Adrian Jangala Robertson, Yalpirakinu,
Rebecca Hossack reads from the catalogue of Yalpirakinu to artist, Adrian Jangala Robertson.
Adrian Jangala Robertson is an artist with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists: a supported art studio in central Australia for First Nations artists living with disability. Here, Robertson finds his expression through painting. His emotive and freely-worked depictions of family and friends, and of the dramatic landscape of Central Australia, have an emotional intensity that has seen him dubbed ‘the Van Gogh of the Central Desert’.
Born at Papunya, an Aboriginal community in the Central Desert, in 1962, Adrian Jangala Robertson grew up amidst the founding fathers of the Desert Painting movement. (The movement - which saw traditional motifs being set down for first time in permanent and portable form, in paint on board - began at Papunya in 1971, initiated by a group of senior men from the community with the encouragement and engagement of the school art-teacher Geoffrey Bardon.) Robertson now lives in Alice Springs.
The artist’s a-temporal connection to his mother’s homeland of Yalpirakinu abounds with the profound spiritual knowledge that is part of his inheritance. With a unique and powerful intimacy, he depicts panoramic views and portraits of friends and relatives. Cloud-banks swell and float over red- mountain ridges speckled with bush shrub, or the flash of a ‘road train’ lorry on an unmetalled road. His vision is as loaded with memories of childhood as it is illustrative of the immediate surroundings.
Adrian Jangala Robertson is the recipient of numerous prestigious prizes for contemporary aboriginal art. In 2024, Roberson received a triple-nomination for the prestigious Wynne, Archibald and Sulman: an unprecedented achievement for an Aboriginal artist. Previous prizes include the Telstra Painting Award (2020), and the coveted Alice Prize in 2022. Yalpirakinu will mark his first solo exhibition outside of Australia.

    Its really great that people like Rebecca Hossack champion these wonderful artists. She is a unique voice giving voice to a unique style of art that resonates through generations. Those of us who respond to such works should feel privileged that we can merely touch the surface of such a deep beauty rooted in a culture whose surface we can only skim. Thank you for this.

    I'm not a fine artist but I've had a similar encounter with Beatrice over past 3 years, there's something about her that wants to be portrayed alive not as a dead angel in heaven as she's traditionally seen. Anyways a beautiful painting I love how she turned out.

    Blatant yet poorly executed ripoff of Kehinde Wileys concept.

    • @michelledoran1558
      @michelledoran1558 Před 2 měsíci

      I can see the similarity (large figure with bold decorative botanicals completely filling the negative space) however I don’t think thats enough to call it a rip off. Kehinde Wiley has much more realistically rendered figures, less visible brushstrokes- their painting styles are very different.

    • @atelier27
      @atelier27 Před 2 měsíci

      Completely different style. Who I ripped off who? That is the question always. No way to know and it doesn’t matter as long as it is not a direct rip off and if one makes the subject their own and in their own way.

    • @petalparker5

      Completely different style of painting.

    • @hd-xc2lz
      @hd-xc2lz Před 2 měsíci

      I wouldn't call it a ripoff, as Wiley is hardly the first painter to envelop his portrait subject with botanical detail. But it does unfortunately share with Wiley graceless use of photo for the portrait subject.

  • @andreaandrea6716

    I love how Nikoleta describes the process of Beatrice coming through. I remember Graham Greene talking about writing... and how, in his novels, he thought he knew what was going to happen but then a minor character would take over ... and some major character would fade into the background, or disappear. One wonders "Who is in charge?" As an artist myself, I always feel as if I am the mid-wife to this birth taking place. I never know what is going to come about. I am on this journey of discovery, which is so exciting, because I am simply delivering the goods ... or, the Spirit that has decided to bless me with an appearance. Not surprisingly, there is little cohesion in what I produce!

    No houses, or anything. It's far more complex than that, people ask me what I'm painting and I really don't have an answer for them, just that it makes me feel something and I have to get it out. Then I ask them what makes them stop and stare and many give the same answer. It pulls the eye. Wonderful, thank you.

    This was so interesting and great to hear the artist talk about the piece. I love this kind of art but have never heard the artist talk about it, it’s usually left up to the viewer and you never get to know how the artist actually views the piece or how it came about. I personally love the composition and the colors and the way it sits together. It kind of reminds me of a secret door with the slabs going up to it . Thanks for the opportunity to experience the mind behind an abstract work of art.
