How do you determine if the black trim on top of the tank is structural or just visual, or is it just common that all trim is just "visual" for holding a cover?

I always appreciate the economy of your projects. A lot of do-it-yourself articles or videos I see on the web for everything from cooking to home renovation toss off dollar amounts for supplies as if spending $100 here and there were nothing.
I think it's particularly important for aquarists--especially freshwater aquarists--who seem to be perpetually strapped financially. I don't know if people who are financially inept are just attracted to the hobby, or if the hobby is such a distraction that even if you were well off before you started, you end up below the poverty line after keeping fish for a few years. Or maybe it's just that a lot of the people who keep aquaria are minors who don't bring in a regular paycheck.
In any case, I love the way you always present truly economical (and often environmentally responsible) solutions to common fish-keeping problems.
    Thanks!
    Dave

I dont mind it on bigger tanks, but 55gal and under is all the same size. (until you get to the 10-15gal range and it gets smaller) I think it should be rated based on the height of the tank.

First thought: I thought the main function of that part was that of a brace to hold down the aquarium glass in place.
Second thought: you can use aluminum. Some window manufacturers (at least in Mexico) will provide them with a wooden-like paint, even with a little bit of texture. Of course, it`s quite an extra buck.

I just picked up a 75g. The trim is scratched and looks awful, and the center brace is broken. Can I use this method to make a new one? Assuming I get some stronger/thicker plastic or other material? The tank will be for turtles, so it wont be completely filled like it would be with fish. Would this method still had some security to keep it bowing out at all?

Indeed. I don't like a trim on the tanks i build, but it really depends on the tank. With that said, more people have a tank trim than not.
