The chance of being killed at an amusement park is one in 750 million. You have more chance dying in a car, using a vending machine, even. Just remember, these are attractions for your enjoyment. Yes, things do go wrong on occasion. But that happens with everything. A lot of the time, the ride stops because it realizes that it could be safer, eg. a lap-bar could be tighter. Heck, most theme-parks close in the winter for maintenance, so that the Health & Safety Executive are convinced that the ride is safe. This often includes taking the trains apart and putting them back together. Rides are tested every single morning to make sure they are safe for standard operation.
I heard that at Thope Park, they go through a rigourous 8 hour safety check before opening the park- shows you how bloody careful they are with these things

I queued 3 HOURS for this when it first came out. It broke down three times almost on the hour every hour. Managed to get to the front so it was SO worth it 😍😁
I remember going on that ride for my birthday and took my older sister with me, it took me a whole day to convince her the ride didn't go into a loop as soon as you got on it... And it did 🤣
It was my first time going to Alton towers. Went for my birthday. Going on the smiler was amazing! Though it was thrilling and scintillating, you could genuinely laugh and have fun while doing like one million loops. Truly an amazing ride! I went back in early August 2019. Still as amazing as it was when I first rid it (: Remember, people... WE BELONG TO THE SMILER
Rode this yesterday. Whilst walking back to the entrance to go home, walked past a family, and the dad was singing the theme song. It's designed so well, because it gets into your head, and that's exactly what the theming says it will do. Creepy.
To those people saying they should've waited for the test train to come back: In short they did. Okay, so basically, they don't need to wait until it comes back to the station, as there's no need. The block system automatically checks the ahead blocks to make sure they're empty. They didn't wait for the train to come back as it's illogical and causes a longer wait during a breakdown, which people don't want. Basically, imagine the blocks are like so, with '-' being a block. (Station) - inside section - lift hill - part 1 (crash area) - brake - lift hill 2 and section 2 - brake - - station - If the empty car comes out of the station and is currently on the lift, moving up, and another one is sent, it is perfectly fine as there is a block between the car and the train. Now imagine the empty car has reached the top of the hill, the next one is sent forward, and reaches the top of the lift due to the block brake stopping it, as the empty train has stalled on the track. Now, the engineer reset the ride system and that resulted in the system losing the train on the track, therefore the next train was allowed over, resulting in the crash. Now that you know how these systems work, you realise how illogical it would be with the blocks being there. Rant over
As an American who went to Alton Towers around 4 years ago, I haven't felt safer on a roller coaster. That's a big thing for me, as I have a small body frame compared to most. The coasters we have here make me feel like I have too much room, and that I don't have enough restraint. Regardless, though, I still love riding them. I don't remember if this specific ride was there, or if I don't remember seeing it/not having enough time. From doing a lot of research, I do believe the accident that happened was 100% human error. I'll be back in England in a week, and I'm hoping to return to Alton Towers. I'll also be planning on definitely riding this one. Seems like fun.
Yeah, people don't realise that the UK's safety standard is much much higher than any other place in the world. The smiler is nearly 5 years old now so it probably was not there.
Yeah, the thing about restraints being pulled in extra securely can be an issue for some people because it prevents you from getting airtime as you are practically glued in to your seat.
Ciaran Elliott Probably right, am going there end of July. Will be a shame to miss it as will be my first visit to AT. We will have to see when they find out the root cause and fix it, make it safer and go from there. From what I gather all four injured were sitting in the front row seats, no way their own fault. Hope they recover as best they are able. :) Even if a miracle happens and the ride opens soon then I am still certainly open to riding in the rear seats. I would not be surprised if for the time being the front row seats were off limits, if purely as a safety protocol (though less fun).
Ciaran Elliott it's not closing for good. if every ride that had an accident closed then there would not be a lot of rides. Drenched at Oakwood had an horrible accident a long time ago yet it's still open. rides are very very safe. i've been riding them since i was 4 and i'm 18 now and i've never been in a single accident!!
Kokichi Oma don’t! The ride is charmingly rough but from the back is downright painful! Try to ride from the front if you can (you cannot choose seats though) and lean into inversions with your back straight to reduce pain
I was 11 when i first went on it and I was terrified by the lining up. The music was terrifying, the first inside bit was deafening and the exit was scary AF. But i loved the ride.
This is no joke the best ride at Alton Towers! It lasts for a very decent amount of time. When you are on it you realise that you are smiling the whole way round!
Choni Heaven trust me, I've been on this roller coaster 4 times since the crash and two of them have been front row, the ride is very safe. The crash happened because a member of staff didn't notice that the sensor had gone off to say that the cart before had stalled on the track and they no longer work there and this ride is checked every morning at least 5 times before anyone is allowed on it.
wow your witty arent cha making petty jokes about the smiler it wasnt that bad yeah two girls losg one leg but its better than disneyland in the last 20 years 26 people have been killed at disneyland and nowone has EVER died at alton towers yet alton towers are gettjng hammered and disneyland is still running fine! I can’t believe I did the smiler today, I conquered my fear of this particular ride and I loved it so much it has become my favourite ride in the entire park, and the entirety of the uk, and the world😆🤭 though it is rough it is brilliant😆
Everyone, just think, the smiler crash was a human error, the ride had nothing to do with it, I experienced the smiler crash, I wasn’t on the ride but I was there.. yes, it has scared me, but I have to remember that things like that happen, but every care has been taken to ensure it won’t happen again. So if you’re a bit unsure about going on it, don’t worry! It’s an amazing ride!
proves why u shouldnt be scared if a 10 year old can go on one of the most scariest roller coasters (not because of the crash that was because of a HUMAN ERROR the ride didnt do it its self, it was the operators fault because he probably didnt see that the first carriage had stalled and sent the 2nd before noticing
Went on this last week - scared shitless the first time and was truly smiling and enjoying it by the second turn 😊 real shame for the folk involved in the accident but these things happen anywhere and shouldn't stop you enjoying life, eh? :/
Omg what are people on about. There is 2 immelmans, 3 dive loops, 3 heartline rolls, 3 corkscrews, and more but no vertical loops and heartline rolls are different to corkscrews

It’s not safer than a commercial air flight
Who else is here virtually "riding" roller coasters because we can't right now?
Mee XD! But I’m going to Alton towers on the 4th of July so I’m so excited!

I wouldn't watch the videos they go a lot faster then they look in the videos
Good on you, roller coasters are so much fun and don’t watch videos you will just end up scaring your self, I recommend the wicker man for people who don’t like coasters, it goes fast but no loops, except the line is tremendous
Emma Edwards I was so scared to go on a roller coaster And I went on nemesis inferno at Thorpe park witch goes 50 miles per hour and goes upside down. 4 times and now I love rollercoasters and I’m a kid

Honestly, I’ve been on a ton of coasters, but this is by far, my favorite.
This looks like a little kid drawn on piece of paper and then they turned it into a roller coaster
Tell a 2 yr old to design a big coaster “scribbles on page” Alton towers : yes
God 😆
I queued 3 HOURS for this when it first came out. It broke down three times almost on the hour every hour. Managed to get to the front so it was SO worth it 😍😁
I remember going on that ride for my birthday and took my older sister with me, it took me a whole day to convince her the ride didn't go into a loop as soon as you got on it... And it did 🤣
Its not a loop though... its an inversion but its not a loop so actually you were right xD
Technically it didn’t though because it was actually a corkscrew I think
im going on it on friday. is it bad
@@vinster9095 no it's EXTREMELY fun. Hope you have a lovely time tomorrow! Also the indoor inversion is a heart line roll.
Archman 155 I’ve never been on a loop coaster before and I’m actually scared ahaha
I know this ride is called the Smiler, but I'd be crying as I ride it!
+Barton Fink yeah, I was sad when I found out
Don't be sad. Let the joy in.
We know it's called the Smiler
LOL
No.
I'm 11, and I went on it 4 times, It was amazing
It was my first time going to Alton towers. Went for my birthday. Going on the smiler was amazing! Though it was thrilling and scintillating, you could genuinely laugh and have fun while doing like one million loops. Truly an amazing ride! I went back in early August 2019. Still as amazing as it was when I first rid it (:
Remember, people...
WE BELONG TO THE SMILER
Rode this yesterday. Whilst walking back to the entrance to go home, walked past a family, and the dad was singing the theme song. It's designed so well, because it gets into your head, and that's exactly what the theming says it will do. Creepy.
To those people saying they should've waited for the test train to come back:
In short they did.
(Station) - inside section - lift hill - part 1 (crash area) - brake - lift hill 2 and section 2 - brake - - station -
If the empty car comes out of the station and is currently on the lift, moving up, and another one is sent, it is perfectly fine as there is a block between the car and the train.
Rant over
WOAH you copied and pasted me from somewhere xD I was the one who wrote it lol ;)
Yep, I did, I would've credited you but I couldn't remember your username.
Did you go after May? Because that's the month when the smiler opened
you should try thorpe park as well! i honestly prefer thorpe to alton, it was the fastest rollercoaster in europe!
Wait Americans actually say good things about our rides
I went on this ride yesterday an amazing experience hands down the best ride at Alton towers
I still remember the advert for this ride back in 2013 when I was 7 years old!
I hope it doesn't go for good, I love the smiler and I personally would still ride after the crash
i read on 'the mirror' that 'the ride will be closed for the foreseeable future' according to the manager, sorry bud.
Emma Seymour Doesnt mean forever. Its gonna be closed for the rest of the season tho
If it does reopen they will probably change the name and theming out of respect for those injured.
For all you GP in the comment section, the ride vehicles are called trains, not cars or carriages.
Yes, always have to correct my mom or dad on that
Hey we try our best. I used to call them cars too.
hijhiysonikku Same, still kinda struggle with that these days, but not much
I could be wrong, but isn't the whole vehicle called a train and the individual segments of the train are called cars?
@@GameGoodness321 Yes Yes Yes
My friends won't go near the Smiler after the accident, but I'm stood there like
.__.
So what if I die? THIS RIDE IS SO AMAZINGGG
Yeaaaaa...
Same here!
@Darren Gregg ?
@Darren Gregg ohh 😂 my bad
Ay bro, your more likely to die 12 times while driving to the park than you are on any of the rides, assuming you live about 1hr away
I'm late but
Tell them that they are millions of times more likely to die on their journey to the theme park than get remotely hurt going on this ride
The ride isn’t even that bad when your on it. The worst part is the vertical climb when your on the back row. (Been there , done that)
James Boyle 6 exactly
Right. If I ever go there, I'm sitting in the back row
Kokichi Oma don’t! The ride is charmingly rough but from the back is downright painful! Try to ride from the front if you can (you cannot choose seats though) and lean into inversions with your back straight to reduce pain
Being at the back was the best part, apart from being near blinded by all the water dripping off the cars and into your eyes 😂
You really must love Kärnan ;D it has the same Lift but 70m tall, falling into a 60m vertical drop
Couldn’t stop laughing when I went on this. One of the best rides!
This ride puts a... _smile_... on people's faces.
stop, please
This coaster is amazing, I go on it every year.
Imagine if it had a different theme?🤔

@@elpendejo2123 Of course it's still open! Theres being much worse things happen on rollercoasters, and they still stayed open.
I was there today. Bro... The only one I was scared to ride was the Nemesis. The rest I was cool with...
The lining up for this roller coaster is better then the actual ride😂 ngl
I was 11 when i first went on it and I was terrified by the lining up. The music was terrifying, the first inside bit was deafening and the exit was scary AF. But i loved the ride.
I love hearing the roaring sounds it makes!
This is no joke the best ride at Alton Towers! It lasts for a very decent amount of time. When you are on it you realise that you are smiling the whole way round!
Hiya when I'm commenting this it will be a new generation in 1 hour happy 2020s
You mean decade. A generation is when one life ends and another begins. Normally referring to a child offspring.
I usually love roller coasters but this really frightened me!
@@jenny1992mcfc I don't think he was talking about the crash but ok
Jenny MCFC dude, you can also be afraid of a rollercoaster if it never crashed, he may think its too high, or he cant handle inversions...
This was my first upside down ride ever.

If you understand what restraints are then you should realize that a scenario like that happening is a flat 0%, has never happened, will never happen.
This is such an amazing ride, I got on it 2 times yesterday. It's greattt

proves why u shouldnt be scared if a 10 year old can go on one of the most scariest roller coasters (not because of the crash that was because of a HUMAN ERROR
the ride didnt do it its self, it was the operators fault because he probably didnt see that the first carriage had stalled and sent the 2nd before noticing
