If your looking for a little bit quicker way...
I pop the plastics off the tank,
    Wipe down with acetone,
Dust coat them with plastic adhesion promoter,
    Paint them,
    Then silicone back on.
It's goes pretty quick and easy.
    No sanding or masking needed.
    Try it some time!
I lay a 2x4 on the glass and tap it towards the plastic gently with a small hammer.
    Works very well.
And yes! Plastic Tan Wood grain is like disco. It was never classy! 🤣

What paint did you use? Is it rated safe for fish in the case of possible leaching up the seams?

I’m planning on giving my 20 gallon a complete makeover. I want everything change, paint rim white, add transparent background, add black substrate and change the whole scape;the issue is that it has an established community which I will to set up a temporary tank for😅.

I tried making a ghetto planted tank but I totally failed in the project because I have my blood parrot cichlid mandarin and she likes to rip up the plants and she moves things around so there would be a mess of dirt and I've tried keeping my plants alive but they would die from all the stress because she would keep ripping them out.

I think those are a sweet idea to have in that space, but you said you where not going to heat them and only have plants... well you can have white cloud mountain minnows as well as a plethora of other cold water fish to stock them instead of no fish. Some shrimp will also handle pretty cold temps. There is a lot of native fish too that could work in those planted tanks. And they wont require heaters either. Just thought I would throw that out there. Awesome space for sure you have and can't wait to see these tanks once you have them setup.

Wood Grain works in SOME scenarios. If it matches say the stand in my opinion it works great on my messy planted tank. I'm curious, how smooth does this turn out? I'm guessing its something you can't tell from a distance, but if you ran your hand over it its gonna be super easy to tell.

Black trim looks much better but that stand isn't built properly. There should be vertical supports between the square frames not outside. The way you have it all the weight (approx 600lbs) is resting on 8 screws. The sheer strength of a #6 decking screw is 70lbs, or 560lbs total. #8 screws have 87lbs sheer strength or 696lbs total, this still isn't enough of a safety factor. For comparison I built a stand for my 90g with two 2x4 supports between each corner of the top and bottom frames. One vertical 2x4 alone can support 636lbs.

Leave it, who the hell cars. If ya don’t like it use fusion paint. As far as cheap tanks , I have 2 20s a30 and a 45. Had to use smaller tank I rent a duplex. I paid 85 $ total for the four ranks. One of my 20s is way ghetto, it has stainless steel rims and corners.
You ever use spray on bed liner for the back?

I like going in places and seeing wood grain tanks. To me it does say old school and in most cases for me it shows me how long the people have been in the hobby and their experience level. Most people that have been in the hobby forever will have about 3 types of wood grain trim plus black. Most of the guys that been in forever don’t take the time to paint their trim or replace their tanks because of trim color.

Easier way tho is just paint it and use a razor blade on the glass to scrap off the excess saves a lot of time the paint comes off very easy

I like the original type finish on my aquariums. Here we get the Akvastabil aquariums. They are built like a tank, and the aluminum supports, ill like to call them, in any color looks pretty great. Even if you get a 90s model. And as I said the built quality is second to none. Too bad you don’t have this quality over there
