How We Train for Hiking and Climbing

- A number of you guys have asked us exactly how we train for hiking and climbing, especially for the long/hard hikes you've been seeing us tackle lately. So, we thought it would be fun to take you along on one of our climbing and hiking training workouts. For this specific hiking workout, we were focused on muscles that are important not only for strength and endurance, but also for class 3 climbing skills. Our hiking training plans will differ based on the specific hike or climb we are preparing for, but we hope this will give you an idea of the kinds of exercises and workouts that we design to build strength and endurance and to avoid injury while out on the trails.
DISCLAIMER: This video is not intended as workout advice. We simply wanted to answer your questions and share some of our hiking training methods with you. We are not physicians licensed physical therapists or trainers. Always consult with your own doctor before attempting any new exercise or training routine.

Love this couple! There support for each other is incredible!
Thank you! That is very kind of you. 🙏❤️
Super useful! :) Would love to see more training videos!
Very glad to hear that! Definitely check out the weight training and core training videos we did, and also the class 3 and 4 climbing one we just posted. And we'll do some more in the future as well!! ❤️
Love that you both encourage each other so much!
Thanks so much -- it definitely makes things more fun! ❤️
You guys are always so happy and positive. It is greatly appreciated in our current word. Thanks, see ya's on the trail
Aw thanks so much for that supportive comment. We really do find that a happy and positive attitude tends to spread and create a helpful feedback effect, even during the midst of challenging things, like what we’ve all been through in the past year ❤️ hope you’re doing well!
Love to see your workouts, have added some of these exercises in to mine. Have a great weekend!!!
Yes, that is awesome Cynthia! Please let us know which ones you use and how you like them. And of course, if you have any modifications or suggestions for us, let us know 🤗
This is way cool! So nice to see you guys behind the scenes and working hard so you can play hard! I would love to see what you guys are eating to stay healthy and lean! Keep pushing!
Thanks Paul! And that's a great idea. We will absolutely do one on food soon. We've been working really hard to find healthy carbs to fuel our adventures, but it's not easy!
You guys are a true inspiration. Enjoy your vids and here's to more hiking which I do try to do on weekends now and exercises of course 😉. Discovering nice trails right here in Toronto. Need to get some bikes to take onto the trails as well. Keep em coming.
Right on Nilakshan! We've been wanting for a long time to get up and hike in Canada. Hopefully we can hit you up for some advice when that time comes!
So I stumbled upon your hard work and Amazing channel about a month ago. I showed my love and she is extremely excited to plan our first hike. You guys are awsome love ya ! We live out in Bakersfield but it's a quick drive to Seqouia or LA We do it all the time. Cheers you guys!
Yes! That is one of the best things we’ve heard all month, Evan! So proud we helped you recruit your partner- it will be incredible for your relationship! Please, please keep us updated how the first hike goes!!!
I may watch every one of your videos in one night! Awesome stuff! Thanks!
Wow thank you so much! Well we should have lots more coming up for you -- one every Thursday!
A nice way to mix it up. It's inspiring the way you both encourage, challenge, and support each other. Rock on!
Thanks Gary! It really is easier to have someone challenge you - especially on those “lazy” days when you’re not quite as motivated from within!
Thanks for sharing your adventures and how you two beasts train for them. Keep them coming! 👊🏼🙌🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the support Val! We will absolutely keep them coming! Happy weekending :D
Wow! So happy I found you guys! I love this video. I'm all about hiking and pullups!
Well you sound like our soulmate! If Adam could just do hiking and pull ups for the rest of his life he'd be happy 😂 Well, maybe the occasional body surfing in the ocean as well!
Guys I love your training videos, I watched four of your videos already this evening, you are at my old stopping ground at Santa Monica, currently back in Huntington Beach.. keep up the great work
Thanks so much -- we're psyched you like the training videos! We had a great time making them, so will def do some more in the future -- especially of our Santa Monica beach workouts and maybe even one of our ocean swim workouts (though that might be harder to film!). Santa Monica is great, but Huntington is awesome too so can't say you made a bad trade.
This was helpful. I have been watching a number of your videos and this question did cross my mind. I know in order for me to do some of these hikes or at least harder hikes for my skill / fitness level I need more training and this was helpful. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks so much Andrew! So happy that you’re liking the videos, and we will definitely try to put out more training videos when we get the opportunity. Although with the number of crazy hikes we have coming up in the next few weeks, it may be a little while! But don’t worry, we will definitely keep you entertained with what’s coming up! 🤣❤️
Loved this! My fiancé and I have been getting more into bouldering so this actually helped a lot. Definitely will be adding those alternative planks to our training sessions. You two are such a joy to watch together and we love your videos! Such an underrated channel.
I would love to see a video on both your favorite thru-hiking/ trail gear, shoes, brands etc.!
Thanks so much, Michelle! Seriously STOKED to hear that you guys are getting into bouldering and are going to do the superman planks. Please let us know how it goes for you -- Adam totally swears by those planks, and he really does do spans all the time when we're scrambling. And we'll definitely do a gear video, probably in the next month or two!
Good job guys, some great tips for everyone & I was liking all of the step variations 💪 Hope your both keeping well 👍🏃
Thanks so much Martin! We are definitely keeping well and having a great summer. Looking forward to lots of steps up mountains in the next few weeks 😂 Hope you're doing well and on the mend!
Super helpful! Been stuck training and step ups look smart/perfect. Thanks!
Yes! Step ups have made a huge difference since we’ve started adding them in. And with so many variations, you can really target whatever you’re missing in your training plan. Let us know how it goes!
Just discovered your channel and love the tips for training. Currently training for a month long hiking trip and these tips have definitely assisted improve my stamina and strength. Thank you for sharing! Happy hiking!
Nikkie that makes us SO happy to hear!! Please let us know how the hiking trip goes -- is it in the Sierra? We'd really like to hear how this training performs for you out in the field! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you for the kind words and encouragement.
I am doing a southern Utah / Arizona month long trip. I went in June and July where I learned a valuable, yet humbling lesson of what heat does to ones body.
A few of my friends and I are planning to do Bright Angel, Subway in the spring and …. (Drum role) …. Half dome in the summer. 😁.
The Dolomites have been on my list for a few years and I am planning a trip possibly next fall or the following year.
Love your guys content and outlook. Definitely is inspiring!
I started a new exercise challenge with your latest workout video and step ups from this video. They definitely relate to hiking. Thanks for putting these out to help others and show the lighter side as well. We like seeing behind the curtain.
Yes!!! We are seriously pumped to hear that, and if you're doing both the core stuff and the step-ups then you're basically doing exactly what we do for our most common quick workout. Please let us know how it goes -- we really love sharing this stuff, and it means a lot to us that you're giving it a try.
Loved this video! I recently moved to Florida from living out west and was wondering how to train for hiking trips. This was awesome and would love to see more!
Thanks so much Aurelia! These moves are great for when you can’t get out on a trail OR go to a gym. Hope you like them! We enjoy making these types of training videos so will definitely share more! ❤️
This was super helpful. Definitely would love to see more training videos!
Awesome! We're actually planning another one right now!
I section hike (backpack) the AT in the Spring and Fall. Hence, I have to get in shape 2x a year. For 6-8 weeks before I do lots of cardio, lunges and wellness (stretching) yoga. I hope to add a few more things from this video as I'm hiking the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine in Sept. Lucky me! At age 59, my goal for these adventures is to enjoy them to the max, vs. just surviving them. That requires diet and excersize in advance.
P.S. I agree 100% on slowing down on the dips and pull-ups, about 4 seconds down on the dips and the same going up w/ pull-ups works nice for me.
Wow! You sound like you have the most awesome adventures every year. Would love to get out to the AT at some point, but that 100 miler in Maine sounds pretty epic also. We could not agree more about enjoying vs surviving. That's definitely what keeps us motivated even when we're not on the trail to stay dedicated to our training. Let us know how these moves work out for you, and can't wait to hear about your trek in September!
Are these group hikes / climbing? Have you also tried Tai-Chi, Pilate's and cycling? Good journey on your exercise quests.
That’s was really great, can’t wait to see the rest of your training videos. You both did fantastic,Adam great job on the rope, you have tremendous upper body strength, and Elise super proud of you with your pull ups.I remember when I trained I did extensive isometrics and did resistance running,I wish those days were back, anyhow great seeing you guys in action, love you both, stay well😊❤️
Aw thank you so much Joseph! Isometrics are awesome, and we've definitely been incorporating more of those as we've been doing more climbing type things. Seems like a really great way to build strength while avoiding injury. So glad you liked the training video. We'll definitely do some more of these when we get a chance!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard super yes I like innovative exercising,I must do this now more than ever,I never give up on anything and you both are my ardent inspirers,😊❤️
A regiment lime this will keep you two conquering the world for decades to come! Im doing an easy one.this week at Sugarloaf Big Bear... but scheduled for onion valley eastern sierras in Aug... Gorgonio and San Jacinto (no tram)... with Whitney and Shasta by may 2021!!!
Your vids keep me in line. Thanks!
Wow Matt! That is an AWESOME line-up you've got going. Whitney AND Shasta? Fantastic! So glad you're enjoying the videos, and please let us know how your adventures progress!
I really enjoyed this video and appreciate you sharing your workout.
Thanks so much! We're really glad you liked it, and we're already thinking about how we can do another thing like this during our next week off. 😊
Both of my children were competitive gymnasts and always climbed ropes, often with hands only. Fantastic exercise. I love your workout in general because it's body weight, full range of motion and generates power through the entire range of motion.
Thanks so much Charlie! And competitive gymanastics - wow. That is something that was never/will never be in the cards for us, both because we're entirely too tall and lanky and because we're utterly inflexible haha. But having the strength of a gymnast is certainly a good goal for us!
this one is gold! i needed to know how you guys prepare for these things!
Haha thanks! Hoping you find it useful. We've been getting lots of requests to share different aspects of our training, so will probably get together a few more vids showing various parts of our overall plan and training philosophy :)
Love the discipline and energy of you two!
Thanks Shane! Yeah, sometimes it's hard to keep our energy high during the work week, but we find that getting up early for workouts is the best way. Which, as you say, does take some discipline 😂 Glad you enjoyed!
Great video. As a flat-lander, I’m always looking for creative ways to improve. The step-ups and bouldering are crucial. Neither of us climb really, but the scrambling at Katahdin worked muscles I didn’t know existed.
Haha yes! We have the same thing when we haven't scrambled in a while, and step ups are def a good way to prep your body (though we're always still sore after the first big scramble of the season!). ❤️
Wow, wow, wow!!! You two are amazing, and I love your positivity. It radiates from you.
Thanks Liz! We both love working out at the beach -- def easier to be positive when we're lucky enough to live here!
Outstanding ! Thanks !
Our pleasure, Robert -- glad you liked it, and hope the exercises are helpful!❤️
So important to stay in shape.. you guys make it look easy!
Haha, thanks Mark! Definitely not easy, but totally agree with you- by far the most important thing in life, no matter how much money you make, how successful you are, if you don't have your health, nothing else is quite as enjoyable.
You two are athletic, outdoor rockstars! Love it ❤️
You are the sweetest, Kate. Thanks so much for always being so encouraging!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your routines-awesome
Thanks so much! We were really surprised that people were so interested in what we did to train, but also super happy because we love training and are delighted to share our routines!!
Love tagging along on your adventures .. love this video .. beyond inspiring, enabling .. also love Santa Monica :)
Thank you so much! Enabling is a great phrase, and definitely what we aspire to be. ❤️ Santa Monica for the win!
I loved seeing a different type of video from you guys! You could also film a morning routine for when you go on one of your hikes. I think it'd be interesting to see how you prepare
Thanks Leea! So glad you liked it, and that is really a good idea about filming the morning preparation. We could do everything from what we eat, to how we warm up, to what gear we're bringing. Of course, it will involve getting Adam out of bed more than five minutes before we leave 😂 but should be possible! Thanks for the idea!
Loved this!! Thank you!! Please do more videos like these! What are your favorite shoes, gear to use?
Thanks so much Amada! Glad to hear you liked this one, because we enjoy sharing these kinds of tips and more behind the scenes things with you guys. We do plan to do a full gear breakdown video or two (probably once the weather gets really bad and we’re forced inside some weekends) but until then we did make a list of our most asked about pieces of gear on our website here: www.livehardxlovehard.com 🤗
Love this one!!! So cool to see how you two train! I knew you could do 4! 💪🏻🤩
Haha thanks Earl! Definitely should have gone for five. NEXT TIME.
I LOVE watching all your videos! You guys are the best and both easy on the eyes😎😆 not sure if you have shown or shared your nutrition or what are the usual snacks, meals and stuff you put in your backpack. I am 50 and hope to keep hiking as long as I can! Thanks so much!
Haha awww thank you so much Melinda! Hiking until we are FAR beyond fifty is definitely a priority for us too. Breaking down our nutrition on and off trail is actually one of our most highly requested videos right now. So we are definitely planning to share that with you guys soon, just gotta find a time we’re not adventuring to make it happen! ❤️
Thank you! I am going to add these exercises to my workouts.
That is awesome Christine! Let us know how they work out for you! ❤️
Yay! The long awaited training video! :) I found this pretty informative and would love if you were to release more videos of this style during your downtime. Thank you and stay safe on the trails!
Wow thank you so much! We're delighted that you liked it, and we will DEFINITELY do some more of these when we get a chance! It was actually really fun and fairly easy to make because we just basically filmed our workout and talked in between sets 😂 Have a great weekend!
Since you are asking... I loved the video! Getting to see you 2 do your daily life in preparation for your trips, is a great way to get to know you more! Thanks for sharing! Working on those extended arm planks now... ouch!
Yes Julie!!! Stoked you are doing the plank- that is Adam’s absolute favorite! Really delighted you enjoyed this video- we can def do some more during weeks when we can’t get out to the trails!
Sitting on my couch engorging myself saying "I could do that"....
Haha, best comment yet Fred! The great thing about going out on these sufferfests is that when you get back you DEFINITELY get to sit on the couch and engorge 😂
Haha sitting in the air conditioned car on break wishing I could 😄
@@nicolenemeth9989 Hi, you didn't say if your in shape or not. But your watching this video and could be doing it at the sane time. Cheers!
I like how you show the exercise and then cut to examples in the field. A lot of practical examples here
So glad you like that, Lamont! That's exactly what we like in videos as well, which is why we did this one that way. We don't ever train just to train -- we always have specific goals in mind, and want to see how people apply them in the field, so of course we'll always try to show that as well. ❤️
This is great info. I left California in 2020 and I haven't been at altitude since. Going back to visit in the fall so going to take this advice on the cardio to get the heart ready for those mountains again. Thanks for sharing your training!
Thanks Danielle, hopefully these tips are helpful! Where did you move to? We're sure that CA misses you 😢
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Pennsylvania. The tallest mountain here is only 3,213' feet! My husband and I hiked all over SoCal so this is a real change. Lots of long walks in the woods which are very pretty, but just not those heart racing challenges like we had out west. Love watching your videos. Keeps me inspired for when we get to come back for a visit! :)
Well we hope Pennsylvania is treating you right, and these CA mountains will always be here for you when you need! ❤️❤️
I'm not sure why CZcams was so sure that I'd like your videos but you guys bring a great friendly vibe and beautiful scenery. I'm a cyclist and hiker and if you want to build some explosive quads and it's hard to beat getting on the bike! I think what I really need to take from you guys is your obvious dedication to core workouts and diet as well so I can finally lose my last 10-15 lbs of fat and have the kind of body I can really be proud of.
Yes!!!! We actually love biking, and Adam especially does some of the most epic canyon road rides around LA and Malibu. Maybe we’ll film one of those at some point if we can figure a cool way to do it.
More training videos, please! Love your energy & connection!!
Thank you so much! We will be happy to make some more of these when we’re not out climbing - perhaps one where we’re training bouldering and rope skills?
@@LiveHardxLoveHard yes, that would be awesome! You two inspired my husband & I to “get back out there” & start hiking again. Last weekend we did a 7 mile loop hike (in Las Vegas) & had a blast (mostly on the way back down haha)! Learning lots of new techniques & skills by watching your videos-thanks for sharing!
OMG. We seriously love nothing more than hearing we've inspired someone to get out on the trails. Makes us so happy! So glad you're having fun out there and definitely keep us posted on your progress!
Some great stuff in here. Loved this. I would definitely like more of this. How often do you do this routine, every other day, three times a week or what
Thanks so much Ian! It really depends on whether or not we have a hard hike coming up that weekend. If we don’t have anything hard coming up, then three workouts during the week for sure. If we just finished a hard hike and have another hard one the following weekend, we may just do this once, because we need to store up energy for what’s coming up. So basically we modify our training around whatever adventure is coming up 🤗
Great workout tips and ideas👍🏼
Thanks Stephanie! If you try some of these, please let us know how you like them, and which ones work best for you!
Great teamwork!! Lots of support and love you both share!! I'm hooked with your videos!! Adam and Elise, how do you train for jogging and running? For what noticed in your adventures is that your steps have a short stride and low from the ground to apparently have a less impact on your feet.
That's exactly right, Orlando! We have a video where we talk about tips on how to trail run from a few months ago -- it's the Los Liones to Parker Mesa one. That one will give you a good idea about the basics how we do it. But maybe we should do another one on more advanced techniques too. Meanwhile, really glad you're enjoying the videos. We're having so much fun sharing all these adventures!
Hey guys! What does your cardio training look like? Yall are studs making the long treks look so easy.
Also, just wanted to say you two are seriously awesome. Your positive energy, kindness, and sense of humor is fantastic. Im binging the hell out of your vids. Keep pumping them out for us!
Wow, thank you so much for this encouraging and uplifting comment! We're so happy you're enjoying the vids and can't wait to share the upcoming adventures with you! Regarding cardio training, we should probably do a whole video on this, but basically it really varies based on what we've got planned for our hiking and trail running adventures. On weeks where we've got a big sufferfest coming up, we actually go pretty light with our cardio because we don't want to overtrain or wear down our muscles. On our off weeks is where we'll put in the most time with our cardio training (although lately the off weeks seem few and far between!) and we try to cross train with a mix of running, biking and swimming so we can minimize our risk of injury as much as possible. Honestly, the biggest boost to our endurance has just come from going out on weekly hiking adventures and increasing the mileage and elevation gain little by little!
Love it. You are doing more than what I did in the military.
Thanks! Actually a lot of the things we do are military inspired, because Adam's daughter is Army ROTC and she's constantly bringing new stuff. We also train with her to get a high score on the new Army fitness test, which is much more comprehensive and functional than the old one.
Great video Guys! Elise, It would be awesome to see a video of what you eat in a day before a hike or your overall diet to maintain your body so fit and athletic.
Thank you so much Karla, and that is actually a really great idea for a video! Maybe like a combo of both general diet and then specifically what we eat when we do hikes. Thanks for the idea!
Nice! Loved the pull ups and the rope climb challenge
Yes! Love those surprise challenges - keeps you motivated til the very end of the workout! 😊
would love to see a video on how you find/ choose your trails, what apps you use, how you plan for each hike ahead of time based on the information you find. you guys seem to just find the most unique under showcased places. just love it. just watched every video in 2-3 days lol screw Netflix binges #livehardlovehardbinge
That's a great idea, Dana. Planning for each adventure -- everything from downloading the right GPS tracks to how much food and water to bring -- is such an important part of what we do. We will definitely do a video around that concept! Meanwhile, so glad you're enjoying the adventures -- we have lots and lots more craziness planned for 2022!!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard can’t wait to follow along!
Love your videos! ❤️
Aw thank you so much for the encouragement Marek! Love sharing these vids with ya!
You make it look so easy out in the mountains. Now I know why!
Thanks Bill -- it's all about the preparation and training for sure!!
Getting ready for Mt Whitney, 2 time. This will help a lot👍🏼💪🏼
That is awesome Jerry! Congrats on winning the Whitney lottery! It definitely will help - we used much of this type of leg training before we did Whitney, and it was absolutely a godsend on those switchbacks. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for sharing your hiking workout routine! Those exercises will keep you young and strong! Oh, and I also really enjoyed your video on hiking to the Palisade Glacier. -As for me, I bought a 2007 Toyota Sienna Minivan earlier this month, and I've been spending my spare time converting it to a camper van. I'm driving my minivan to King's Canyon National Park, and I'm hiking Goat Mountain on Monday! I'll let you know how it goes :-)
Yes! We’re gonna be doing basically the same thing in Sequoia this weekend!! Can’t wait to hear how Goat goes and if it’s as great as it looks- if so, we’ll def be following in your footsteps!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Have a great time!!
Been waiting for this one. Thanks for sharing. How many times a week do you do this? I assume you mix it up with cardio.
Awesome Derrick! Glad we were able to get this one out. How often we do this type of workout really depends on what we did the weekend before and what we have coming up. If we just did a complete sufferfest on Sunday, we might just only do this once on Wednesday if we have another big hike coming up on, say, Saturday. On the other hand, if we have a weekend where we're not doing much, we could easily do this kind of workout three times a week. And yes, we're always doing cardio at least 2-3x/week anytime we're not doing a massive sufferfest hike.
Great training vid! How about endurance training vid? A gear vid would be cool too
Yes! An endurance training video is a great idea. Adam is already starting to salivate at the idea of a video that's just about pure training and suffering 😂 We are also definitely going to do a gear video - thinking it could be helpful for people to understand exactly what we bring with us, especially in terms of safety gear since it's mostly just stuff that stays in the pack and you normally wouldn't necessarily see during the video. Thanks Alex!
Great stuff guys! You guys are legit! Adam, add this to your rope climb challenge. Sit on the ground at the base of the rope, legs straight out and together, rope off to one side. Now hold this "L" shape, and begin climbing, leaving the rope off to one side (not going between your legs). Once you reach the top, don't slide down. Instead, maintain that "L" and lower yourself, hand-over-hand, with the rope off to the side! Elise, you're a machine!! 4 pull ups is bada$$.
Thanks so much Todd! And WOW that L rope climb sounds HELLA HARD. But yes, I will absolutely try it. I will not be able to wear those gloves though. Not sure if you could tell but they were super slippery, and I could barely even hang on without sliding down the rope 😂 Will probably have to try it with some chalk on the hands and no gloves at all. Will let you know how it goes! 😱 -A
Great Video. I would love.to see a video on the subject of nutrition during your sufferfests!
Yes Raymond! That is a fantastic idea. We've literally been doing so much work on that subject because we're trying to figure out lower glycemic carbs to bring with us on hikes rather than just junky things like pop tarts and granola bars. Once we really have our nutrition game down we will absolutely do a video on it. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love step ups, I would average up to 30 min straight of them and if I'm really ambitious, I'll do up to 1000 in 50-55 minutes. That kind of workout makes it way easy for me to hike. You guys got some killer and basic training ideas that are really underrated.
Wow Ben, that is an AWESOME workout. And of course, now we have to take it as a challenge 😂 Neither one of us has ever done 1000 in one workout, but next time we get a chance we are definitely going to try. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard go for it lol. The best way I did it was using a deck of cards.
2-10 would be those reps per leg
Aces are 32 (16 per leg)
Jokers are 100 (50 per leg)
K/Q/J are 20 (10 per leg)
All that adds up to 1000 total. My fastest time is 50:01. The height of a step up I use is at 14 inches (no more than 15 inches so I don't overextend the hip joint with extreme high reps).
Guys please do more of these fitness videos !! Especially liked the part in which Adam tells to slow down for gaining actual strength (this is something I will do in gym, fewer but slower reps..) We can learn more from you guys .. :-)
Thanks so much for the feedback! It's good to know that you guys find these videos useful, because we'd love to share more of this type of info with you guys. So more training vids coming your way, stay tuned!
I love doing that kind of stuff. In my back yard, I love to use my kids monkey bars to do chin ups and I love to do lunges on my kids balance beam along with push ups on it. You guys are awesome!!!
Oh my gosh, you just totally took me back to my own backyard monkey bars where I first learned to do chinups as a kid! That's where it started, and I still prefer playground type workouts over anything else -- awesome that you use the equipment that way! --A
Loved it please share more of these
So glad to hear you liked it! We just put out one on our altitude training. Let us know if there’s any other topics you’d like us to cover!
Awesome job guys
Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed the vid!
I love to run, hike and do upper body exercise. I hate anything to do with legs. I have been following your leg exercises for the last few weeks. I can't believe how much easier it is to run the hills. I am still slow and steady, but it feels great when I come across a long hill and I run the whole thing. I so look up to the both of you. Daniel
Wow Daniel that is the best news hearing that these exercises are working for you! We love the feeling of testing yourself on bigger and bigger hills and seeing what you can accomplish. Looking forward to seeing what kind of climbs you’re going to start tackling with this newfound strength! ❤️
Dan I just saw this because Elise has been responding to our messages the last few days, but I wanted to say I'm STOKED you're doing the exercises! And also, if you have a gym you go to occasionally, I really like dead lifts with the hex bar as an addition for leg strength. The hex bar is safer on the low back, but it really gives me a TON of leg power, which has been really helpful on a lot of our adventures. And say hi to Evan for us! -- A
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I work with Evan on Monday and Tuesday. I will say hi to him for you. Thanks for always having positive things to say.
Great kind of video, if you ask me. I'd love to watch more of this kind: what u guys eat?, how much u sleep? how many days of rest u allow yourselves between strenuous hikes? etc.
Best regards!
These are great ideas Diego! We’re already planning out a couple nutrition videos, and the others are great ideas as well, especially the sleeping one given Adam’s love of naps 🤣
Wicked good video! Are you recovered from grand canyon. We are from cardiff by the sea. You should come down to Torrey Pines to train with us. I have raced Ironman for over 20 yrs and D runs marathons. Some of your hikes rad! Not sure we could hang !
You do IM and you're not sure you can hang with us?! You'd probably dust us! We'd both love to do IM but feel our joints would probably not hold up. You are our goals! And yes we are finally recovered from Grand Canyon and looking forward to another major climb this weekend :) Would love to visit down in your area though, it must be a gorgeous place to train!
Nice! Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks so much guys, it is truly our pleasure!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard no problem! We really enjoy the outdoors and filming our experiences also
You guys are crazy! So many hikes in the past year...are you guys working remotely at all while traveling? I'd love to hit a fraction of the hikes you guys do while working full-time. Is it just a matter of taking advantage of every weekend? Love the videos
Thanks so much Quinn! Yes, we really mostly just maximize our weekends and vacation time. Of course, our friends complain that they never see us unless they come out on a trail with us, but we feel that that is good for them to get them out of the bars and into the wild 😂
Nice job guys what I do is a balance session using a bosu ball that way my core is always stabilize that way I fill alot more what ever muscle I'm working making my joints stronger but a variation of every movement is a plus thanks guys ❤️
That's awesome Raymond! Elise loves the bosu for core work also. Adam wants to be more bosu oriented too, but he loses patience 😂 Maybe you should train him!
Great tips on working out for hiking. I'm going to change my gym routine a little to incorporate some what you do.
Curious how effective is the hop on the step up's?
That's great David, we're so happy to hear you're going to incorporate some of this stuff, it's been truly worthwhile for us. We both like the hop on the step ups for different reasons. E likes doing it for a long period of time as a cardio cross training workout, whereas Adam does fewer reps but hops higher because he feels it's a great way to increase jumping ability for when he leaps across gaps (which, you may have noticed, he does fairly often 😂 ). So definitely effective!
Love this video! Could you please share the link for the gloves that you use? Thanks!
Thanks Mia! Yes sure, we'll add them to the gear page on our website! ❤️
All good training
My friends lived at 309 Washington Street Venice Beach. I have another military friend who lived in two places: Let's see if I can remember.
Wow, what a great place to live! We are down at the beach nearly every day either walking, running, or working out. Such a great lifestyle plus of this area.
gonna follow this regimen
Yes! Can't wait to hear how you like it. Please let us know what works for you and what doesn't and whether you find it helpful for your climbing :)
@@LiveHardxLoveHard My girl and I having been doing trails with lots of boulder scrambling, so this video will help out alot!
This was a great video! I'm going to try some of these exercises. I need to work on leg strength. Last time I hiked to the Baldy Ski hut my quads felt like Jello! I'm hiking San Jacinto Monday. Thanks guys. Kowabunga!
Thanks David! And that’s so awesome. If you’re trying to up your leg strength then step ups are for sure a good way to go. Since doing them we’ve both noticed a huge difference in not only our ability to book it up the mountain but also in minimizing the soreness the next day! Def let us know how Jacinto goes for you!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Awesome, I will try those. And kudos to Elise for cranking out 4 pullups! I am sure there was at least one more in there. Those are challenging!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I have an idea for a video: How about doing one on diet and nutrition?
Thanks so much David! Definitely shoulda gone for five. I chickened out 😂 NEXT TIME! And yes to that vid idea. It's been a popular request. We've been making some major modifications to our trail diet these days (trying desperately to get healthier and minimize our sugary trail snacks) so once we get that locked down we will definitely share!
Gr8 stuff U 2 👍🏻
Thanks Mark! We were just thinking about those hundreds of step-ups today, because we did a hike where that step-up strength was essential!
Great job Elise on those 4 pull ups 💪😃!!
Thank you! One day I'll get to 10!! ❤️
Well done for both u very good u give good hope to carry on I am hitting 61
61 is still young, Iqbal! Stay strong and you will have many years of great adventuring left!
Great job, guys! How old are you both, cause you're both hella fit! How often do you have to do this training to do hiking/scrambling at your level?
Thanks so much! Elise is a millennial, and Adam is Gen X. Some would say he’s middle aged, but he plans to live to 110 so not quite there yet🤣 We work out about 3-4 time per week if we don’t have a giant hike that week. If we do have a big hike, we usually just work out once.
I've never thought to use playground equipment! 🤦 I always had it in my mind to go to a gym or buy equipment. This is a game changer. Especially for those with kids that can play while they work out.
Yesss! We love finding playgrounds wherever we are - it's an awesome way to get in a great and FREE workout! Also makes working out while traveling much more possible. And yes, if you have kids, perfect way to get some training in while keeping the kiddos happy! :D
Hi!! Can you do a video on your day to day diet? The foods you normally eat? Thank you!
Yes we have one! It's called "The hiking diet" and it's in the "How we train" section of the channel. Hope you will like it! ❤️
You two deserve a SUBSCRIBE just for replying to everyone's comment!!!
Haha, well thanks for noticing! Truly one of the most fun things about doing this channel has been getting to meet people both virtually and, now that people are starting to recognize us, out on the trails. Many of our most interesting hikes lately have come from recommendations people gave us in the comments, as did this video actually! Several requested info on how we train. So sometimes it is a lot of comments, but it’s totally joyous for us ❤️
2 to 3 reps Pullups/ pushups and 20-25 min jog Jog 4 days a week made a big difference for me, it wasn't enough to make me super strong but it made me strong enough to enjoy the hike alot more. a 15 mile hike with 3500 feet of climbing went from grueling to moderate. My mile run went from 9 minutes to 6:45, my longest run went from 2-3 miles to several miles and I got to the point where I could do several pullups. For several years I had to work full time and go to school and I fell out of this routine/gained alittle weight, its harder to get back into it and I wish our society didn't put quite so much pressure on young people its not good for peoples long term health. I don't think you can train for altitude but being in better shape, pacing yourself, eating and drinking enough reduces the chances of altitude problems. One of my best running times was a 5k race 4 days after I spent a week at 10,000 feet. I don't think the altitude made me any stronger but I had more red blood cells which makes increase the amount of oxygen my muscles were getting which made my muscles work more efficiently. This effect only lasts a week or two.
Wow thanks so much for sharing that story! Going from a 9 minute mile to 645 is immensely impressive. We're doing a bunch of high altitude stuff this summer and really looking forward to coming back to sea level and seeing how it makes a difference with our running. Will let you know how it goes!
That is awesome!!! Thank you so much for the workout training tips. I have not been able to do pull-ups, my upper body is very weak. Elise, Would you recommend using bands to aid you in your training for pull-ups? Or what would you recommend for a novice like me? 🙈
Thanks so much Gabby! I was SO there, so I totally know you can get your first pull-up. Bands are a great tool to train, but I actually learned by jumping up to the bar and then lowering down as slowly as I possibly could. From there, I graduated to jumping up, lowering down, and then doing pulses to really get those lats burning. If you practice consistently, you'll get there! Let me know how it goes for you :)
@@LiveHardxLoveHard awesome!! thank you so much for the tips. This is a great idea, and I will definitely to try it out. You guys are awesome and I am very appreciative for your replies. It means a lot, and I can tell how genuine you guys are by engaging with your followers. 🤗
I will definitely keep you posted on my future accomplishment with these pull-ups. Best regards!!
Inverted rows are a great way to build back strength working towards pull-ups as well. My issue was that I ALWAYS relied too much on my arms, despite intending to use my back. I’d be able to get a few sloppy pull-ups before I exhausted. The rows allowed me to focus in and establish that mind/muscle connection with the muscles in my back.
Like she suggests, bar hangs and negatives are great as well. Start by hanging for time from the bar in bottom position, builds grip strength. When you can do that for a minute hang from the top position on the bar for time with your shoulder blades squeezed together. Once you can do that for a minute start SLOWLY lowering yourself down from the top position. Next thing you know you’ll be knocking out pull-ups seemingly from out of nowhere. Once you build the foundation the move itself just happens.
That's great advice, Blake. Thanks for sharing! And that was definitely my problem too - I still have that issue with inverted rows. I find it hard not to get my traps involved 😂 Ultimately it's about consistency and patience and building little by little!
Great tips .It appears you live in Southern California .We live in the San Fernando valley and I was wondering if you can are aware of some places around this area which teachers rock climbing and mountaineering for teenagers and youth .
That's an excellent question, Sushmita, and we're stoked you are thinking about getting your kids into climbing! Very cool. We have used Rockreation in West LA, Cliffs of Id in Culver City, and also Hollywood Boulders in Hollywood. They are all good climbing gyms (though Hollywood Boulders is just boulders so they don't do the top-roping and lead climbing that the other gyms do). We haven't been to a climbing gym in the valley yet, but I'm sure there are some good ones and you might just want to try a few different ones until you find the right fit. As for mountaineering, the best bet is probably to find one of the instructors at a climbing gym who also knows mountaineering and ask them for a private lesson. We're actually thinking about doing that ourselves, because we really want to get some advanced training in how to recognize avalanche danger so we can feel more confident climbing mountains after a lot of snowfall! ❤️
Wow !! In the middle of this video I jumped off the kitchen table with rope in hand, And started doing chin-ups on the kitchen door frame 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪. So I'm ready for your next video 👍 Let's do it 🤗
Hahaha yes! We're loving this participatory viewing!! But you'd better be careful if Adam ever realizes his dream of paragliding off a peak!!
livehardxlovehard All ok ??? I'll just take a bed sheet of and use it as a parashoot and climb up on the house roof as to practice jumping of a cliff face 🤗 I'll start training tomorrow 👍👍
Hahaha love it!
Great tips and workout. I hate step ups! They are a necessary evil, but so boring. I like the idea of mimicking rock scrambles by stepping up on odd objects, not just a plyo box. New subscriber, thanks for the video
Thanks so much! Adam is exactly the same and gets so bored with step ups. But by choosing weird angle and objects and carrying various amounts of weight, he keeps it very fun and interesting for himself. Elise just puts on headphones and music and grinds throughout 😂 so glad to have you along for the journey! ❤️
instead of the steps on a wall you might try and find a parking garage and use the stairs in it. walking up and down those, while skipping a step with each stride on the way up, is a great workout. Also not as boring as simple repetitive steps on a low wall.
Definitely a good workout, and one which we enjoy doing also! There's a famous set up stairs in Santa Monica appropriately called the "Santa Monica stairs" by locals, and it's where all the fitness junkies go to enjoy a relentless stair workout!
The trifecta. Balwin Hill steps. Santa Monica to Venice and back. Vaquez Rocks. Bam. Eat lunch at the Getty on way to Vasquez. I tried Griffith but it's a traffic jam. Hollywood hills smell like dog crap, because of dog crap. Lol. You can start with Baden Powell if you are motivated!!!
I miss it. But not enough to move back.
Jesus Christ, you guys are beast. All I wanted to know is how in the world you get time and energy to do all these stuffs in addition with your full time job? I was under assumption this is your full time job but looks like I was wrong. Lastly, loved the video and the work out tips.
Haha we wish we could do this full time! Truthfully, we find that doing early morning workouts- especially on the beach since we’re blessed to live so close- helps us enjoy our work days more. It’s like we’re happy because we already got to do something just for us. So glad you liked the video- should be easy for us to do others like this occasionally since it’s basically just filming parts of our actual morning workout!
Yep ! So interesting and as well I would like to know how do you train for altitude, endurance, agile descents....
Thanks Blandine! That's a great question. We are currently in the process of making an altitude training video, because we've got some massive climbs coming up over the next few weeks, so that may be the very next video we have coming up!
That info is right up my alley since I am a CrossFit athlete. However, high level athletes know what you do in the kitchen is more important than what u do in the gym. So could you guys please make a video about you weekly diet and food prep routines?
Yes! Couldn't agree with you more about the importance of nutrition, and we will absolutely do a video of the kind you suggest -- or maybe even two videos, one for how we eat when at home and another for on the road and on the trail.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Yea great idea about the 2 videos! Looking forward to seeing them.
You're my heroes and inspiration ❤. Thank you for this video. Really helpful. I have 2 questions. First, my calf get very tired fast when inclined, will step up helps fix that? Second is it better to run down hills? How come people say running down will hurt your knees more. Thank you. 😊
Wow thank you so much Samantha! These are both really good questions. First, step ups can help your calves, but you want to make sure to do them in a way that is focused on your calves. For example, make it a lower step and focus your push off on using your calf muscle. In other words, focus the movement on the muscle you want to exercise. Elise has also found that jump rope is an insanely good exercise to build calf strength. As for running down hill, there is no question that it is hard on his joints. When Adam is training he usually only runs up hills and walks down hill. We save the running down hill either for joyous beautiful ridges where you just want to run, or for sufferfests when you really need to get back before dark.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you very much for your response. I'm training to conquer San Jacinto peak in 2 weeks. Hopefully I can make it 🙂
We believe in you! Let us know how it goes ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard i just wanted to say Thank you! I conquer Jacinto today. It was tough, took me 6hrs up and 3hr down but I did it with your tips and inspiration. Thank you. 😊💖💖💖
How tall are you guys respectively? I'm glad I found your channel. Keep it up.🇬🇾
We're glad you found us too! Thank you for your kindness and positivity! Adam is 6'6'', and Elise is 5'9''. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard ...thank you for being so respondent. I knew Adam is over 6' 1'' and that Elsie has to be taller than 5'6''. You two look great together and I greatly endorse your training philosophy... just keep getting better by the days.👍🇬🇾
Elise, you've often spoken about how it was a journey for you to get to your current fitness level: you've talked about not being able to run for long distances, do the difficult hikes, etc. I'd love to know what you did to get to the amazing fitness level you're at now. Very inspiring.
Thanks so much Jennifer. That is actually a really good idea for a video, and I'll definitely talk to Adam about doing one on that subject. I'd love to share my experience of going from a very low baseline of fitness to doing these crazy sufferfests - the short version is that it was just a long process of building and staying patient, but it would be fun to do a vid detailing the full story!
