  • A quick day camp featuring the Jääkäri Püükko and Särmä TST Thermal Cloak from Varusteleka. My outdoor clothing is the Gorka 4 from Russian Cold Camo. I make a quick tarp plow point shelter with the Sarma TST Thermal Cloak and use the Jaakari Püükko to carve some tent stakes, make feather sticks and start a small fire in my camp stove to boil my white pine tea. This tea is excellent. It is warm, refreshing and a wonderful source of vitamin C.

    Very nice, Jess.
    I have the same knife and the left hand dangler sheath. It's easy to put a very sharp edge on it yet it holds its sharpness well, and the handle is comfortable for extended use. I've used mine to field dress and skin one deer, and process about half the meat from another. It also cleans up easily because of the rubber handle. It's one of the best values in a bushcraft/hunting knife IMO and better for real use than most tactical knives.

      Thanks Dave. My thoughts as well. Very solid blade for the money. Really like the steel. Do a lot of work with it before needing stropped up.

      I have both the smallest and the intermediate size puukko...that one seems to be the 14 cm size blade.
      Although I bought the 11 cm with the leather sheath, I later added the special plastic one (which I prefer)
      The small puukko (8,5 cm) is adequate for most tasks, and I bought it with the plastic sheath that works very well.

    Hi I like that you checked the wind direction, NB even though you checked your site's wind direction its always good to also check the prevailing wind for your target area before leaving home. I am from Ontario, Canada North of the Great lakes, did a lot of bush camping in my youth.

      I am 60 yrs old now, most of my experience of solo back bush camping was 30 to 40 yrs ago in North of Espanola in the hills country walking back trails to isolated lakes. Walk in setup go fishing, or small game hunting ( rabbit or partridge) , sleep over , do a little more , then walk back out. First time got scared in the early evening thought it felt like being stalked by a Couger (even though I new most Bush predators avoid ppls unless starving do to sickness or injuries , I generally respect their space , they leave me alone.) , stayed up all night , kept the fire going, back was to the fire, had a tiki tourch on a pole off to my left , and paid close attention to the best approaches, put a single shotgun round fired into the ground every 1 hr or so, and walked back out first daylight :) I don't have anywhere as much experience as you or Shawn.

      @@482Brisbane369 I can relate to that. I have had a few long nights. Lot of stick snapping and that uneasy pressure. Usually starts when I turn phone off (camera). Strangely, its gotten easier to deal with, but definitely nothing I ever planned on or set out to find.

    Hi Jess ..
    Nice 👍.
    A Winter Walk in the Forest is for me, a Spirit Booster and a hot mug of Tea with something to nibble, a bonus. No Pine Needle Tea though .. no Pine in my surrounding forest, so I settle for store-bought 'Fruit Teas'.
    Swiss Forests are pretty well organised and maintained with lots of walk-ways, paths, benches to sit on and 'stategically-placed' 'Braai' Areas with Fire Pits / Bowls, Seating and even open-sided Huts looking onto the Cooking Area .. (Braai = South African-Speak for Barbeque .. one of our National Pastimes). Often, wood is supplied by the 'Forstamt' / Council at said Braai Spots. That said, the forests can get quite busy over weekends .. hence my preference for week days and the colder months. Even sitting on a bench watching the world go by (or not), enjoying a cuppa brewed up over an Alcohol White Box Stove is 👍. NB .. not 'Aqualunging' on a park bench 😏.
    That Jääkäripuukko is a great-value Budget Blade. I have the 140 version. I find the 140 easier to use when splitting wood (yes, I do 'baton' .. I am shamed 😔 .. only lightly though 😁). It gives more leverage on both sides of the blade and even the pressure from a gloved hand can be sufficient to push the blade down through the wood. A shorter blade .. the thought of hammering down close to a blade tip makes my toes curl!
    That's enough useless information from me. Thanks Jess for sharing .. take care .. Tommy.

      Its pretty cold today, -10F. Knife is solid. Does all the things and feels good in the hand. The only thing I would like to see on it is a 90deg spine. It has 45 deg bevels to accommodate the differential heat treatment. Have a good one my friend

      Its really nice. Has a citrusy taste and is a good source of vitamin C. There is a particular compound in the bark, name is escaping me, but it is excellent for colds. I hear its good for the “super” cold as well. 9F is definitely chilly. Stay warm my friend!

    Hey man always love the vids , we’re in for another snow event here in Ky today , I have a question not a critique, when doing a plow point why doesn’t anyone use cordage from tree to ground to support tarp and then two small pieces to secure it to stake and tree , ? It’s something I do it seems to keep center of tarp up and tight w out all the tension on tarp and stretch , just asking

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Don! I am not sure really why others don’t, but for me its to avoid friction on the undersides of my tarps. Like this one with the mylar, it would cause a wear spot eventually. Stay warm down there. Its cooling off up here, too. -10F plus the wind.

    Another excellent video! What do you think about the Jaakaripuuko? I have the 110 and it’s about perfect for a general use IMO but unfortunately mine came with an asymmetrical grind. I have the Slrama 240 as well it is perfection.

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! I really like it as a utility bush knife. The only thing I would have preferred to see on it is a 90 degree spine for tinder processing and striking a ferro rod. I usually have a silky saw with me, which does those things very well, so between the two I am good. But it is nice to have a 90.

      @@EnduranceRoom I totally agree on the spine. The way they ground the spine to expose the harder, inner steel is very intelligent but it lacks the bite you get with a 90*. Where did you get the kydex sheath for yours? I need something exactly like that for my webbing?

      Hi! It is called a SOLO Stove Lite and should be available on ebay, amazon, or the solostove website directly. Its nice and efficient. Boils fast, is fuel efficient, but you do have to feed it pretty steady to keep it going.
