  • This is a common concern for patients coming in to have surgery. I have received this question several times via my website (www.StevenBradleyMD.com) and my instagram account. In this video I explain our concerns and why patients can't eat before they receive anesthesia.
Do you know anyone preparing to have surgery? Check out this video for some information that may help prevent your surgery from being canceled or postponed.

Nothing to eat after 00:00 makes sense if the surgery takes place in the morning. It does not make sense to use the same "cookie cutter" routine for surgery that takes place early evening (after 17:00) the next day.

I don't mind not eating or drinking before a morning surgery but having to quit eating at midnight for a 3pm surgery is a 17 hour fast compared to an 8 hour fast if you have a 7 am surgery

8 hours before surgery makes sense. Since I have to eat mostly soups and stews, it goes through me rather quickly. However, in my current situation, surgery takes place in the very late afternoon (around 16:30). Approximately 16 hours after the "no food or drink" order. What's up with this nonsense?

Muslims fasting for 18 hours a day: allayu akbar may Allah bring peace.
Yanks having a morning surgery: what? Are you saying I can't have my 3 AM in-between sleep snack? That is preposterous. What about breakfast?

I have surgery today scheduled at 12noon and was told to not eat solid foods after 12 mid night which was last night into this morning, well SUE ME! and PRAY cause I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon and I fell asleep early last night (something like 7pm) I woke up 4am and my stomach was paining so bad I was hungry! Ya hear me! HUNGRY! I tried lawd knows I tried to rebuke my hunger pain…but the devil is busy I tell ya! I very reluctantly made me one of the most juiciest peanut butter sandwiches at 7am this morning….so I say to you if I vomit on this table later I’m hoping to god I don’t, but if I do just want to tell y’all yes I felt it was worth it and I’m going to heaven if I die ❤…hopefully I can provide an update later though😜

😱 Omg! So what happened when you went in that afternoon for surgery? We’re you honest about what you did or did you just go into surgery? I’m shocked girl 😂not a put down by all means. But I’d be to scary to try anything like that

Bruv, it's not the vomiting that's the problem, it's the gastric juices going to your lungs and creating an infection that will kill you that's the problem.

      She died. Lung infection.

Don't do it. Be honest. Better be responsible and follow instruction than risk your life for a peanut butter sandwich.

I think it should depend on what you're eating. Like blueberries leave the stomach in 2 hrs
