  • Gain some intimate insight into the watercolour and gouache work of Sophie Charalambous, 'Thru September and Beyond the Stars,' 2021. This snapshot into her artistic process allows you to peak behind the curtain and see the world created behind the painting, as Charalambous surrounds herself with images that are to be translated onto her canvas. The Cypriot-British artist is captivated by Cyprus, with its flora, fauna, folk art and ancient history all having their own effect on her compositions.
Charalambous' influences for this specific work include a fresco in Pompei with altered Christian iconography, the fig rather than the apple tree of knowledge, a tree and a variety of specific insects. Charalambous explains how the turpentine tree acts as a shrine to a local saint, who is given votive offerings of colourful rags.
