On this day in 1961 {April 12th} Freddy Cannon performed "Buzz-Buzz-a-Diddle-It" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Nineteen days later on May 1st it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #51 and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... Between 1959 and 1966 he had twenty-one Top 100 records; three of them made the Top 10 with "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" {1959} and "Palisades Park" {1962} being his biggest hits, both reached #3 on the Top 100...
freddie cannon was a true rock n roller, never sung anything but rock n roll.had the pleasure of hanging around with him,for about a year or so.good person, girls loved him, mild mannered, and we lost touch, and he went on to live his dream.he's gone now,i should have gone to see him when he came back home.R.I.P. BUDDY.GEORGE/ELVIS.
I read that "Hollywood A Go-Go" was produced at the KHJ-TV studios in Los Angeles from 1964 until 1966. It was hosted by Sam Riddle, with music by The Sinners and dancing by The Gazzarri Dancers. So how-come Freddy Cannon was on that show with a record he'd charted in 1961 ? Now I like the record a lot, but to this Brit it seems odd. I guess was it helped by Freddy's good relationship with Dick Clark, who had moved his American Bandstand show to L.A. in 1964 - Freddy holds the record for most appearances on Bandstand, at 110 ?
"Hollywood A Go-Go" was a one hour weekly produced show straight out of LA. EVERYONE in the business was a part of this Sunset-strip style musical show and superstar FREDDY CANNON was simply one of the many artists who appeared on the show. Lining up an array of stars from week to week was quite a feat for the show. FREDDY was a fan favorite in musical circles since in the late 1950s and by the time this show was on, he was quite a staple. Notice the high energy displayed by the kids with Freddy's presence on the set that day dancing to "Buzz Buzz"....A similar frenzy was felt when 50s superstar, Frankie Lymon appeared as well. They couldn't get enough! And yes, FREDDY was quite a regular on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand".
