I always laugh when I see guitar vids on youtube titled "Impossible Guitar Solo", or anything like that. Then I watch some Charlie Hunter vids and think 'Man, this is 10x more difficult to play. And it sounds better!'.
I was listening to "Songs from the Analog Playground" for months before finding out that Charlie plays both bass and guitar. Although it made me appreciate his skills much more, I will never forget how much I enjoyed each and every song on that album for the musical genius that he is, not for the technique. Leave your prejudice and envy behind. He is not a circus performer, he just plays his instrument differently than you and me. If that were a keyboard instead of an 8-string, I guess no one would post such mean comments. ;)
One of the world's best 8 string players. Probably just Charlie and Abasi and Reyes, three kings of 8 strings. However, Charlie has the world's best jazz facial expressions.
some of those figures must be tremendously difficult. saw this dude give in a clinic in Milwaukee a few years ago, he was really down to earth about his unique style, although he did admit that it is a very challenging way to play.
I used to live in San Diego and L.A. and saw Charlie Hunter about 6-7 times, one of the best shows around. I'm not in Central NY, Ithaca. Please come up here for a gig Charlie ? Like the good ole days at the Casbah in S.D. man ! BONES CHARLIE, BONES !
ever since i watched this video for the first time ive always wanted to meet Charlie and beg him to teach me how to play and 8 stringed guitar, this is probably one of the best this ive every seen
no kidding.. he's actually a very nice guy. He stood behind me (without me noticing) for about 10 minutes and said he liked the chord voicings I was playing, and the asked me to pay his instrumet so he could listen to it from a distance
Hey Charlie that is quite aunic way to make your guitar sound like a 1974 old keyboard I realy like the sound it bring back some awsome memories. when cabaret jazz was "HIP" good work indeed GDBLS
It is the first time I get to see incredible Charlie Hunter,I new he was playing a guitar with bass strings and metal sound like Stanley Jordan but a Hammond B3? Amazing!
@TheSpearsProductions String science is all about dividing the length of string at certain points to get desired pitches. The difference in bass/guitar strings division points needed to be taken into consideration so that the relative tuning of all the strings would work while playing. So to get the desired 4ths vertically from the bass and guitar strings took precise measurements across the height of the board so that each note division was correct for that pertaining string.
It looks like he take a classical approach to jazz. Incredibly clean playing. Extremely impressive and a real pleasure to listen. Nice changes, too. Does he write his own stuff? Thanks for posting... this guy is a real talent.
It's like he established his own musical cultural forms and then became the master of them. Sounds so relaxed and natural. Can we get him on a banknote or something? National treasure? Maybe the zero-dollar bill like the "Gentlemen" album cover.
He comes from another planet. Period. His middle finger bass is just nuts. I mean, my brain can kind of process his index finger doing bass, but then he alternates to middle and uses the rest of fingers to pick, slide, tap, hammer, pulloff, bar-chord and pick his nose if possible. I got to know him until 4-5 years ago by John Mayer talking about him, when it should have been the other way around.
Charlie runs the bass part thru a bass rig (the strings have their own pickups). I met him ina msuiic store in Berkeley a few years ago, and at that point the guitar part wentb thru a little Dredgetone amp (like a souped up deluxe, basically) and the bass part thru something like a Walter Woods, if I'm not mistaken. He actually late m play that 8 string beast for about 10 minutes...what a blast!
Good observation. While its true that because of the style one can get locked into blues boxes, but the 3 bass strings allow you to hit the root note of a chord and have three octaves at least of chromatic notes to choose from. It's just a matter of learning all the boxes, putting them all together and then there is no box at all. Workin' on it. A life's work. Check out his newer vids and his playing has really evolved.
That would be a sight! ...or a sound... I'll give ya Larry Carton and Chuck Rainey accompanied by Donald Fagen trading licks with Larry. Lol, I’m just messing around, Charlie is one of a kind. He never ceases to amaze.
@HiImJerry8 Because he has an extended range instrunment (*string) the thicker the string, the longer the scale length needs to be. Imagine if you will a bass and guitar, try to put them on one neck, if you use the guitars scale length, then the bass strings will be floppy and go out of tune, if you used the bass's scale length then the guitar strings will be to tight and go out of tune, so the fanned fret board deals with this problem and keeps tuning and intonation in check. Hope that helps :)
I talked to him last week after a show to ask him a question. I asked him if he mainly thinks about the bass when playing or the chords and melody while playing. He answered, "I just think about the music."
@achickensandwich I suppose that makes sense. I didn't know if it was more of a personal choice when it came to how comfortable your fingers are when playing or something like that, but what you said makes sense.
He's playing guitar and bass at the same time and he's better than I am at either. Unbelievable.
Are you worth comparing at all?
He is actualy playing jazz organ on this one!!...
and rhythm
Get him some drums too! WOW! 👀
I always laugh when I see guitar vids on youtube titled "Impossible Guitar Solo", or anything like that. Then I watch some Charlie Hunter vids and think 'Man, this is 10x more difficult to play. And it sounds better!'.
Dayam! Making the guitar sound like an organ. Incredible talent.
became aware of charlie in the 90s and he was as amazing then as he is now. He is one of those players that seems to have ALWAYS been amazing.
Dude may be the most underrated/overlooked guitarist
This guy is incredible. Saw him in Hartford opening up for John Schofield. Loved him ever since.
Shame,, they should BOTH be headliners.

This song makes every object within reach a percussive instrument
One of the world's best 8 string players. Probably just Charlie and Abasi and Reyes, three kings of 8 strings. However, Charlie has the world's best jazz facial expressions.
Yessir. Probably one of the few places you'll see them used like this. I've never seen them used elsewhere, personally. This guy is amazing.
Outstanding!!!

some of those figures must be tremendously difficult. saw this dude give in a clinic in Milwaukee a few years ago, he was really down to earth about his unique style, although he did admit that it is a very challenging way to play.
I wish I could do that! AMAZING!!!! Thanks for being alive and sharing your wonderful talent with the world!

Lead rhythm and bass at the same time. I'd need another 100 years
Man INSANE how skilled he is. WOW :-)
This is seriously sick! Oh my gosh this is fantastic! How on earth 8 people could "dislike" this, is beyond me! Crazy!
All I can muster up is "how?!"
That's incredible.
A true legend, and far too under-appreciated.
I'm speechless. Awesome.
Really amazing...the walking bass line with the melody in this fasion is a style in and of it's self. Thanks for posting.
Some of the best bass playing I've heard.

That is so unbelievable, I love it.

GDBLS
omg that first guitar run was sick
Charlie is obviously a freak of nature and talented beyond most musicians.
thats not the result of learning, its the result of developing a new technique that kicks ass and left me breathless o.O
I would give up my soul to play like that!!!!
INCREDIBLE!!!
It is the first time I get to see incredible Charlie Hunter,I new he was playing a guitar with bass strings and metal sound like Stanley Jordan but a Hammond B3? Amazing!
Yeah, Hunter is a beast. In his trio he plays the bassline and the guitar on the same instrument.
oh my god this is amazing
So sick!
amazing!
Charlie Hunter is out of his mind. That was uncalled for. Almost want to throw my guitar over the Brooklyn Bridge ...
Incredible
Sick groove! Love it :D
Love Charlie!!
He plays like it's the last time he'll ever play it just that way.
after about 2 seconds of hearing this video i favourited it
awesome music!

whoa dude... whoa!
It's like he established his own musical cultural forms and then became the master of them. Sounds so relaxed and natural. Can we get him on a banknote or something? National treasure? Maybe the zero-dollar bill like the "Gentlemen" album cover.
I like his guitar style and his sound. It's sounds like a band!
So badass
Toca pra caralho, tá loko!!! Inspiring!
Insane.
You're so talented can't believe I just learned about you today. Happy New Year :)
Unbelievable.
2 in 1. I used to play guitar 30 years ago and I would be happy If I could play just the half he did... :)
Thee are no swear words to describe this.
I got to get myself one of those!
Oh dear no more bass players required. Maybe I can find a job washing dishes somewhere...
wow, that is impressive !!!
Daymn!! 🔥
this guy is crazy !
DAMN.
Coooooool!
Grande!

Players this good inspire me and depress me, all at the same time.
Genius
I believe this is an amazing musical feat. I do not believe he has to make this face to accomplish it.
holy fucking shit
keeewll !!!
God, that's good!
whoa...
Never seen anything like this!! Javier Reyes brought me here.

sounds beautiful, like a lesley
He makes me proud to be a fellow member of the human race.
This kind of guys just make you wonder: Who is the best guitarist in the world? What defines a good guitarist? Damn this guy!
When I first saw Charlie play this at Yoshis it changed my life. I agree with Myferrari. Also Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, Prasanna, Nate Lopez....
holy shit !

crazy fingers lol, awsome song and player
Man 's been practicing.
Seems like Pino Palladino and John Scofield somehow managed to melt together.
That would be a sight! ...or a sound... I'll give ya Larry Carton and Chuck Rainey accompanied by Donald Fagen trading licks with Larry. Lol, I’m just messing around, Charlie is one of a kind. He never ceases to amaze.
I'm surprised that he still has got his bottom lip.
Oh my god this cracked me up!! I love charlie but you nailed that lol

This guy was playing 8-string when all other 8-string guys were in diapers. Absolute genius.
WTF! What is this magic!
