Thus, many retailers refused to sell the Saturn.

It was Sega of Japan's idea to release the Saturn with no launch leaving a lot of pissed off retailers, some who dropped the console and did not sell it. It was also Sega of Japan that decided to not have a standard and or good dev kits and reference materials, which is why a lot of companies chose Sony and the PlayStation. Some sources claim that Sega wanted to keep it that way so their in house developers would have an edge. Both Segas made some really stupid choices, I wonder what could have been if they had both worked together.

This is why modern games all feel so similar. There’s no competition outside of the pre-established Goliaths. It’s the opposite problem the industry has in the 80’s but the result is the same - a market full of low quality products and rehashed IP’s from the past. It’s sad to see what’s become of the gaming industry. It looked so promising back in the 2000’s but things haven’t improved since then.

A good friend of mine kept bugging me to port one of my games to the Ouya... he said it was gonna be the most amazing console ever. I was reluctant because it was coming from a company with no track record, so I held off but kept it in the back of my mind. Then when it launched, it came to the surface that other developers were having a hell of a hard time with communication with the parent company... there were a lot of technical issues and the Ouya developer forums were apparently flooded with complaints and inquiries, all of which were either being ignored or just brushed off. I don't think I've ever breathed such a large sigh of relief for being cautious.
