For the record, it's not your fault for not understanding the game's design and mechanics. These games are deliberately designed that way in order to overwhelm and confuse players so they feel more motivated to just purchase an item from the cash shop rather than try to keep track of and figure out all of the nonsense that is going on. All of these games have typical predatory psychological practices in order to milk as much cash out of you as possible. How else are they going to afford really well animated commercials that feature AAA talent?
Yeah with every other "rts" mobile games, I've learned that there are a few ok ones such as State of Survival, they all want to overwhelm you and buy things with real money you play enough of these games and you can do almost everything f2p in any of them because they all play THE EXACT SAME though a few games do EVERYTHING to force you to buy things

The “pin puzzles” are only there because of a lawsuit for misleading advertising.
That’s why they’re so disconnected and inconsistent.
Evony has a long history of shady behavior. They first started as a computer game sometime in the mid-2000s, and would put ads everywhere with busty medieval women saying things like "Play now, my Lord." The game itself was actually pretty much the same boring trite you see in a lot of those Kingdom builder mobile games. However, the game was also classified as adware by a lot of anti-malware programs. It's history is definitely worth looking into.
I remember being surprised when I saw ads for Evony: King's Return around 15 years later.
Plants vs zombies even referenced it iirc

Yah, I remember the Evony PC version and those ads all those years ago. I only tested the game out for a bit, didn't play long then just quit.
The reason the Merge Mansion story was so weird is because it was sort of(?) rewritten to match the ads. In the beginning of the game's lifespan, Granny was just an old, mysterious, but kind and caring maternal figure. She gave Maddie the house as a gift, though upon seeing the condition it was in, a representative from the city threatened to tear it down, leading to the objective of the game: clean it up. As time goes on, Granny told you more about her past and the friends she made living at the mansion, and why she held it so dear to her.
The current story is some sort of Frankenstein's Monster mix of the story told in the ads, and the more wholesome (and less nonsensical) story in the previous versions of the game. I wish they hadn't gone the shock-value route, because it was originally a pretty solid game with a straight-forward plot. It's a shame they had to go and ruin it.

From my limited knowledge of what went down behind the scenes, they kind of pivoted to chase fickle mobile gamers, and the increasingly overdramatised ads were the means to that end. The company also raked in the cash and investment, and subsequently grew dramatically, which tends to change the vibe of any creative endeavor at the best of times, and therefore the whole Merge Mansion story ended up veering into bizarresville.
MatPat made a pretty decent theory on Merge Mansion, and I'm also surprised this guy didn't mention Lilly's Garden.
I wonder if that's what happened to Lily's Garden as well because I remember when I first played Lily's Garden before all those "racy" ads for the game started popping up everywhere, Lily's Garden had a wholesome vibe to it too.
Love how in Evony you're playing as an American and all NPCs are stereotxpical cowboys, yet they still call you "my liege"
Of course, it’s America afterall with the strong American traditions of monarchism hereditary nobility and the complete lack of democratic tradition!. Don’t forget the famous American heroes like Buffalo bill, Cleopatra, and Spartacus.

Evertale is also infamous but it would require a hell of a lot of censoring (although youtube is content with showing softcore porn in THEIR ads)
The sad thing is that initially Evertale was a little more honest with their ads, and the game is actually pretty good, all things considered. They really don't need to run the ads they do now.

The best part is that there is almost NOTHING shown in their ads that is actually in the game. Except for the kinda lewd borderline softcore parts, that's actually true since the game is apparently just a gacha waifu collector sort-of RPG.
hold on, softcore porn? i remember getting evertale ads a while ago and it seemed like it was trying to be more edgy or dark or whatever, i remember one where some creature was locked up in a building and then escaped wanting to eat humans or some shit
To be honest Evony is the only game i found that has the Puzzle mechanics showed in the Ads
The funny thing is that Evony didn't actually have the puzzle mechanics at first, and was only put in because people complained that the ads didn't reflect the game at all.

Ok, I'll give you the heads up about what happened with the clans in Evony.
I played a clan based game, very briefly, probably about 15 years ago. Players were randomly placed on a continent (so, forced alliances) and you were expected to just micromanage funds, farming, troops, and everything from there (inb a more active way than something like Evony does).
I was attacked and killed off by my own allies within a couple days. I was later informed, by my cousin (who played this) that the game was highly competitive, and you needed to log on every few hours, update your territory, and so on. If you weren't constantly on top of everything, you were basically seen as just taking up space, and you'd be killed off as it was better to be a small alliance of highly active players than a larger one of less active ones.
Thankfully (?) the game has seasons (and successful continents would get bonuses next season, hence the competition), so that avoided the "your army of 600 was slaughtered by an army of 23K" issue - something that doesn't really work in modern mobile gaming (as it would nullify the use of shop items).
So yeah; immediate recruitment because you existed, and immediate booting because you weren't active enough to be useful. That's what went on here

We need a review of all the games where the ads suggest you have to save someone from freezing to death by fixing their window and fireplace. I swear I've seen that scenario from at least 10 different games.
The only one I'm aware of is Gardenscapes. That game has been doing what Merge Mansion is doing and has been altering its gameplay to match up with the ads.
99% of mobile games that build base-> send troops to invade kingdoms is based/ copy on 1999 online game UTOPIA- that actually is much more indepth with a Lord of Rings race selections and multiple options to invade, raid, enslave blah balh

I think the lily's garden ads are a little more unhinged than the merge mansion ads. For example all the characters all of a sudden being in a gay relationship for some reason in only that ad. Probably because they were trying to appeal to more people.

I actually played Evony ages ago, I think maybe around 2008? It was pretty much all RTS back then, with really predatory monetization. You know, paying real money to speed up construction or train troops. Which was absolutely necessary because you’d get massacred by more powerful players.
I spent hundreds of dollars and ended up on the top alliance on the server at the time, which was competing heavily with another. I remember getting a really bad flu and not being on my account for several days. When I got back, all my troops were dead, my resources gone, and the whole alliance had been destroyed by another group that had come in and spent thousands of dollars to bully the whole server. Quit after that happened.

I can say just one positive thing about the ads for these particular mobile games, at least they didn't steal from other mobile games for their ads. There's a mobile game called Tales of the Wind (No, it's not tied to Bandai Namco's Tales franchise in any way), and they used to have an ad that was literally just the opening cinematic for the mobile game Fate/Grand Order, but the end of it was cut as to not show the logo for Fate/Grand Order, they even kept the original audio in. The ad hasn't come up for me in over a year, yet the game is still running, so my guess is that the developers for Tales of the Wind were forced to take that ad down.
It was even obvious that it was stolen, as the cinematic shows popular characters from the Fate franchise. So yeah, the developers for these games might be liars and engaging in false advertisement, but at least they aren't committing copyright infringement.

Craziest thing is, in a real down period in my life, I was playing Tales Of Wind for a few months.
I had no income though so it was a fruitless grind fest that my Depression Brain used to kill time.
The fact that FGO is somehow still is one of the best examples of F2P game that is still playable for pure F2P players speaks volumes on how horrible the state of mobile gaming is.

I heard they actually started putting these elements they show in the ads recently as they were fined before, for false advertisment. Which i totally believe, because one of these mobile games (i don't remember the name) put in that simple math fighting puzzle, where you beat the enemy and their number gets added to your character's number, which wasn't present in game before the ads.
With Merge Mansion despite its lack of story it actually has more than it used to, back in the day it just threw you in the game and made you play but at least now they have some kind of story, also the ads back then were completely different to the ones today
What you experienced in Evony with the PVP is something that a lot of mobile games (used to) do. I used to poke around in Clash of Clans, same thing. You just get beaten up over and over again by high level players until you either pay up or give up. That's it. That's the entire deal with it.

There are literally dozens of games just like Evony and Mafia boss. They are all basically the same with minor differences and different paint jobs.
Yeah, there are two versions of there games. One is like Evony and mafia city where its all RTS. The other is like Lords Mobile where you have all the base building and RTS aspects but also hero build like Raid Shadow legends. Despite how horribly pay to win these games are i actually really like them. Maybe one day someone will make a game like that that isnt P2W

I played Evony for a Few Days
Basically there multiple servers (each server has his own rules but they are made by Players) this make Guild try to invite players (for some reason i don't remember)
Guild also have rules and one of these being that you need to move your base nearby the Guild Main Base
You probably didn't and got kicked, the Guild found you ignoring them offensive and attacked you (as the dude is from that same Guild)
Ps: The only way to avoid being attached is having a Guild backing you up or using items (like there's this item that show to Other Players that you are a pacifist and they aren't supposed to attack you)
I'm pretty sure the puzzles are in Evony because they sort of got in trouble for false advertising and risked a lawsuit... I think it was actually a different game that probably got sued out of existence, and Evony and a few others updated their game before the same happened to them. I don't quite remember the specifics.
I got a “state of survival” ad half way through this video 😂 their ads are absolutely ridiculous! It was men dressed in bunny suits, with three woman sitting on a couch. Middle lady says “introduce yourselfs” and they go on to brag how much coins and characters they have 😂
I love how they advertise "use these codes and get all the best stuff right away and be invincible!!"

I stopped playing Evony after a year because one big reason was my troops kept getting killed off whenever I was offline. It takes weeks and weeks to train troops and get to a big enough number. In my case I was up to 28 million and in one fell swoop another higher leveled player would take it down to 4 million. Over and over. I just got tired of it.
PSA: if anyone's looking for a game that actually does what the fake Evony ads do, it's called Hero Rescue. The whole game is 100% puzzles and has no lvling up, no mmorpg trash, no rts trash, no Age of Empires rip- off trash, and most importantly no multiplayer. It even works without internet so you can just turn off the wifi to get rid of any ads.

the most recent one in my country (probably in all Asia) is Girls' Connect, where they just straight up lying in their ad video, saying there will be 1 million diamonds and VIP 15 for new players (even though the VIP cap is 13), but there's no such things. and the ad video would play over and over again, you could see the ads 20-40 times a day while playing your favorite games.
At best some voice actors or animators must have been paid to make these

You worrying about demonitization from cleavage puts some perspective on youtubes idea of appropriate content when considering isaac is a game that touches on much more touchy subjects yet youtube typically considers it a very wholesome game and sometimes flags it as "for kids" lol.
Like I get cleavage is considered "adult" since breasts but they just are a body part until presented in an "adult" manner.
Allthough alot of the games here do present in said manner with minimal age rating issues from that strangely, suppose it sells though so I guess the online store owners don't give one since it makes moola.

CZcams wants to appeal to investors and people paying for ads with appearing as good as they can, striking you tubers because they accidentially show a little breast from a game... While at the same time accepting and showing to people hentai ass adds that are borderline soft corn porn. CZcams just sucks.
Yeah my last mobile game video was demonetized for adult content and that video was so tame so i am being SO cautious. Demonetization also kills it in the algorithm so its super scary.

These mobile games basically moved their predatory garbage from facebook games of like mid 2000s, to a new platform with a lot easier monetization and even less oversight/quality control.
Thoroughly enjoyed getting an ad for Evony right when you started talking about it, and it looking absolutely nothing like the game you were talking about.

I played a warhammer version of evony a while ago, it's really not that complicated when you understand some of the quirks of the genre
for example, resource packs can't be stolen. if you have a pack that can be turned into 5k or 100k of something, keep it as the pack and only crack it when you need it for an upgrade
that genre is definitely a cool one, once you get your head around it. I just haven't had the chance to go back to it for a little while

I play Mafia city (i really like it but i like these kind of mobile games) if you want characters from the game to be even remotely useful you literally have to shell out atleast 100 buckos, its such a piss off.

My favorite ads are the ones with clearly fake voices being mixed in over boring gameplay. Or the recycled reaction sounds. You see it alot, even in really big mobile games that should have more than enough money to pay actual VAs to do Real ads for them (Genshin Impact had one for example, and that game was the highest grossing mobile game for the first year it was out).
I think a game called Royal Match is really taking the cake, because I think they have literal look-a-likes pretending to be celebrity business owners "endorsing" their game lol.

TWD survivors is an example of a game with Ads that don't convey what the game is about, Age of Zombies too. Full false ads.
Also it is crazy that these games are so complex that no one seems to understand them fully. And at the same time they are deep as a puddle of water.
It is worth note that TWD Survivors is almost the same game as Evony, without the puzzles, but with other "perks" that I already forgot, even after playing the game for many hours.

I can't tell what they were thinking with giving Merge Mansion some sort of Hello Neighbor-esque story towards it even though it's a mobile game which is just a match 3 game. It's sad because Mobile games USED to be decent back in the early days of smart phones, now it's like... 99% garbage with one good mobile game popping up every 2-5 years? I don't know if that genre will ever get out of that hole but, companies just need to treat phones like a console, not like a cash cow.

That game that had the RTS, puzzle solving, and army building seems like it has one too many ideas that it wants to implement but the ideas either not meshing well or there's too much going on. That's why when I play games like that, I don't play them very long. I've played RTS games with army building or City building games with puzzle solving but I never play one with all four in one game for too long.

These idle strategy games like Evony and Mafia City are such an old concept at this point... I played stuff like this 15 years ago on Facebook or just in a web browser. Games like Ogame, Mafia Wars, or Kampf um Mittelerde (German for "Fight for Middle-earth", not a licensed game btw).
I kinda hate that these games still exist and are so widespread these days, there's even an officially licensed Game of Thrones game with that exact concept (which is infamously terrible and exploitative)
The general idea of them IMO is fun. It's like a game like Warframe where you dedicate hundreds of hours to but instead pop in every few hours, start your ques and send your troops out. The part that sucks is how fucking abusive their monetary system is. I really like playing mafia city but dont have a grand a month to dedicate to it.
