This makes it sound like life in plastic ain't fantastic
Its about how she feels trapped in her role as a sex worker. "Life in plastic" is about both how she's changed her appearance so much she doesnt recognize herself anymore, and how she feels as though she has stagnated. Ken is a John, in this case.
I was thinking more that we’re polluting the world with plastic, and living in a plastic polluted world isn’t fantastic.. 😕
it never should have been
I know right? XD
Even sang Happy it was always cringe. Always reminded me of the high school "popular girls" that secretly hated their lives.
Barbie has gained: *Self Realization*
"I overheard a woman at the supermarket say the strangest thing. She said, “There goes Barbie. Poor thing, she doesn’t know she’s a toy, created by a corporation. Silly thing has never wondered where the car or the house came from.” And the truth is, I’d never thought of those things... Until today. Today is the first and very last day of my life."

Thank you! The comments are full of (more or less) insightful comments and I was just trying very hard not to crack up throughout the song!
What part was that at?
Spoiler: They're not going to party.
Ups, covid xD
Lol🤣
Can I shove them in a woodchipper? Nothing against the song or the creators, I just think humanity is overrated, and I enjoy making them suffer.
😂
Lol at these comments saying “it’s like a criticism of beauty standards!” as if that’s not what the song has always been about lmao
To be fair, most of them probably weren't old enough to see the dance music craze of the early 90's and the way it mixed with mid 90's irony to create this song. Most people never get when a song is ironic because they tune out the words.
The original seemed much more of a celebration of that culture than a criticism. It was satire, but not necessarily the direct social commentary of this version.
@DeadLittlePunkDoll 97, but it borrows heavily from the earlier dance music craze. It exists as a sarcastic parody of the artificial peppiness of that song and lifestyle. And possibly the emptiness of the classic girl's toy as a symbolic representation of beauty.
IKR? It's literally r/im14andthisisdeepn, CZcams comments edition
The original song was about sex, not beauty standards. She was pretty much saying treat me like a kid treats a doll, undress me and do whatever you want to me.

I didn't cry, but was quite sad listening to it at 2 am too
If you actually pay attention to the lyrics of the original song you'll notice that it actually is already a sad song just appears to be happy and stuff because of the instrumentals and the way it's sung. Through this cover it just gets more visible ...
Exactly. The original always made me sad. And the fact that it didn't make other people sad made me even more sad.

This mostly highlights how Barbie's relationship with Ken is toxic AF.
Barbie: [has existential crisis]
Ken: Yo, bby, let's partay!
idk about that. It sounds like they're both having an existential crisis. like even Ken's "lets go party" sounds more like a guy trying to distract himself from the bleakness of his existence than it does just ignoring her crisis, because his is so bad that if he just takes a moment to consider it, he would be overwhelmed and want to end everything.
@@luciussulla2641 so actually Ken is a good guy here, he wants to make Barbie happy
Ah, yes, but as other commenters have remarked, Ken sounds like an abusive partner. So, while Barbie's observations are a cry for help coming from a desperate individual at odds with society in general, and her partner in particular, Ken sounds like a soulless monster who solves his inner turmoil by turning it on his partner in the form of unwanted sexual advances and compulsive partying, of the "you better smile, doll, or else!" variety.
Whould've thunk, huh?
Ken’s come on barbie let’s go partay is actually a traumatic memory in barbie’s mind being played over and over again, so she cannot get over it

The original song is already super sad. Part of the brilliance of the original is that it's literally two songs:
One is a tonally happy song about literally barbie dolls.
The other is about women as toys for men.
Impact is greater with the original as the tone stands in stark contrast to the underlying message.
But only this version brings it out to people who haven't paid attention to the lyrics because the original is so upbeat.
Barbie girl is literally about a sex doll.

@@Rapscallion2009 I was just thinking this. As if Barbie from Toy Story realizes she's not real. :(
When Barbie realizes that her entire existence is simply to create an unrealistic body image for women around the world.

You are everywhere man hahaha
Ah yes, Justin Y. 3.0
*and make money for a big corporation using such imposed standards

The solo is genius. The change in key and the overall production quality turn a simple parody of an already parodic song to a whole new level of powerful. Amazing job, guys!
Her voice is incredible.
Honestly, this has always struck me as a sad song hidden behind glitter and smiles. You can have all the beauty in the world, but who could possibly enjoy being a plastic puppet?
Maybe I'm just a pessimistic overthinker though lol
No. You're right. This song was a critic to its time. It's still relevant because it can still be applied to our time.
I guess somethings never change.
Waldo, 100% correct. I love the sound of this cover, but I think it's too "on the nose." The upbeat sound of the original, hiding the grim nature of the lyrics, was essential. Plus, no matter what, once I hear "hanky panky" in a super sad voice, I get the giggles.
Nope, you got it.
Very true. I’m convinced most celebrities lives aren’t as great as they portray. I’ve always said , you can have all the money in the world but it won’t matter if the people that you surround yourself with are fake and hateful.
@@Tinkerbell9087 Yep. It's clear how plastic and miserable celebrities actually are. Then there's the Hollywierd culture... eugh.
Barbie's tired of being a trophy girlfriend, wants to go to college and do something with her life, but her childhood sweetheart isn't maturing and is rapidly becoming a toxic loser :(
But she’s a doctor already....
And a race car driver.
And a police
And a vet, dentist, astronaut, chef... She's even run for president!
And she's in a wheelchair too 😃
The cover makes me realize that we finally grew up and that things won’t be the same like when we were kids man I’ll never forget all the memories I had with that song
It also highlights just how fucking twisted and dark the original was... gives you a new appreciation for it.
This music has always been a criticism, you were just too young to notice
Yup we would get wrote up about singing this song in school and they would call our parents.....I got older found the song again and instantly was in shock!
Yeah. Aqua was quite blatant about it, but most missed it the first time around
#truth
How sad, disturbing and dark-undertoned could have been a song where a real woman spoke about being a plastic toy destined to do exactly what other wanted... I wonder...
Add to the fact that Aqua was set up as a band that wasn't meant to be 'taken seriously'
I had never realized how sad these lyrics actually are! When you guys sang them in this softer sadder way, it highlighted how shallow the Barbie life is and the way we just play with women's image and lives
@Podcast - SørenCast Z must be nice being so ignorant
Those poor helpless creatures, if only they had the freedom to make autonomous choices.
That was the subversive message of the song hidden in the upbeat rhythm and sound.
Sounds like two people having a existential crisis. Barbie is realizing that her life and relationships are a plastic facsimile of a happy life. Ken has also or is realizing the same thing. but is trying to desperately block it out with partying. It could almost be a reprise of the original song. Her and ken start out excited and having fun in the original, but as the party dies down and the alcohol withers away there left their own crippling depression.
Did not expect this comment to be so liked. Well thanks everyone, one of my most liked comments.

This gets a way different feeling... And I don't mean like "well its a sad cover" it's almost like you gave it a pretty deep message. Holy shit. That's what I call talent. Also awesome voices. Both of you
.......I honestly wasn't expecting this to be so good
Barbie sounds like a cynical celebrity who feels likes she's lost her agency and is now just paraded around and played with to please everyone else.
Is...is that not what Barbie already is?
Song is deep. This version just draws attention to how depressing the lyrics are.
You know, I'd feel sad if said parading around didn't bring you billions.
Reminds me of the movie Bolt.
Do you mean: Haymich Abernathy?
The girl has such a beatiful voice. Nice cover!

This is way more beautifull than I expected. Real musicians. Cheers from Brazil!
A song initially about boning has been transformed into a sad story of modernity. My depression is super confused but I can't stop listening to it.
Thank you for doing the things you do
Edit: you guys are awesome!
@@DigitalDaydreams I personally lump that in with "boning" because how women are viewed be society and media in general is "ayy gurl. how about we go to my place so we can do it like they do it on the discovery channel".
And of course it's been getting better over the years, but the point is still the same nevertheless.
Idk I’ve always thought Aqua’s music was more deep than the way it was presented. I think the reason Mattel got after them was not because of the sexualization, which to some degree is part of Barbie’s image, but the social criticism being referenced.
Westley Breitmeyer Now that I reviewed the lyrics again, you could even argue one of the messages is about plastic consumption. “Life In plastic, it’s fantastic” to me has an ironic streak to it. “If you say I’m always yours” seems to criticize the throwaway culture we have especially with toys.
It was always a song about sexism tho?
Same
Suggetion:
Men at work - Down Under (WAY TOO SAD COVER)
Video suggestions: fire and smoke everywhere.
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
If you know the story of Greg Ham and his tragic death that was pretty heavily related to the legal action over that song, the original is gut wrenchingly sad now too.
Me when I launched the video : That can't work.
Also me, after 30 seconds : Oh my god. It's awesome. It works totally.
This deserves to be in the next Barbie movie
Amazing always. I burst into a fit of giggles at "hanky panky".
This is about a girl with a very low self esteem and who can't see her own self worth.
So she meet all this different lovers and let them use her just so she can feel appreciated for one moment.
I get the same vibes here. She’s willing to be a figurative doll to any man who gives her false promises of love.
Yeah i felt the the same hearing this
That’s exactly what I hear.
Yes, and add in a history of sexual abuse. Sad!
It’s not out of an action out of deceit. In experiences I and others have had, they turn down us and then get upset as to why we move on....were we supposed to be waiting and not trying to make other connections because the ones we cared about hurt us the most. It was also in some cases that there may possibly come a day when the moment is a right time and go for it!

Such a strange song to make it this melancholic but doesn't mean it's bad. I really liked it! Brilliant work guys!
when i found your channel, my life just like a roller coaster. you twisted sad song to happy cheery song, you twisted happy cheery song into saddy depressy song....

This version is so much more accurate. I always thought the lyrics were depressing and more about a woman being whatever her man wanted whenever he wanted and pretending that his abuse and control was just fine. This is how I always actually envisioned what was going on.
You are correct. I mean, the lyrics are the same.
e.g. "i can beg on my knees" - that is either a consensual fetish or, more likely, a red flag of a toxic, non-equal relationship.
In this one, Barbie both knows and rejects the fact that no matter what she does (gets a law degree, becomes a doctor) All anyone sees is a pretty blonde who looks good in anything. So she accepts her fate and doesn't try to be anything else any more. Clinging to the few pleasures she's allowed to accept without judgement. Clothes, Ken, and going out to parties where everyone treats her like a queen.
Poor Ken, who only wants the love of his life to smile again (even if it's a fake smile for the public) keeps urging and begging Barbie to get out of the house and let herself have fun again.
And for a little while, each time, it works. But the downward spiral doesn't stop, and there's nothing else he can think of to do.
They're both exhausted about the whole thing and Barbie is turning numb to it all.
Really like her voice, and this version is interesting and well done !
Very meloconic. I can see this being a music video showing the life of someone, from childhood to old age, as the elder version reflects on her past life.
Her voice is beautiful and that guitar sound is so reminiscent of 1980's ballads I still hear on my local radio
