Yerba Mate is a type of tea, but it goes way beyond being just a tea. Earthy, pungent, and steeped in ritual, it's something you must try. FULL RECIPE BELOW.
New drink recipes air weekly, so make sure you subscribe to Tastemade for this and lots of other great new programming.
    Directed/Shot/Edited: Eric Slatkin
    Food Styling: Danielle Westberg
    MUSIC:
    "Candombeando" by Alberto Castillo
From the album: "Afro Roots of Candombe"
    Written by: R. Carambula
    Courtesy of Vampisoul
    INGREDIENTS
    Cold water
    Hot water
~ ½ cup Yerba mate leaves (Amount depends on the size of gourd)
    TOOLS
    Yerba Mate Gourd
    Bombilla
    Kettle
    Thermos (optional)
    METHOD
Fill the gourd with Yerba mate until roughly 2/3 full
With your palm over the top of the gourd, tilt to one side, and shake the yerba mate to one side of the gourd
Lay the bombilla (filter side down) over the yerba mate, preserving the gap
Pour a little cold water into the gap you've made, inside the gourd. Keep the gourd tilted until the water has been absorbed by the Yerba Mate.
Now add your hot water into the reservoir. It should be no more than 150 degrees F. Fill it to the top.
Enjoy your Yerba mate by drinking from the bombilla.
Your gourd can be refilled 15-20 times with the same Yerba Mate

Hi, I love watching videos on a custom that is so popular in my country, Argentina (and in other countries too), but the video has errors and is incomplete.
1 - Is Mate, not Maté.
2 - Only containers made from gourd or wood should be cured. If the container is made of metal, porcelain or glass, is not necessary.
3 - The mate is accompanied with sweet things like cookies, cakes, etc.. Not salty things! (with the exception of some types of bizcochitos and croissant and other things made with lard)
4 - It is very common to put additives to the mate. Sugar is used to sweeten. But also other things are used for variety of flavors such as coffee, lemon or orange peel, mint, etc.
5 - Popularly hot water is used on the infusion but there are other alternatives that are used less frequently like hot milk.
You can also use citric fruit juices or just cold water (this option is chosen during the summer mostly) and this cold version is called Tereré.
6 - The mate is mostly drink during breakfast in the morning or afternoon snack, but in reality, many people drink this infusion at any time of the day. During work, in college, in parks, etc.

In the north of Argentina (Misiones) the "mate" its sightly different, we use less ground yerba mate, the gourd (porongo) has a bigger top (allows the use of more yerba to avoid faster "wash"), it starts with a little of warm water then you use 80ºC water. A good mate is foamy and bitter.

No seamos boludos.

Sports athletes such as Lucas Matthysse is seen drinking it before his fights, and you can't have a gathering of friends either 2 or 2 dozen with out having Mate and absolutely bonding drink that is absolutely espectacular. philly till Agua tibia? jajaja Nada que ver, no conozco a nadie que use agua tibia.

Need to clarify about the temperature of the water - if you are to drink it @ 150° then DON'T heat the water to boiling (212°); you can heat the water to 180° but not much above that. Boiling water makes the esophagus vulnerable to damage, which could lead to cancer.

    • @seyfersnake

Also it ruins the flavour. Under no circumstance should the water be boiling. I dont know in fahrenheit, but in celsius its between 70° to 80°.
