I don't think hyper casual games are ruining gaming as a whole, but I do feel like they're ruining mobile gaming. These games just by existing in the hundreds if not thousands at this point set the standard of "having ads everywhere" making these games really really annoying, and I hope people getting into this hobby don't think this is normal, especially paying $5 a WEEK just to disable ads.
I agree! I have found amazing little gems of mobile games over the years, indie games crafted with so much love and care. But nowadays the Stores are so full of this trash that finding good stuff is becoming harder and harder
As somebody that got their first smartphone in 2014, I literally was the early teen that was amazed by mobile games, just to have the worst of the storages and finding myself playing emulators in my phone, as these were very storage efficient, as you could store ROMs in a SD card, something most apps weren't able to do. Now I have a relatively good phone and I couldn't care less, still playing emulators and having like 2 mobile games.
they bloat the app store and play store so much it can be really hard to find the good games anymore
There's no such thing as something that ISN'T a "Hyper Casual" popular game on Mobile at this point
@@ALocalMaid Apex legends mobile exists tho
I think one of the biggest things that bug me about hyper-casual games is how they seem to prey on children or just the young and naive. Using characters that are popular among children (Friday Night Funkin, Poppy's Playtime, Among Us, etc...) really sort of cement that fact. I think of everything going on with Elsagate from a few years back, and how people got in a lot of trouble for using kids characters in disturbing or sexual scenes, which is what advertisements for these types of games do. It makes me sad that children are being used in this way, since a child is going to sit through the ads these games have or they made ask parents for money on these games. There's a few games I've seen that have those really misleading adds, but are still fun one is for a game called Super Stylist. It's not difficult, there's a lot of ways it tries to make you buy money, but I have fun with the fashion since it reminds me of a poorly made style savvy. It feels like slightly more effort was involved, is what I think I'm trying to say.
I couldn't have said it any better👏👏👏
Hyper casual games should stop PERMANENTLY
This is also the parents fault kids that are not over 12 shouldnt be using a phone 🤦🤦🤦🤦🚴🚵🤼🤼🧟
Kids should be playing Lego Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy
@@dbone_ Im 11 and a half and i havent fallen for these stupid games since i was 9 xD
Also isn’t this technically child exploitation, which is very serious?
It would be interesting to see one of these games developed with more thought, I remember the gamedev CZcamsr Jonas Tyroller did a 'develop 50 games in one day' challenge and referred to one of them as 'hypercasual', but in a somewhat different context. Also, I feel that they are a genre, it's no more vague than the definition for roguelikes, if not less so.
Not really? All roguelikes have a common feature that is actually important to the way they play and that ties them together, that feature is pretty specific and having it is what makes a game part of the gemre, the only thing hyper casual games have in common is being extremely easy and watered down to attract a bigger audience, namely kids, that is, as said in the video, just a difficulty setting
A ton of videogame genres are inherently vague, are CoD and Halo shooters? Yes ofc, now is Portal a shooter? Is The Binding of Isaac a shooter? Is Ark: Survival Evolved a shooter?
@@azurabbit12 Did you watch the video I mentioned before this essay in necromancy
I miss the days of Angry birds, Cut the Rope, PVZ, etc. I don’t want these crappy Voodoo games and stuff like that. Tall man run, nah. Cut the Rope Time Travel? Hell Yeah 😎

"*sigh* Thanks, Flappy Bird"
I'm all in for using Flappy Bird as the scapegoat for why mobile games are so shit these days
The dev made the game in a day to see if it was possible and eventually took the game down because he couldn't handle the constant attention the game brought him. The discovery of the hypercasual game was an accident.
@@connordarvall8482 Poor guy. He created a monster
@@connordarvall8482 didn’t he also take it down because some kid killed his brother over not letting him play it?
@@Commrade-DOGE Hahaha that's a rumor. Too lazy to google it rn, but I remember a rumor going around that he took it down because the game ruined his own life because of it's addictiveness
Good to hear about the new ad policy they are bringing in. I have kids who often download some of these games. The ads are much more a concern than the actual game content, there's times when there were one for stuff like erectile dysfunction. I'll often go through the tablet to delete a few games, but due to them being so small, they get quickly installed again when I'm not looking
I have gotten ads that were, no joke and no exaggeration, depicting BDSM with no censure and that was *before* people starting trying to one-up each other with shock-factor advertising.
I think, if your kids are young enough, the best bet would be to allow only the games that are able to be played offline and then disable the wifi/mobile data on the device
I had a CZcams ad for a game called isekei demon waifu in family friendly videos and yikes...
@@CharaChocolateButtercup of course u did its yt's double-standard
@@NatLaS One that I at least only saw once, probably because I reported so stopped showing to me, was one that you save a little girl and the ad asks if you want to train her to be part of your harem or your army
@@clyde-or-monty Yeah :/ it was so disgusting tbh the ads were just sexualizing woman and now I use a ad blocker so I won't have to see this disgusting ad again
"Some of these ads seem to glorify objectifying woman" hmmm, where have I seen this before? Oh yes, in the Simpsons. Specifically season 5 episode 14, Lisa vs Malibu Stacy. This episode contains Lisa being appalled by the sexism in her Malibu Stacy doll. She is concerned about how children are being taught to act like an awful stereotype and only care about looking pretty and marrying a rich guy. Very similar. Children are being taught to act like these mobile game characters. Truly, truly awful.
This comment confuses me.
You don’t need to compare it to something else. The example you gave is literally the exact same thing, so it’s not a metaphor.
what? how are kids being taught to act like mobile game characters?
@@wool578 I think it's the "copy what you see" mentality children tend to have? Idk, this is kinda confusing
@@mauricioalvarezpino1818 I think they were being pretty straightforward.
Kids imitate what they see, hell, you have your proof right there if you see all of those idiotic tiktok challenges.
Honestly the only modern day hyper casual game I like is flying gorilla because even in the ads you can tell it doesn't take itself seriously at all, and I mean its not even that bad lol
It's not a hyper casual game, it has mechanics like the fever thing (if you eat enough bananas) and the game slowly getting faster, it also has obstacles like stones and chicks and the game is fast so you have little time to think. It has music too. Hyper casual runner games don't have that, you just run, collect money or whatever you're supposed to collect and you stumble upon these teleport things, green are the ones you should walk on and red are the ones you shouldn't walk on. Also the character is walking, so you have a lot of time to think. And they're mute and full of vibrations
I feel like Flying Gorilla is meant to be parody, but agreed
They used memes to get popular, it's a sneaky tactic to attract 13 year olds

I can’t WAIT to see how Google’s new guidelines will effects those types of games in the future. I’ve been desperately waiting for some regulations for these ads and Google might very well start the bandwagon, I hope
What exactly are these new guidelines?
@@evanchismark3092 They’re at the end of the video.
Google is gonna get paid by the ad creators to keep up the ads and games.
5:03 I wanted to add something real quick: most hyper-casual games are asset flips. They usually take unity store assets and mash them into a unity tutorial game.
How do I know that this is the case? Because I made one of these games for a game development class. Most of these games take unity tutorials and just add models to them. That’s why they look so stiff and basic: because these models and animations weren’t purpose built for the game their in.
Also, unity assets aren’t bad on their own but almost all of these games are mishmashes of tutorial code and unity asset store models.
Example: the forever cloned car crash games where you just go down a ramp

Crossy Road isn't bad honestly, its simple but there's at least some quality to it and it does take some skill to get far
Yeah it has ads and its not the best game ever but it's special to me and it's especially fun that it's an arcade game too so its always my go-to at arcades
I'd put it up there with Subway Surfers
I argue its a casual game since there is actual secret characters you can unlock in different ways
This was a good watch, and I’m glad someone is talking about it. At first, these games caught my eye but then I started seeing them everywhere and understanding the trap of them.
I remember seeing 1 maybe 3 but then a year later every add was one of these and I tried one and immediately understood why there's so many
I actually saw someone else cover the topic of mobile games (mainly HC) and showed a clip from a course about making these games. The guy who was talking actually said "one mistake I used to make was that I used to make my games too much about skill". The video also showed statistics that mobile games beat PC and console gaming in terms of money making (iirc)
The only value I really find in these games is making fun of them or playing them ironically when I feel like doing nothing but wasting time and turning my brain completely off. I don't have fun doing that more often than not, but it's arguably better than being left with nothing but my depressing thoughts. Usually I just play actual games to fill that void though.
15:27 My 5y/o sister used to play hypercasual games a lot. At the time when she was 4 , she almost bought "free ads" for just 499.99$ because she didn't knew what it meant nor she could read.
The problem is the predatory practices that not only hurt the people currently playing those games, but are also gradually infecting other games; "addictive" used to be hyperbole for something very enjoyable, now it's literally a warning about the dangers of some games.
I’m getting into mobile game development, and one game I’m thinking of is a parody of hyper casual games. I’m not sure what the game will play like, probably one of those runner games, but it will have more depth, polish, fun, and will also tell an interesting story. It will also have little to no ads.

One thing I absolutely hate about these games is how they see one game like vampire survivors and then make a mobile copy designed to make as much money with lootboxes and grinding. I constantly get ads for two vampire survivors rip offs which one literally stole all the abilities and just added a new coat of paint and added some fucking Zombies
YES. I see so many rip-offs of games made by indie developers too small to do anything. This also happened to taur.
When you consider just how potent of an emulator your smartphone can be, there is no excuse for the state of mobile gaming. I occasionally play something on my phone when I'm waiting, or just want to do something other than read. I've never seen a game I wanted to download from a mobile store that isn't just an emulator that will let me run something with actual gameplay, and story.

Angry Birds was my gateway. Chuck is my favorite angry bird.
What frustrates me the most about these "games", besides their extremely predatory and at times, inappropriate nature, is the fact that they're hogging spots on the app store charts that better, more deserving games should've gotten, besides the usual ~10-15 actual deserving games that are always near the top (Supercell games, the classics etc.), at the absolute least 70% of the games on the iOS top free games are hypercasual games. This has contributed massively to me moving away from mobile in general as games I might be willing to try otherwise are pushed off the charts so that I might never find them.
This in turn is also probably hurting smaller developers/games that actually want to make the best game(s) possible that might actually make mobile gaming better. Because of this spam of hypercasual games flooding the market, I'd actually be willing to go as far as to say that the mobile gaming landscape is in the worst state it's been in since I started playing mobile games in ~2010
I so wish there was a way to filter out these obnoxious apps.
Hyper casual actually ruined Mobile gaming

Something you forgot: 07:45 - Despite the fact that it is not standard in any other market, these mobile payment options to remove ads always show the WEEKLY subscription cost. The premium membership that you showed while talking about that would be a little over TWENTY DOLLARS per month. That means that making that ONE terrible app ad-free would cost more than Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, Curiosity Stream, Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Playstation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online, and the list goes on.
One of the only hypercasual games I actually like is ProgressBar95. At least that one has some actual effort put into it.
0:02 That one isn't too bad imo, I played the arcade version at Dave & Busters a couple of times. I found it fun and liked the pixel artstyle.
It was made before the need for hypercausal games to have ads everywhere I think
Short answer yes
I do know of a hypercasual game that is genuinely amazing. Progressbar95 had more love and care than I've ever seen in a mobile game. THAT is what mobile gaming should be, not the laughing stock of the gaming community.
Where can I get it.
@@guidedexplosiveprojectileg9943 It is a mobile game, isn't it? App store, Play store, whatever, it's free and the ads aren't all that intrusive, you might as well play a couple rounds. There's a shitton of secrets to find as well.
There's also a Steam version, but you have to pay for that one. Personally speaking, I do feel like some of the later operating systems were definitely made with PC in mind, the newer mechanics don't translate all that well to Touchscreen.

I’m watching a video.
Damm. Me too.

Nice
Wait, this isn't braille?
Is it hurting gaming? Yes, absolutely. But to say it's ruining gaming, I think it's a bit of a stretch. Main reason is because most major gaming companies are still making the same games they always have been. Sure, some companies, like Nintendo, try their hand at more casual gaming experiences, an example like Mario Run. But no major gaming company that I'm aware of has gone full throttle on Hyper Casual games, or have really made Hyper Casual games at all. And every gamer has to start somewhere. And hell, I would argue that old Arcade games were Hyper Casual games. Most cabinet were simple to control, easy to understand, highscore based, and could be played by anyone. HOWEVER! The mobile HC games and Arcade games differ in that, Arcade were difficult, had some nuance, weren't cookie cutter games, and mainly targeted towards young boys. Now over time, gaming as a whole became more developed and complicated, to a point were it was not beginner friendly. To cut myself short on this: Everyone has to have and origin, it may not be a humble origin, but it's an origin nonetheless. I started of with old 2000s education or casual games.
Thank you for reading my discussion, have a goodnight
Last I checked, the casual nintendo games were made as an attempt to keep the lights on and the curtains hung due to the low sales of the Wii U and declining sales of the 3DS. They're nowadays just treated as, at best, companion pieces. i think the only ones that are getting serious support these days are Pocket Camp and Pokemon GO. Pokemon go because it's a decently novel concept being carried out by one of the leading companies in AR gaming, Niantic, and Pocket Camp, because Animal Crossing's status as one of the very first AAA cozy games lends itself pretty well to a "Pick it up, play for a bit, then go on with your day" playstyle already, and isn't hard to adapt to a mobile market. Plus, even Mario Run has thought put into it with unique level design
@@exyzt9877 True. I was more arguing that the major gaming companies aren't doing hard push on making mobile games, especially not games like Hyper Casual game. Basically what I'm saying is Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, ect. are not ditching console making and their game series, in order to make Hyper Casual games.
Rip popcap 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@keeganbeard1748 I think the closest nintendo has ever gotten to a hypercasual game is Miitopia, since the best way to describe it is that it's a fancy shitpost generator with a dash of RPG elements that are extremely mindnumbingly easy.
@@exyzt9877 Oh yeah, if you want to talk about Casual Nintendo games and not hyper casual games, they have plenty.
Wii sports, Wii play, WarioWare, Nintendo Land, Brain Age, Miitopia, Animal Crossing, Kirby's Dream Buffet, Mario Cart Tour. And that's just what I can list off the top of my head.
During the Wii and DS' life, Nintendo went crazy with casual games. A good crazy, but crazy nonetheless less. But like you've said, they've come close, but not quite over the line.

Tbh, I hate their guts. Because yeah, all the obvious bad stuff and the deeply capitalistic nature of them, devs just asset flip and all that. But even more, because I actually like good casual games, the typical time management, HOG, other games like Peggle and similar in nature, and it just ruins their reputation even more than the underserving one they already have, perhaps even leading to less good casual games to come out. So yeah, they are ruining gaming, in particular proper casual games, that have good monetization practices, have some degree of love, care and work put into them and their characters.
There should be rules for how you advertise your ads and the stuff you put in your ads.
The problem isn't with hyper casual games, it's the $60 releases trying to appeal hyper casual players. Want a example? Pokémon Sword and Shield. The level design is almost 1-dimensional, full of damn corridors that offer no exploration at all. The amount of content? Roughly enough for 10-15 hours. Just imagine going to the theater to see that now movies last less than an hour, but cost the same price. Would you ever go to the theater to watch a movie ever again? I wouldn't.
That is not "hyper casual". It's just unpolished. There is a difference. "Hyper casual" is a specific type of game and you can't just erase the definition.
@@goldegreen It's hard to believe that they couldn't make the level design less linear because of time restraints, specially for such a compact world design like the one found in Pokémon.

Yeah, I don't about this analysis chief. The description you establish for Hyper-Casual games have existed since the creation of Javascript and Flash games circa late 1990's to early 2000's.
It's a phenomenon created from a free to play gaming platform. I don't think it's ruining gaming because it fills its niche very well.
Companies are ruining gaming. They make a buggy and/or unfinished product. We buy the games and realize they are not good, but the companies made their money and they do it again. That's it.
