  • Three critical tips to show you how to ride off road. Dual Sport and ADV Riders must know when to sit, stand, or waddle. My biggest mistake when I first started riding off road was to always sit, and when I stood, I stood too far back, and when I waddled, I lost traction. Use the simple pointers in this video to learn good habits, and correct bad habits like I had to!

    Why is it that every time I try to find a video about BASIC off road riding, I get stuff like this with pro's jumping rocks, trees, hill climbing, fording rivers, etc? How about some beginner videos, with basic tips on when to sit, stand, shifting weight around? Maybe tips on cornering, braking , on gravel vs sand, handling small ruts, etc?

    Great footage, got myself a 250 dual to use through winter and I've done some mild of road since, it's an absolute riot but I'm still trying to get comfortable with the less grippy stuff (been on road bikes for 7 years so im rather more used to having things stick!) Great video I'll try and put this into practice!

    Overall there are two simple keys for riding adventure motorcycles off-road - get lots of experience and swap street tires for serious dual-sport tires. (Get Continental TKC-80s. Their traction on the street and their longevity are uncompromised by their badass treads).
    Here are some basic off-road skills…
    • Favor the rear brake except in emergencies, in which case try your best to straighten the front wheel first before using the front brake and rear brake together. Using the front brake tends to make the front tire knife into the dirt surface and trip the bike up.
    • Similarly, keep the wheels straight when turning from asphalt to dirt, ideally making the turn completely on the asphalt part and entering the dirt surface at a 90° angle. If you enter the dirt at a shallower angle, treat it like a curve and counterbalance (see below).
    • Know when to be aggressive on the throttle and when to be gentle on it (sometimes the best defense is a good offense, other times overconfidence will hurt). Speed and momentum are crucial on the softer stuff, but too much will backfire and destabilize the bike. You have to develop a feel for exactly how much throttle by practicing on different surfaces.
    • Ride standing up in rougher terrain. That makes all the difference because it lowers the bike's center of gravity and makes it more maneuverable. Remember to keep your knees slightly bent to allow your legs to flex, and lean slightly forward on straight sections, more forward the steeper any climbs get. On downhills, reverse that and keep your butt rearwards.
    • When encountering a road with ruts, either stay inside the ruts or outside the ruts. The problem is continually going back and forth in and out of a rut, making it an edge trap, which can throw the bike down. If the rut is so narrow that your tires are continually hitting against the sides of the rut, that's an edge trap, so only ride outside of that rut.
    • When riding on softer stuff, shift your weight rearwards to give the rear tire more bite - that also has the advantage of making the front tire "ski" more, creating less drag and making it less likely to trip you.
    • Counterbalance generously on curves, getting your hips outside the lean and weight on the outside pegs. You should be one gear lower for the speed - that discourages swinging wide and gives you more engine braking if you encounter a surprise around the bend. Your outside leg will be mostly bent, the inside leg mostly straight. Know that you can always make your turn sharper by leaning further (I usually like to just straighten out my lower side arm for that).
    • When going over mounds, you need to use finesse on the throttle, going from aggressive to gentle at just the right moment heading up, then be relaxed and confident while finessing the rear brake as you go down the other side. Like with everything else, you get better at it with practice.
    • When encountering hard obstacles you can't maneuver around, (with your butt off the seat and legs flexed), as the front tire gets to the obstacle, hit the throttle a little as you pull up on the handlebars while leaning slightly rearwards (as if to wheelie but not actually doing so) then pogo-stick the rear suspension as the obstacle reaches your rear tire. Practice that in an empty parking lot with a piece of two-by-four.
    And here's a good video if you ever get seriously stuck...

  • @Beyond2Wheels
    @Beyond2Wheels Před 8 lety +2

    I would like to add something to the. waddling that is very important, slipping the clutch. One of the best ways to gain momentum is to slightly slip the clutch rather than relying on the engine to chug you along. I personally only use 1 or 2 fingers and lightly slip the clutch when the engine begins to bog. the idea is not to completely disengage the clutch, but rather to spool up the engine a little while maintaining clutch drag. Back when everyone used to race 2 strokes, it was the best way to launch out of a corner. I see a lot of new riders trying to rely on the torque of their 4 strokes only to stall out.

    • @eveRide
      @eveRide  Před 8 lety +1

      +Beyond2Wheels That is VERY good advice! I actually had a little bit about slipping the clutch in the original video, but didn't want it to go too long or get into advanced stuff. I'll have to do a "clutch feather" video soon, along with the standing video and turning video. Sooo many things to learn when you're new... since I didn't learn them back then, I've developed bad habits and have had to relearn them.

    Really like these types of vids. Helps the new guys like me and reminds the experienced guys to remember the basics! As you do more of these style vids was wondering if you could focus one on off road aggressive turning. I have no confidence in my turns to the right where my right foot would be away from the brake in a hard right hand turn in loose conditions. Thanks Tyler and once again, great work!

    OH MAN... that sounds you made!!! hahhaha I know that sound. haha
    Great video.. one I will for sure share with new riders. I might also add as a HUGE help for new riders, is to watch ahead, not at the tire. Look ahead in corners, look ahead in hill climbs, just always look ahead. That all helps you not focus on the rocks or obstacles as much, letting you rip right through it. So many people all of a sudden "get it" and say to me "now I know what you mean by look ahead"... and ride so much better in that one little realization. But I think getting people to stand while riding is one of the best leaps in their skill for sure.

      That's true, but here in SA we're currently experiencing a trend, very popular amongst BMW GS riders, to stand up ALL the time, even on tar (pavement). We call it meerkatting, because they always stand straight up with knees locked. Apparently a few BMW-backed adventure training schools have been teaching riders to stand all the time, but haven't been teaching them when NOT to stand, so now they stand, even when lane splitting or riding around town

Another is that professional off road training is the BEST farkle you'll ever buy. I've learned (and unlearned) a great deal from this. Lastly, waddling with hard panniers is asking for TROUBLE. Leave your panniers at home if you can or get soft panniers if you ride off road a lot. Just my $0.02.

    Hi Fred Gassit's, see aehy've only got basic experience in dirt bikes and you know it there's things that if you're going fast enough you'll bounce over them and things that stop you, going into gear carrying dirt bikes means lifting said dirt bikes over logs so look at the 125cc it's light and if you're into kick start get kick/electric because when you're on a hill you can use electric start.

    I actually hurt my knee, badly while waddling in stuff I should have been standing in. Standing is the standard and especially keeping the ball of the feet on the peg's on the nasty stuff so you keep traction in the rear and keep your toes out of the way of things that could potentially catch your feet otherwise.

    Its more try out what help on your personnel riding style.i have done some critical obstacles "deep gravel with some bigger rocks between " way easyer sitting than standing and i try it many times to test what works for me. I sit most time and stand up if it necessary at thougher trials like obstacles or high speed or jumps..Its like kick start or electric start (sitting or standing) electric start can save you so much energy for riding especialy in a competition. Try it out for yourself its not a "law" to stand any time. Watch FIM Enduro comp riders no one there stands any time only when its necessary they stand.But hey ,hurting is no fun for me ha ha!
