I have been looking for a cute little half doily to make a Carolina lady doily (cant find a pattern) this looks to be perfect. Thank you for posting, I enjoyed making the fan with you ❤
It looks like a pattern out of American Thread company book/magazine
Every time I see your vintage crotchet on my youtube feed I have to click on it..❤❤❤
My gran made one similar in 1976 to attach onto my wedding bouquet. She heavily starched it so I could use it as a fan. Brought back memories.
I'm never going to have time to do all these beautiful projects you keep showing us!!!! Gorgeous, don't stop!
Thank you so much! and I won't lol :)
This would make a beautiful shawl if one could figure out how to keep increasing until a good size for a shawl and use a lightweight yarn.❤
Check out crochet pineapple shawls as there may be one that's similar.
there is nice and easy pineapple shawl on raverly and free pattern !@@elliesr
I think if you used a 4 weight yarn and maybe a an h or I hook, it would be much bigger!
I thought the exact same thing! It's so stunning... 😊
Great idea
I've just finished rereading The Anne of Green Gables series, and thought you'd appreciate this little gem.
"Susan, unbowed by the culinary cares that were heaped upon her, stalked about, showing the ladies to the guest-room, serene in the knowledge that not one of them possessed an apron trimmed with crochet lace five inches deep made from Number One Hundred thread. Susan had captured first prize at the Charlottetown exhibition the week before with that lace."
- excerpt from Anne of Ingleside (Anne of Green Gables, book 6), chapter 32; Susan is Anne's housekeeper, and the ladies in question are arriving for a quilting bee
Keep up the great work!
Oh my, now I want to reread the Anne of Green Gables series!
I adore the Anne of green gables series. I love your excerpt 🥰
I love this, my wedding bouquet in 1977 was a Victorian fan with roses.
I recently found you and I love watching and crocheting along with you. You’re the Bob Ross of crochet. Thanks for all that you do!😊
I am going to make this .well two of them one with out the handle peace. Hi Corrina, I’ve been watching your Just Vintage Crochet channel since the beginning; love it! It got me into trying my hand at crochet and I went to a few classes to get me started. THANK YOU for calling out the pineapple stitch for what it is- the pine cone stitch! It just didn’t make sense to me that it was called pineapple stitch when it clearly looks like a pine cone! I always enjoy watching your spin on all these vintage patterns and how you explain the UK to US conversion!
I just do love all you crochet and I appreciate all the tutorials thank you so so very much.
Corrina, I just want to say that you're a complete delight to listen to. I can hear through your voice how much you enjoy doing this and I often just have one of your random videos on while I crochet my own projects because you're so fun to listen to. I, at least, was in no way annoyed by hearing you call it a "nubbin"! And I agree; it looks like a pinecone.
Thank you for these videos.
I just love it😊 your sewing, starching and hot glueing are perfect. I love how you were able to show that you don't need all the fancy extras to be able to pin. You are amazing. Many blessings to you and your family Corinna🙏💜🙏😊
Thank you so much!
Doilies are my favorite things to make. I have been making them for over 55 years. Glad you are sharing some lovely additions!
This is the first doily I've ever made. I'm usually a knitter, but this pattern is so gorgeous I had to drop everything and make it! Unfortunately the thread I had in my stash was unlabled and I think it's a little too thick, but it still turned out lovely, just not as fine and detailed. I'll just have to make a few more with the right sized thread!
Love that you showed us your glue trick. I’ve never blocked anything, but i feel like i get the idea now. Beautiful! Thank you!
I have used Elmer's Glue for years to stiffen and block my crochet snowflakes. Last year I used glow-in-the-dark glue for my grandkids. Bonus, Elmer's doesn't mold or mildew over time as starch does and it helps block stains when an idiot dumps wine on your work.
Wow! This is absolutely amazing. So good. I can not work with small needles and yarn . I give u kudos 👏 you're a great artist
I made this for a Cultural Arts exhibit for my area Kentucky Home Extension club (Homemakers) and won first place in the category. Thanks so much for your clear instructions and a beautiful pattern.
It's not and never was 'her' pattern.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of art with love and sharing your ideas and explain so well

Thanks for the video. I didn't even need to purchase the pattern.
I'm making this in red because I have red. It's fantastic. I now officially call those little loops "nubbins". I'm writing down the pattern for the next rows and I write out 3 chain nubbin the first time, then 3nb. Thank you for helping me evolve in my craft 😄. I also call them pinecones. Pineapples are taller and rounder. So I call those pc. Also hate loose stitches.
Ahh!! Just had an awesome idea. I see how you had to add stitches to the long end of the handle and how it started to spiral - I love that! I'm going to alter the handle a bit.. I'll do one 15sc loop, then make the rest one long loop and keep jamming them doubles on there until we're looking like DNA. That looks so pretty and elegant and like it actually took effort but didn't
I have been so sick today and your beautiful doily made my day so much better. This is so pretty. And I see it as a pinecone too!
This is how I finish my doilies as well, with glue, water, cardboard, and pins. This fan doily turned out really cute!
This is breathtaking ♥ The glue and water is a good tip! I really love your channel ♥
Thank you so much!
Very interesting pattern! I have been crocheting for years and I have never seen anything like this one. Thanks you for sharing this with us ❤
I just finished the little pinecone fan and I absolutely love it! What a beautiful and fun project ❤
My brain is already working in what this can be turned into, maybe a necklace or a neckline on a shirt. Or just an aplication on something. I really like the shape. Again a lot possibilities. Thank you so much for sharing. I said this before, I am so happy I found your channel.
Pargement paper or backing paper could be a good alternative for the bags (reusable), cornstarge solved in water makes also a good stiffner on a budget.
You've outdone yourself... again! This turned out beautifully! I laughed so hard at your basting doilys joke, too. Thanks for uploading!
Thank you so much!
I absolutely love your channel! Your projects are stunning. I love to listen to your words and voice. 😊
I already made a pair of cuffs you showed and yesterday I began the Titanic reticule (both in black, very difficult to see, I used very thin garn and 1,5 mm hook 🧐). Now I have to grab another hook 1,5 mm hook tomorrow to crochet this fan alongside all the other projects. It's beautiful! Thank you very much!
Beautiful Work !!! You need to frame it with a Black or Dark Blue Background !!! My Mom had my Great Great Grandmother's Crocheted Gloves framed, and it's Gorgeous !❤
I've been watching your channel for a while and love the very old patterns you do. I did do this fan and it's beautiful ! Thank you for sharing with us, I know it takes a lot of your time but it's much appreciated. I have a little tip to save from using your baggies. After we finish a box of cereal I save the inside plastic. Pull all the seam carefully, wash, dry and you have a good size non stick surface for your blocking and starch . Thanks again !
I love this..bit as a beginner it's way too advanced..lol..but your instructions are very clear...I just feel I am not ready..
You're not alone. I've always thought the same thing, guessing that perhaps the person who first referred to it as a "pineapple" and not "pinecone" was just mistaken about the wording. It's so pretty! Thank you for another great pattern! Hugs
Exactly!! lol
@@justvintagecrochet btw "nubbins" is a perfect description, and check out Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar's video called "Mosaic Stars." (Google "Tinna stars" & it should be the first result. At about one hour 36 she shows how she bastes and pins her stars. Pretty much an exact method as yours!
1st... Nubbins is what I thought to myself before you said it, so nubbins they are!
2nd... Loved the glue and water! I hadn't heard of that before and what a great idea! Thank you!
Last, but absolutely not least! The fan is amazing! I have a baby blanket I have to get done and then, it's time to make a fan! ♥️♥️♥️
🙌🙌🙌 YOU ARE AMAZING! I am so thankful for you! You bring me so much joy!!!
THANK YOU!!!😘♥️🧶
thank you so much :)
Oh, that is SO pretty! I know that I say that for every project, but it's _always true!_
"Nubbins" is fine-seems like an accurate description to me. "Pinecones" is fine-in fact, the the 17th century word was coined because of the fruit's resemblance to a pine cone.
As you were working on it, I wondered if it could be worked all the way in the round to make a round doily. Then I wondered what other round doilies could be worked back and forth to make a fan.
No wonder I enjoy your videos so much!
I love this fan. Would like to follow this pattern use a cotton yarn, skip the handle, & make a rug. This may or may not work out.
Row 14 kind of blows my mind 🤯. I’m so glad you are there to do a visual for us.
i wonder if you could do a super heavy starch and make it actually function as a fan
Wow! Absolutely stunning 😍
This would make a lovely wedding gift for the bride done in white with blue flowers
You can also use a liquid starch solution to make it stiffer but I to love it. It’s next on the list to make lol
Love your work! I am making this right now. Will post a picture once I am done. Thank you for sharing this!😊
Hello from Austria! I have some awesome doily - pattern from the 70s to the 80s from my mother. Would like to share them with you but - they are in German. Maybe I will translate some and send it to you! You make such great work. Love to watch all of your videos! Thanks!
Aww it is beautiful! Loved this so much, and the tip with the glue is well worth remembering. Thank you for all you do. Best Wishes x
Pinecones were called pineapples in the past, so you're not wrong in the pineapple stitch looking like pinecones to you ^^ at some point in history some English speaking man came along who thought the tropical fruit looked like what we call today a pinecone and that's history. Since pineapple was now used for two things people probably got confused and we ended up with the terms we have today.
The fan looks absolutely stunning by the way, I need to acquire some thinner cotton threads and make one for myself. It looks so fun.
Love nubbins it's perfect description
Could be both. You can make so many beautiful things
I am lubbin the word nubbin, so much, I just subscribed and rang your bell!
I really like this, it looks like so much fun to make, I love your work.
Thanks so much 😊
I just finised blocking but i added 2 extra flowers one above the other two pineapples😊i really love it
I love the glue and water idea and pinning to cardboard - bravo! This fan is beautiful! ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
My Mama used to make beautiful lacework like this, in the 70s. I think I will give this a go.
Hi from wales uk, you could also add sequins in the centre of the flowers if you don’t have beads, love walking along with you
This is so, so gorgeous! I love the natural with the white flowers. It's so elegant and lovely! I definitely want to try making this, so I'll have to figure out where I can acquire some crochet thread around where I live. Love the glue and water tip, too! I've never starched anything before, so it's good to have a simple, low-budget method. I wonder if something like boiled-potato water would work too. It gets pretty starchy, so it could be interesting to try. Of course, I don't know if that would attract critters... Anyway, thank you for the amazing tutorial! Love your channel and all the amazing pieces you're making! 💖
Aqua Fava maybe? Aqua Fava is the liquid that canned beans come in, and also can be used as an egg white substitute (you can make it into meringue!)
That's pretty for bed quilt edge or curtain edge bottom.
I love pineapple motif and fans, so I find this project GORGEOUS ❤❤❤ Thank you! Your work is amazing 😊🌹
It is beautiful and showing others how to improvise with lesser materials is great as i am a penny pincher. Thanks Corinna ❤
Gorgeous. Pine cone for me. Pineapple has always been a stretch for me.
Hermoso trabajo Artístico Felicitaciónes Profesora. Gracias por compartir tu talento. Cordial saludo Desde COLOMBIA 🌹
I LOVE THIS! You continue to inspire me to crochet. Also, I completely agree with you about the pineapples looking like pinecones.
Yay! Thank you!
I vote for calling it nubbin. Also, this came out so pretty! Thank you for teaching us this 🙏🏽💗
That's slang in some places for cIitoris and I can't stop giggling.😂 I'm so glad my mother isn't here while I crochet to this video.
You can always use grocery store plastic bag, or kitchen garbage can plastic bags vs several stirage bags. Cornstarch and water will also work for stiffening agent, however most people do seem to have Elmer's which is very convenient.
Love the "nubbin", please don't change it.
This doily should go in a frame. One of the prettiest Ive seen
Ironing with steam will help with getting the doily to lay flat too. Also if you flip it over & "baste" the back side of it will make it more stiff. If you also use wood glue & water that will make it really stiff. Just something I learned making leaves for fabric corn.
Lovely lovely lovely… agree definitely need this in my life 😊 pineapple, pine cone.. the birth of a pine cone took me to time my little ones tried putting a real pineapple in the Incubator for chicks trying to hatch SpongeBob, his house and his friends…😂 I would have crocheted them this lovely fan as a housewarming gift. Appreciate all you do. 🧡
This is absolutely 100% the type of project you stop everything to make and so I have. This is also my very first doily. I have had to unravel a row or two a few times but I am now on the handle. I am so excited to finish this project. It will also be my first time blocking so we shall see!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I can’t wait to see this! Ooooo
You always have the prettiest patterns!! ❤
Pine cones and nubbins are good with me!😂 This is beautiful!❤
I have absolutely been binging almost your entire channel whilst working on a crochet lace project.
You make such excellent company!
Thank you
It's beautiful. So pretty. I tried making a few of the flowers but I haven't crocheted in years. I have a big bag of yarn I was going drop off at salvation Army or Goodwill like I did with about 5 huge clear yard waste bags already. I did keep back some yarn I loved and all my crochet thread. I went to look thru it but I can't seem to find or where I stored these favored yarns. I just dug thru the bag and just picked 3 of the smallest yarns size I had left. I also had dozens of hooks but when I went to look, all that's left are about 5 or 6 and the smallest size hook I could find in my left over in my stash. It was a 5mm. I tried to make the flowers but with the big hook and weird yarn, I kept slipping in the middle of threads. Anyway with the awful yarn I picked and the large hook it was a lost cause. They look so basic and pretty but with the splitty yarn and incorrect hook size I just gave up. Maybe I'll dig thru what's left and find yarn appropriate for a 5mm hook and try again, but not today. I'm too frustrated.
I’ll be waiting breathlessly by the mailbox for this 🥹😍🙈
You got it! :)
I made this. I'll make more love it. Thank you❤
You can call it a nubbin as long as you've defined your terms so we all know.
I like it ! I am so glad to know I am not the only one who uses these techniques. I also use the starch from rice , potatoes, and pasta. Even corn starch will work. Why buy fancy products when you have similar items at your fingertips. ❤ 😊
Nubbin is the most adorable word in English. I adore it. Thats what I call these now. Picots are a bit different, with the slip stitch. I am calling these nubbins now. What do yoou call the almond-shaped loops made with a chain and then yarn over tall stitch? I call them almonds.
I can't believe I made this. My fan ID white. I can't decide on red or purple flowers. Thank you for the video. I love this!
It's sooo pretty! When you hung it in the wall, it actually reminded me of a stingray! Maybe if I place some googly eyes in it and create other motifs then have it mounted and framed, it can create an interesting underwater themed crochet art piece.
Gracias su explicación es muy buena ,a pesar que tomo mucha atención a su clase gracias desde quito ecuador emma❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
I hope to make this for my daughter, when goes to wedding parties.
Botanical fun fact: pineapples are named because they resemble a pine cone. The fact that the pattern looks like a pine cone to you is totally correct botanically speaking.
❤ great job! I referred to the pineapples as pinecone too. Everyone would put me in correction corner...PINEAPPLE. lol
I haven’t read other comments but I prefer ‘nubbin’ ‘ to sc chain 3 sc over and over and over. This pattern really uses a ton of nubbins’ lol. Great video and explanation of all stitches. Thank you!
It looks beautiful! I havent tried it myself yet but startching with sugar is another budget solution if you want it super stiff
Your stiffening method looks awesome, and I bet, if I put some grape juice in, I could dye my bookmarks purple. Adorable doilie. I never heard of stiffening a doilie, but it came out brilliant! I loved this video.
Beautiful! My brain randomly wants to make three or four of these and see if I can Frankenstein them together into a bag
Beautiful. Thank you : )
This came as a gift send from God!❤ I'm working on the peacock and I waiting for yarn to arrive. I have 3 days off so I have the time to make this. I'm going to use my own "glue" to stiff it. Cheap and effective for thing like this😊
Beautiful. Can't wait to try it
Oh you keep spoiling us Corinna with these beautiful, stunning patterns from yester years! I just love you and your channel! 😊 X ps your so clever, i really appreciate the glue idea for starching! As I'm also on a budget! 👍❤
Oh thank you!
I made several of these in different shades of purples for my Daughters 40th birthday. I put some on the main table and several others throughout the house. On some I did not stiffen, just wet, block and ironed with spray heavy starch. II used those for coasters. Beautiful. Love your channel . Thank you for the upload
Absolutely gorgeous! Yes! Looks more like a pine cone than a pineapple to me. I can't wait to try it. Thank you!😊
I love watching your videos. I would have never thought that I would enjoy crocheting with such a fine hook and thread, but I absolutely loved following along with you. Thank you for sharing this pattern and helping me discover something new that I love crocheting.
I wish we could give you a round of applause...this is truly amazing! I would have suggested spray starch and an iron, given that you're working with cotton, but I don't know if they make spray starch for ironing anymore (Mom always had a can in the house that was never used). And who wasn't hit with the aroma of the Elmer's as soon as they saw the bottle? That aroma is arguably one of the best parts of my childhood (don't judge me, either lol). One last thing: you're going to need to make a few more to use them as wall hangings, in my opinion. Not too many, though, you want the wall paint to be prominent. Maybe make the fans in various colors? Now I'm thinking about my walls...actually, without the handle, this would be great for the couch, and I have tons of worsted weight yarn...if you'll excuse me...
This is beautiful. If you want to display it you could pin it in a box frame with a dark background. It would look amazing on your wall!
Mix corn starch with water, iron until dry to stiffen fabric. Cheapest way I know.
In my mind’s eye I am seeing this in one of the Family Circle’s big holiday craft books. You may be too young to remember Family Circle magazine and their big books of curated recipes and crafts they would publish every year. I certainly remember my mother, her mother and I making a gazillion of these same fans in miniature to be used as tree ornaments one year. They were probably about four inches by three inches and decorated with red, green, silver and gold beads and ribbons. I have a very faded Polaroid photo showing a bit of that tree in the background. I’m about eight or nine there, so it’d be around 1966 to ‘68-ish? Before my youngest brother was born December of 1969 anyway. You can’t really see the details of those fan decorations in that photo. Those types of instant photos fade very badly over time. But I can see enough to jog my memory of what they were. The theme for Mom’s holiday decor that year was something that made her want a tree covered in crocheted lace ornaments. We also had crocheted bells, poinsettias, tiny hats, candles, snowflakes. I bet between the three of us we made over a hundred of those little things for the tree, wreaths, garlands, and such. Even the angel was crocheted.
Do people still adopt themes for their holiday decor?
Anyway, while I can’t swear to it I’d bet money this fan pattern appears in one of those magazine craft compendiums. Seems like they were very popular in the 60s and 70s.
It is my feeling vintage patterns rarely don't make one want to drop everything and do it. They just have so much style and are made in exquisitely fine threads! I am currently finishing a call the midwife blanket, because I just had to make it❤
Soooo beautiful
Halfway....row 11... Would help to. Text which row you're on thruout on the screen...also to use markers on the end of the 4 at bottom....then I don't forget to turn ...I let my thread hang over edge of table... doesn't bother you at all....put ball in a box on floor....
Love ❤ this project....😊. TY...
WHERE DID YOU FIND IT...??
I used to avoid pineapples. But now I see how easy they can be....
Great directions...thnx for showing every step...love your humor... 😜and thoughts to keep me pressing on....nice voice too...📣
I love your nubbin word...I find it delightfully fun😊
