- It turns out distilled mouthwash is nasty. But I did learn something about distillation along the way.

I often include affiliate links in my videos and descriptions. This will not change the price for you at all, but the seller will give me a small kickback. Cool eh?
You've just created shots for koalas 😂😹🤣🍸
Ha! Pretty much!
@@StillItwould love to see you make the famous multi-grain drink made from malted corn rye and barley that was made by popcorn Sutton
@@pureleaf8259 or he could go completely off the rails and use weetabix for the mash🤔
Crazy enough to work 🤣😹😂
Fun fact, Listerine is named after Joeseph Lister, a British surgeon who was the first to use proper antiseptics for sterility during surgeries.
Huh I had no idea!
@@mozzyquodo5532 That is Chlorhexidine. The main active ingredient in Corsodyl mouthwash and also various hospital handwashes like Hibiscrub. Yes originally used as a floor cleaner at stronger concentrations. (Source: I'm a Dentist)
Lysol was invented to be sprayed in a lady's who-ha, which is a bad idea.
Yes, *Carbolic Acid.*
Absinthe and tea tree oil bud ,could tgag be what you taste?
I'd be really interested to see what would happen from fermenting and distilling seaweed.
An idea i did not know i needed to hear XD
Years ago I worked at a lab for a co-packer that filled Listermint mouthwash. We'd get 55gal drums of pure ethanol that we'd denature using menthol crystals. This was to keep the line workers and mechanics from getting trashed while they filled it, but we still found empties of finished product stashed all over the plant. Also, they still used sodium saccharine as the sweetener. Some viewers might remember Tab cola (think the label said "known to cause cancer in mice").
As an undergrad in a lab I once did a shot of reagent grade 99% ethanol. Would not recommend.
Used to love tab cola
I had forgotten Tab. That stuff had an... interesting taste. 😂
I think saccharin tastes way better than the "natural" versions of sweeteners many companies use now, like stevia or monk fruit sweetener, those taste way worse, like the worst part of vegetation and the worse part of sweetener flavor mixed together.
@@kristoffer-robinlotze7273yeah, like liquid cardboard infused with Sweet and Low. 😂😂😂
Not only does it give you experience, it also switches content up a bit on your channel allowing for entertainment to be mixed into the awesome instructions and information
We totally have Vicks here (in the states) our grandmothers put it on our feet, our chest, our necks & upper lip for all sorts of things
Now you’ll have to try the other flavors of listerine (all of the many mint varieties, cinnamon, berry, bubblegum & the weird limited edition ones like lime and coconut) to see if that Vicks vapor rub taste goes away. 😂
Do they even make the original flavor still?!?!?
@@prccap they at least do in the states
I'd guess berry and bubblegum might cut out the cleanest because the rest of the products are oil based flavourings and harder to cut out completely.
I was making hard candy for the cannabis industry and found out some flavours are extracted in different ways according to LorAnn. I started digging into this when I noticed some flavours were harder to work with than other's and wondered why.
My Mom used to work at a halfway house for alcohol and drug recovery. Mouth wash was the #1 confiscated contraband. 😂😂😂😂
I always kind of thought that was a myth. Then I got in trouble in rehab because my urine showed I had consumed alcohol. Turns out a considerable amount of alcohol is absorbed through the mouth when you use mouth wash 3 times a day. I assume you'd get quite the buzz from a full bottle. It was during the pandemic and hand sanitizer was freely available everywhere... until the alcoholics started drinking it. But honestly, drinking industrial ethanol doesn't sound so bad if you consider the fact that amphetamine addicts sometimes drink their urine because there's still amphetamines in it. Fun facts about the horrors of substance addiction lol
@@RamoArt so like can I drink this shit and get buzzed?
When my father was an alcoholic (he's not anymore and not dead) he used to start on his favourite - beer and progress to cheap wine as his money ran short and he'd then raid the kitchen and bathroom cupboards when he ran out of money and drink vanilla and lemon and essence, after-shave and mouth wash. When he ran out of that he'd drink metho. Needless to say it got uglier as it went. Not violent, just ugly. Metho is nasty sh*t. Mind you mouthwash, after-shave and lemon essence isn't a lot better.
You have a great channel - keep up the good work.
Looking forward to your review of the Air-still pro.
Daamn... kudos to your pops for hitting THAT spiral of suck and somehow coming out of it both alive and not addicted!
I knew someone like that, sadly he passed suddenly after drinking a mystery bottle of something he found in the garden shed. I nevwr did hear what he actually drank but I remember his wife mentioning he was curious about this mystery bottle she didn't think was booze and wished she'd have thrown it out. Thankfully your husband stopped ❤
Ahhh yes mouth wash. That was my second guess after tooth paste flavored alcohol lol.
hahaha
If memory servers, Listerine has an additive to make it unpalatable as a beverage because some people would drink it because it was (at the time) cheaper than wine/booze. Mouthwash bottles were everywhere in Detroit when I was a kid, but being a kid I just thought people were really into dental hygiene.
The lingering taste is likely eugenol. It's a derivative of clove oil and is the classic "dentist smell"
Pronounced "you-jen-ol" btw
@@AlasdairThompsonLike eugenics
@@asahearts1 Actually yes, It was named after some prince of Savoy called Eugene. Or rather the clove tree was called Eugenia after him and the extracted oil called eugenol. (Eugene literally means "good genes", "breed true" or "well born" depending on how you translate it.
Rumpleminz is gonna be pissed
You should try distilling vanilla extract. Bet it'd be more tasty than listerine, lol...
Would have to be the artificial stuff, otherwise he would go bankrupt
have you ever tried more than a drop of vanilla extract? that would be nasty.
I remember telling my cousin that vanilla had alcohol in it when we were about 10 or 12....she actually grabbed her mother's bottle and drank it back 😂 The spice bottle of nutmeg and eating the whole Exlax bar were worse she said.
Got the vapo rub here in canuckastan. 🇨🇦
Trevor from WKUK would be proud. RIP, Trevor.
My first comment here. Ok, so, long ago I built a column still from a beer keg, and copper pipe. One of my runs, someone gave me a soda keg, and it had coca-Cola syrup in it. So I fermented it, and ran it. Took the fore shots, and heads off, then worked on the hearts. Every bit of it tasted like unsweet cough syrup. Actually quite nasty. My still would average about 70% abv. So I proofed down the best of my cut, and it was not any better, just kind of a ginger, earthy, bitter cough syrup, yuck.
I’m so happy to see you experiment like this. Thumbs up to you for trying.
I did this a few years back for the exact same reason - curiosity. At azeotrope it clouded with the addition of water, exactly like Dettol. I believe (at least in Aus) that Listerine has a small amount of the active ingredient of Dettol in it, leading to the "stringent" flavor you mentioned.
Never considered distilling mouthwash, furthest thing from my mind. Automatic thumbs up 👍
I knew this was gonna be bad. Just not that bad. Vicks is so strong. Love it.
I hope to see more of these videos brother. 📹 keep em coming.
there is a drink we have when ,working in greenland that must be similar to this. Its called Fisk, its a bottle with an olde fisherman on it and essentially tastes like drinking fishermans friend. Its a thick black drink similar to jager but its a menthol eucalyptus vodka. Amazing shot
Your end results reminded me of a passing thought I had about our state made hand sanitizer. Never tried it as I was afraid of a permanent smell lingering in the still. Fun experiment 😊
Most of those have a Glycerin you do not want to drink.
I constantly get asked about methanol. And I try to explain what you did so well in this video. But one little bit of information is that during prohibition in the USA, unscrupulous bootleggers would add things like methanol (which could be purchased as a cheap antifreeze) to bump the alcohol content of their illicit product (much like adding fentanyl to pot). This is the stuff ("bathtub gin") that would result in methanol poisoning, not genuine distilled spirits from fermented grains and sugar.
Thanks for taking one for the team. 😂 l’ve thought about this, but it has been too far down on my ‘to-do’ list to have gotten around to. Drinking Vick’s how understandable.
lol yeah, dont do it mate !
I have pondered this for a while, not sure if you have ever tried it. What if you were to boil down maple sap, pitch it with yeast and distill it? Of course they do not allow us to play with stills in the US but it is nice to imagine. I feel like that would make a pretty tasty spirit.
In the USA our Listerine brand mouthwash lists that it is 21.6% alcohol by volume.
That was great, I had a smile all the way through and the ending did not disappoint. Thank you👏
In science class we made a chemical breathiser. Funnily enough alcohol and 15 year olds don't mix so we tested it with mouth wash
For anyone who says that distilling at home will kill you all I can say is that my grampa made vodka in his basement for decades and he only died once.😁
Your mention of how places denature alcohol with methanol reminded me of how the US government allegedly put poison into alcohol they knew would be drunk during prohibition.
Hi Jesse,
Thanks for all the great videos!
Distilling idea: mocha liquor (cans of cheap coffee grounds steaped in hot water, mix in or use blender to make chocolate syrup with bags coco powder, lots of sugar syrup or inverted sugar wash. Then add a cream product after like they do with bailey's)
Another great video. I have a weird one for you to try, when I was a teenager, my friend used to buy a really cheap after shave. You know the one, half a liter in a plastic bottle for 2 quid lol. Anyway she would mix it with orange juice and drink the stuff when she was skint. You could try and distill that might stink out your workshop, though 🤣
I've seen your videos on cleaning stills, but would like to see one on cleaning your air still, especially after a puke. Much harder to take apart and spray down with the hose.
It's funny but when you mentioned the astringent taste, it made me think of the nettle wine I sometimes make which has a hint of astringent flavour, I wonder how that would distill? as it has an earthy woody taste to begin with.
Eucalyptol is an oil so you probably did concentrate it in the distillation, I was actually looking about extracting the oils from a eucalyptus in my garden with my airstill
I pity everyone who only has access to listerine and not Meridol mouthwash. That shit is fire
I survived on this in rehab....fresh breath, no meth....
From what I researched and I'm probably wrong but it's the skin of fruits (pectin) that creates methanol. Which then get concentrated through distilling. Copper and peeling the skins of apples ect reduces said methanol so you have a wekaer concentration at the end of distilling. I'd still do cuts however if you make alcohol from scratch it takes nothing to peel but a little effort (buy a automatic peeler)
I'm shocked you didn't just use Yellow Listerene, which is known as a "bum wine" of sorts.
For Australians, you can distil at home you just have to get a free licence from the ATO (Australian Tax Office) though the taxes on the alcohol you produce can be prohibitive
Love to see you boss/wife involved I’ve gotten messages from her in my orders she is the glue and so great to watch and here her opinion 🇦🇺👍
i wonder when your going to use a hard candy like candy corn smash them up into a powder then see what flavors you get off it after fermentation and it being distilled
Think the lesson(s) learned is not all flavors carry over, they carryover in varying degrees, and what is "acceptable" in mash may not be good distilled.
2:28 Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Select American Oak, to my pallet has a hint of Listerine to it
Got my package of shirts with your astronaut in a jar, and I have to say I love the shirts as well as how quickly the company is to make adjustments to your order if you make a mistake on the forms.
Drinking Vicks sounds so much worse than drinking Listerine! 😂😂😂
I love your giggles!!
Eucalyptol is a monoterpenoid. A colorless liquid, it is a bicyclic ether. Eucalyptol has a fresh mint-like smell and a spicy, cooling taste. It is insoluble in water, but miscible with organic solvents. Eucalyptol makes up ~70-90% of eucalyptus oil. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptol
And from this day forward the terroir off Jesse's airstill was forever tainted by the remnants of a formidable minty hell
Despite stilling as a private person is super illegal in my country (like in all of western europe probably) i really enjoy your videos keep it up
The mint oil come's trou the distiling progres. That is what i think makes it so potend.
Also hicher abv enhanches flavor.
The machine that you juse is for distiling oil (that is what it is marketet for in the netherlands where you cant distil for a hobby). Maby if you woud put it on a reflux stil you would get a nice resould.
Mint oil start vaporising at 25 c° maby a way to get the oil out would benifit as wel.
Any chance you could make prison wine and then distill that.. Just to make the convicts jealous 😂
Hahaha the Listerine tasting was hilarious. Ahahahaha can't stop laughing. Great episode.
The eucalyptus flavour could be a good base for bitters though, how about infusing it with some other herbs and see how it turns out as a cocktail bitter?? Now I am intrigued really
is it possible to distill alcohol to the point its pure clean water?? Subscribed and liked thanksss
Not generally a drinker, but holy hell are you brave. There's zero chance that I would even try that lol.
Thanks for the awesome video =)
In germanx we have pfeffi its a pepermint liqur in the listerine container
I really hope that liquid did not have fluor or other stuff that are freeking hazardous to health ...
Good that in Finland we do have already a quite tasty mint vodka called Minttu... Otherwise, I love these videos! Congrats dude! 👍🏻
I have 13 - Into the AM shirts. I get compliments everyday about them.
when i was in my early teens id swallow a tiny bit of Listerine just freshen a little bit further back. it gave me bubble guts. didn't realize it was the mouthwash that was doing it till a couple weeks later. probably one of the denaturing methods they used or maybe something else in there i had a reaction to.
I did this a few years ago. It was nearly undrinkable. We called it Listermean. It made my still taste like eucalyptus for the next three runs.
eucalyptus across the ditch? I'm pretty sure that's for us Aussie legends only boi
I would love to see you try and make the famous popcorn Sutton multigrain alcohol it's made from malted corn rye barley
This makes me wonder what a Peppermint Schoppes would be distilled if you have not yet done it. Go with the cheaper lower alcohol since it is going to get distilled.
Your takeaway on this kind of reminded me of a line from a Kurzgesagt video (Gold Apocalypse) - "If you learned anything in this video, let us know what it was."
South African here my Listerine has a stated abv of 95.6% boarding school experience can confirm they are not lying
I've had mouthwash that had eucalyptol as an active ingredient. It had percentage too
Hey new to your channel and already loving the content as a home brewer I'm learning so much. Would love to see you make a historical Medler wine....(might have spelt Medler wrong lol)
I'm just picturing the scene from "toy soldiers" where sean astin gives his friends alcohol that looks like mouthwash
My grandfather used to use this as an antiseptic... it hurts on open wounds...
ITS A PASSION JESSIE
I don’t drink at all. But I can respect the craft and love the vids.
The people that think you'll go blind distilling at home are the same people that worry about the arsenic in apple seeds.
I worked in a warehouse when I was young. We knew guy was a drunk, because he smelled BAD. he finally admitted he was drinking cheap wine, 50:50 with Listerine!
I love you using old-time floor cleaner to make alcohol 😆
Do Fireball or Hot 100. The same thing will happen. It concentrates the heat along with the alcohol. I found that out as a kid.
What was worse Jesse, distilled Listerine or the fish flavoured mango wine?
Im 4 mins into the episode, im thinking straight rumple mints
In the States, Listerine tops out at 21% abv.
oh boy💀
Honestly I would expect my mouth wash would taste like Wray and Nephew (weirdly not minty but kinda herbal/spicy and fairly sweet cause my dentist prescribes me a specific mouth wash).
I tried to make a Wray and nephew cocktail whilst watching g this aaaaand, it’s still only good with coke.
Hey from ontario, thought this video was hilarious. Keep up the good work, my local distillery told me they were planning on a gin infusion class with you provided the government allows it, I'd love to attend and meet.
Man, I wouldn't have thought about doing this, glad you beat me to it lol.
We also have Vicks vapor rub in south Africa
remember that song from wkyk called what about mouthwash !!
Original not-mint Listerine flavor would have been a better choice if looking for "hints of listerine".
Love you videos and your happy outlook on things. Wish I could try what you do here in the states but I can't. I homebrew meads and wines and was wondering if you had a link to the tool that measures abv in this video? Thanks and keep up the good videos
I absolutely love watching you do crazy wacky things like this.
It’s Eucalyptus! Quick call Koala man!!
“Mate, that’s NOT on”
distill cooking extracts, like vanilla, or peppermint.
My bottle of Listerine Total Care says 21.6% alcohol v/v, or 43-ish proof.
Most extracts like vanilla, strawberry, etc .. are 35%apv + . How would distilled vanilla extract taste
I just got an advert for listerine after watching this video 😂.
I used to work for someone who drank swigs of Listerine at work. He'd also be fast-walking here and there, while sweating profusely... I'm not sure if that's a side effect, LOL... or he might have been taking pills as well.
I once included a tiny amount of old mouth wash in a big feints batch and ruined everything, ended up with lots of firestarter
Ive been wanting to get some IntoTheAM tshirts. Ill try to buy some in a week or so, I hope I remember!
My uncle used to drink that stuff before he moved on to hand sanitizer.
I have a mate that sourced several thousand liters of out of date hand sanitizer. He wants to distill it. Any thoughts?
Bloody hell, dann clickbait. I just had to pause another video just to watch this on notification. My only question is: Why? On? Earth?
Because Meme Spirits
@@StillIt Not sure if I have watched them all, but did you already try to ferment skittles to distill them?
@@NikiF88 not yet dude
Why? Why not!!
There may be another nostalgic taste you are picking up that might be root beer, A&W root beer contains a compound that is intended to make it taste 'medicine-ey' because it started as a medical drink you'd buy at a pharmacy. I am Australian and had Listerine long before I had American root beer and when I tasted A&W all I could taste was Listerine and I think the stuff is absolutely disgusting
