    I've been saying this for years, but most bjj ppl online were like " That's Blasphemy! You're watering down bjj if you don't roll from your 1st class". Finally a renowned voice like yours has affirmed it.

      Well unfortunately for me I don't have Tristar gym near me. When it's time to roll I can't pussy out lol. My beginner's class is open mat and hope people answer my questions... Firas is exactly right. I have to fight myself to get to class. Especially wrestling. Hopefully I can stay in this.

      Yes but that's what is teached worldwide from Gracie Jiu Jitsu (at least Ryron and Royler academy and their franchises), so it's more of a matter of teachers not being smart and ignoring what should be the common best practice. I find it's also a good way not to disgust beginners from BJJ immediately.

    My stupid Academy has rolling after 10 classes. Torn elbow, torn shoulder later....this is the right approach. Learn some things, Then spar...cant believe anyone thinks roll right away.

      Rolling on Day one with zero drilling. I packed it in. Was getting injured. Always seemed a stupid method. Glad to actually hear a top coach doing things differently.

    I started in February 2023, and I've been training twice to three times a week, rolling every single time. Two months in I had a bad injury that put me out for over a month and it still hasn't healed properly. I've also seen many white belts quit this year because they get beat up so bad in sparring. The only thing that allows me to hang in there is that I was already well conditioned and I'm very motivated by this sport. Firas' juji videos are also super helpful. But yes he is 💯 correct here. The problem is that the majority of gyms do not apply this philosophy.

    Man! This is so true. My mma trainer just taught as how to shoot and made us roll. I sprained my fingers after two months and left the gym.

    This advice sounds similar in some respects to the Gracie CTC / Gracie Combatives approach to introducing beginners to jiu-jitsu, which gets a lot of criticism and hate in the BJJ world for, among several other reasons, not allowing beginners to roll for the first 8 months or so. As a beginner debating whether to try a CTC after time off dealing with some early training injuries, I would really like to know coach Zahabi's opinions on the Gracie system in light of his proven success.

      He's somewhat already made a video on the Gracies' approach to jiujitsu. In short, he likes it...
      And this video is as detailed as I've seen him get on beginner training protocols. And yes - it's very similar to a CTC (I train in one, and I've also trained in a "sport gym" prior)...
      Tom DeBlass also doesn't let people roll right away. In fact, the Gracie Barra beginner's program - GB1 - doesn't have rolling until three-stripe white belt if done to Carlos Jr's standards....
      Renzo is originally from GB, so all his lineage (Ton DeBlass, Firas, etc.) is as well....
      So is Roger Gracie, and guess what he uses in his beginner's program? A card with all the beginner classes/techniques listed (similar to a Combatives card).
      PSBJJA? All belt testing is technique demonstration (similar to a Combatives test), and they only require about 20 classes of rolling before you test for blue.

      (Warning: rant incoming lol)
      Frankly, a bunch of what you see online are impressionable white belts and early blue belts (read: beginners) that don't know any better. They just drink their coach's kool-aid and believe their "mom & pop" school is the best out there (funny that everyone believes that)....
      And it's because most of those mom & pop coaches don't care to know any better. They think a black belt equals teaching/coaching ability, so "what I say is right" is the default.
      Trust me - regardless of where you train (I've trained in both types of places....over seven years now), skill starts to even out at purple belt. All other things being equal, you won't tell the difference in skill level of a "sport-focused purple" and a "self-defense-focused purple" on the mats).....
      However, you absolutely will see the difference in teaching/coaching ability as well as burnout/injury rate among beginners....They tend to have a bit more experience than those mom & pop folks.

    The problem with this is that it really cheats those at the gym who need to experience rolling with a completely unskilled opponent. I LOVE rolls with fresh guys coming in who have 50lbs on me. Can really see my jiu-jitsu work in ways I couldn’t if they had 6 months of experience. It’s so valuable. The athletic unskilled cross fitters are the best. It’s the closest way to see what it feels like if you were to scrap with someone off the streets

    This is what we offer at my gym now. Gracie Combatives. What Firas is saying I know from first hand experience is true. Obviously combatives has a different focus to Firas program but I know my students are developing well rounded skills before they start rolling and having trained at Tristar before , I know Firas students are exceptional. My beginners classes are super popular since changing over to a slower more sustainable program.

    Totally agree. I'm 3 months in, training 3 x a week with partners but no real grappling. I still don't have great muscle memory of the techniques! The basics! Just let me get the fundamentals down to unconscious levels before I start grappling. I'm also weight training daily.❤❤❤

      I think you build the muscle memory by constantly getting smashed and then figuring out why you’re getting smashed and then try to defend or stay out of those positions.

    To build skill this is the way. However you need atleast 1 day in the week to stress the muscles to the point of adaptation for growth in muscle and strength. Which is going to failure i.e 100% effort on main compound exercises like squat, press, deadlift etc. However if the technique on those lifts are not proper then it makes sense to go less than 100% to build technique first.

    Coach here in Germany there is no beginners class we do some technique and then roll / spar
    Sometimes when only roll or spar even though 90% of the class are beginners

    if you dont roll ,you are lazy, if you rest, you weak, if get injuried, its your fault, if you are submitted, you suck, early tap, you are coward, rolling white belts? you are playing ez, if you dont win by submission its not a win, also if the opponent gets tired it's not a win either. Only world titles counts, thats why i learned till blue belt. oh buy at least one instructional before it's too late and be like water my friend.
