a fanboy; I simply want my Fuji to work correctly. I've observed similar issues with Sony cameras when the AF is too sensitive etc just search on YT for "Sony AF pulsing" and you will find alot of videos so do not think this is a Fuji "problem". Firmware 7.0 is an excellent fix, and it appears the cameras can now perform at least 90% of their potential... so for me, this isn't a compelling reason to switch systems-some people are just overreactive. However, I hope Fuji will pay closer attention and dive deeper into their code to enhance it. In my view, if they can improve it to be even better than the initial firmware, people will return and sell their Sonys again lol.

The 28-70 f2 covers almost all of these focal lengths in one lens, of which you can find for 2-2.5k if you look around, I sold the lenses for are 6-700 each pretty much covering the lens. I got 2x 1700 for bodies 100x2 for the cf express cards so far lost no money in the transition, I do have one more r6mkii to buy and will have to put money toward the last lens, 35mm f1.4vcm for a more walk about set up.
weight is also a big problem when holding the camera with the 28-70 but the bag is lighter over all. and a far simpler set up.

AFC single point with eyes tracking. Sensitivity +1 speed 0. This is a talking head video you’re watching and even here the AF is struggling…. If you want to see a full in depth video on firmware 7.0 there is a guy on here who just made a full 26 minute video breaking everything down. His results are similar to mine except he uses way more examples and shows you settings of everything. This is not a user fault I’ve been shooting with fuji since 2018 I know these cameras inside and out. I know what lenses do what. I chose the 18-120 f4 because that is the best AF capable lens for video Fuji makes at the moment and I didn’t want people questioning me on the lens aspect of this issue. The lens was updated and the body was updated.

Even if the box is lagging the autofocus was still keeping up with you and the lens pretty well.
