  • Shipping watches normally is not very risky. The loss rate of the big carriers like DHL is close to zero. But with some bad luck you may find your parcel empty, the watch stolen. Exactly this happens here.

    Last week, Stowa might have had an even worse week. I was shown a screenshot from their newsletter warning of stolen merchandise ... items from both current inventory and their museum (going back to the 1930s) were taken from the Engelsbrand facility. No mention of it on their site, however.

    There seems to be a rash of watch thefts in Germany this month. I just an email from Stowa claiming their production building was broken into.
    cut/paste excerpt from the email:
    "During the course of the night from Wednesday to Thursday our production building in Engelsbrand including the museum was broken into and numerous current watches, movements as well as historic (gold) watches from the 30`s until 70`s were stolen.
    The damage cannot yet be precisely quantified, but is probably in the high six-figure range. Even worse than the material value, is the ideal value of very seldom and historic Stowa watches, amongst them the historic Marine pocket watch.
    Please be cautious and do not purchase any current or historic Stowa watches without the original documents and packing"

    Hello, I'm glad to hear you did not have both watches stolen! Better than initially thought!
    Great review of the Alexander Shorokoff. I have never heard of them but I was stunned at the finishing of the watch for ~$1500 USD!

    as some one who has worked inthe the parcel industry its pretty easy to guess the contents of a package by its size and weight it becomes intuitive , also small packages can be hidden inside pockets and coats the lowlife then goes on a toilet break (were security cameras are not allowed ) opens it steals the contents reseals it then puts the empty package back in the system i would reccomend that you use a box half the size of a shoebox at the very least ' xmas is the worst time as casual labour is used and no vetting takes place

    I did post this under the other video too. Stowa also had a break in, historic and new watches with an estimated six figure valie got stolen too. They just sent out a newsletter about this, warning from buying used Stowa watches without Box and Paper or at least some form of authentification of its legality.

    Interesting watch that Shorokhoff.
    It's a bad time when we can't trust the mail.
    I temped for Royal Mail (UK) a couple of times and they gave us a whole spiel about how, legally speaking, the mail belongs to the monarch while its in transit through the system (or something like that) and it's a huge crime (imprisonable offence) to interfere with it. It could have been a bunch of BS ('belonging to the monarch' - this was after the privatisation) I don't know but the point is, we were read the riot act so to speak. I wonder if DHL and the rest are as dilligent?
    Thank God one of them that got through at least.
    I cannot believe DHL doesn't offer insurance! And I cannot believe they proceeded with the transaction without the ability to give you a receipt! I'm always a bit shocked when Germany is found wanting. 🙂
    Anyway, hope your weekend is better than your week.

    Plenty of stories of Post couriers stealing packages for this Christmas season.
    I know 2 stories, mostly cause door drop- off was selected. In one case the guy opened the door around 1 minute after the guy ringed the door, to see the courier get in the car and leave quickly. Called Hermes support (the very minute he opened the door, to hold the line for 20 minutes) , and the first one told him it must be a mistake and that they contacted the courier and it will be delivered the next day (it wasn't ) , the second one told him directly it's his fault and there's nothing to do, 'nothing to do' as in 'you have it and just want a refund' . Only the third (1 day later) registered a complaint, and told him there was nothing in the system from the previous two. The company that sold him the stuff told him 'no refund, that is the risk' .
    All Couriers hire seasonal workers for Holidays, and apparently German ones went like Wagner, to search for them in prisons, but Hermes seems to also have their customer support complicit.

With 25 pieces made and a thief probably unaware of the workings of the watch world it may pop up ahortly on ebay or on Kleinanzeigen. As I am looking for a Nivada anyway I will keep my eyes peeled…

    I was very relieved there have not been two thefts but I still feel for you and the stress it has all caused. May be worth considering the insurance in the future. Like you I find the Shokoroffs typically appreciable yet too busy or simply too outlandish. This is classy and yet I'm still not sure it would be for me, but I'd like to try a Shorokhoff in the future. I have a feeling in the metal it might win me over.

    A very interesting watch . Very attractive . I have lookred at it for a bit. I see of course the batman thing. It has a very 60's ethic derivative but unique .
    But all pointless as it is sold out as the maker must have expected . 25 pieces . Income E30,000. Why ? I dont understand the economics of these releases. Maybe it is not about seling these watches but about building a brand so can sell more of another of their watches. I do not understand that strategy either.
    You made a classic sell it in its hundreds and maybe thousands.
    Excellent video as always Tim. Excellent watch but in my opinion a seriously compromised company . Richard
    Amended : Sometimes I come across as a complete Grouch. So what am I missing? A watch company releases an extrordinarily interesting watch at a price that his high ( for many ) but attainable also ( for many ) but no one can buy it. Why bother?
    Second Ammendment . It's like a kid turning up at school showing his or her class mates their school bag packed full of delicious sweets and saying not for you and wondering how at break time they ended up face down in the toilet with a turkish delight stuck up their jaksie !
    Third amendment. Keep the faith Tim . Keep on keeping on.

  • @almeladze
    @almeladze Před rokem +1

    So at the beginning of the video you said watches cant be insured under a certain price. Then you said that you didnt pay for insurance because it would have cost extra 30 euros. So is it possible to insure watches or not? Or was it because the 2nd watch was over 100o euros?

    • @CasebackWatches
      @CasebackWatches  Před rokem

      With DHL you cannot send a watch over 500 Euros. With special carriers you can, but they charge about 30 to 35 Euros within Germany.

    • @almeladze
      @almeladze Před rokem +2

      @@CasebackWatches I see. thnx for explaining. One would think that DHL is the most trustworthy carrier and should offer all kinds of services to their customers considering how much they charge. But then again, they are a subsidiary of German Post so flexibility certainly isnt in their DNA LOL Anyway, I am really sorry for what happened to you Tim. I hope you will find the watch or get justice one way or another because insured or not, the carrier is responsible for the safe delivery of the package. BTW, have you thought about filing a lawsuit for conversion against DHL? Of course, insurance would be faster, but at the end of the day, you may be able to recover the cost of the stolen item through civil liability. If theft happened while the watch was in their custody they will have to admit this or claim that they lost it. Neither is a good situation for them. They may be willing to settle to keep this out of the public domain, etc. Good luck!
