Charlie Hunter is a enigma!!! Nobody in the universe has this level of ability as him & his melodic control is out of this world too!! A former student of Joe Satriani & again another genius!!! Charlie Hunter & Steve Vai are like night & day but it just proves what a incredible teacher Joe Satriani is & it's always a pleasure too hear a player who's lightyears ahead of time so you have something to aspire too!!!!
But in one of his interviews, Charlie has got away from all that lead guitar and he treats the guitar as percussion instead. The reason he can play like this is because he plays drums every day and he thinks like an upright bass player also. Satriani influence on Vai is more apparent than Charlie. Plus he is also a fan of classical counter point, while being rooted in jazz, rnb and blues
@@ishta I think the ultimate point you're making and I'm inclined to agree is that what makes Charlie so incredible is the fact that it's this multi-instrumentalist approach brought to this split-output instrument that really creates something special.
tbh i dont really think Satriani can take credit for any of Charlie's skillset but i agree he's a fantastic teacher & its interesting to know Charlie got lessons from him as well. adds to the massive list of legends Satriani is in community with!
@@constantstudies I think the reality is you look at the guys that came out of Berkley in the 70s/80s where Satriani was the guitar teacher in town and the % of successful guitarists is way higher than other towns in that same era. Charlie said in one podcast how basically everyone in town had chops bc of it.
I know this is old, but I saw some people asking about the setlist. To my knowledge: 1. Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead (Charlie Hunter) 0:00 2. Blind Arthur (Charlie Hunter) 4:45 3. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (The Platters) 10:40 4. Ain't We Got Fun (Richard Whiting) 19:50 5. Always Lift Him Up and Never Knock Him Down (Blind Alfred Reed) 28:48 6. This Little Light Of Mine (Traditional) 32:50 7. Just A Closer Walk With Thee (Traditional) 37:00 8. People Make the World Go Round (The Stylistics) 40:40 9. Low Bridge (Traditional) 47:40 Encore: 10. Jealous Guy (John Lennon) 53:28 11. ...not sure about this one...1:01:00 12. Unsure about this one too...kind of sounds like "I Just Want To Make Love To You" or a James Brown tune. He's definitely mixing a few tunes in a sort of medley 1:04:00
This guy is unbelievable, sounds like Cory Henry on guitar in terms of virtuosity on his instrument but also in terms of his preference for gospel, funk and blues music. He also seems to be a nice guy you’d like to hang out with and loaded with drive and positive energy, just outstanding!
I don't have a lot of jazz culture, but I've only found two guitarists that can play all alone for an hour and deliver a "full band" feel performance, one is Charlie Hunter and the other one is Joe Pass
Charlie Hunter is a circus freak in the best way. He deserves a carnival barker inviting you to step right up - must be seen to be believed. That f-ing gospel song at 29min kills me!
Гитарист с двумя половинами мозга работающими независимо друг от друга.И выдающими одно целое, великолепное.Не на что непохожее.Великолепно!Грандиозный музыкант!
Huge Charlie Hunter fan here. I come back here to watch this often and the only words I can manage to say within the first 30 seconds are, “you fucking asshole.” The guy is way to good.
Having an independent thumb on one hand and a couple randomly independent fingers on the other plus playing rhythm and lead all at the same time... that's all there is too it. Oh, and 3 brains.
I believe from the 37:00 mark he is playing “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” Improbably he plays it in the style of 70s Philly soul (cf. Catalyst, “Ain’t It The Truth”)
Little late to the party, but: 'Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead', recorded with Scott Amendola czcams.com/video/CXBuWF9t2IQ/video.html. Album version is wonderful
Does this genius not prove..to the detriment of pagan cultures that GOD IS AMAZING...AND Creativity means ..at it's heart..we are all Created...God is great.

My pleasure!@@madmat01
This is one of the greatest jazz performances I have ever heard; Charlie is just such an amazing musician!
This guy is unbelievable, sounds like Cory Henry on guitar in terms of virtuosity on his instrument but also in terms of his preference for gospel, funk and blues music. He also seems to be a nice guy you’d like to hang out with and loaded with drive and positive energy, just outstanding!
He is all that exactly.
this is my favorite Charlie show on the net - why are more people not seeing this?
"public service to mankind" indeed. This is fantastic!
I was very sad when this was taken down. Thanks for re-uploading!
I'm fascinated by his left hand, but Wow... I can't get over his picking! ♥️
32 minutes in he plays "this little light of mine...Charlie Hunter style. FANTASTIC.
An invisible bass player has been stalking Charlie for decades
I don't have a lot of jazz culture, but I've only found two guitarists that can play all alone for an hour and deliver a "full band" feel performance, one is Charlie Hunter and the other one is Joe Pass
Have you listened to Charlie Byrd?
@@gatoryak7332 I've now, thanks for the recomendation xd
If you don't know Bill Frissell our Julian Lage, they are in that category me.
There several more, but just listen Tuck Andress

Martin Taylor is another.
"Ohne Musik wäre das Leben ein Irrtum" (F. Nietzsche) Charlie Hunter ist der Beweis göttlicher, musikalischer Genialität !!

You're doing God's work
Chuck makes the second best solo faces in the biz. Dean Ween is a solid #1, but this one is a lot of fun.
Holy shit. This is the greatest comment. Deaner is a God. One day I’m gonna buy a red strat and only play it barefoot.
Huge Charlie Hunter fan here. I come back here to watch this often and the only words I can manage to say within the first 30 seconds are, “you fucking asshole.” The guy is way to good.
Thanks for your "public service"
Can you run for office?
mad skill xoxo
The Song is called Charlie Hunter.
thank you soooooooooooooooooooooo mmmmooooohh äh excuse me, sooo much !!!
Holy Smokes!
Wowza.
Une polyphonie melodique....
Tu cherches ses quatre mains!
Having an independent thumb on one hand and a couple randomly independent fingers on the other plus playing rhythm and lead all at the same time... that's all there is too it. Oh, and 3 brains.
47:40 craaaaazzyyy !
This is just genius
The line that starts at @57:35 is unREAL!
Man, what's the deal with that git-box?
The game has started over and Charlie Hunter knows all the moves.
Remind anyone of Larry Carlton?
Charlie invented an entire NEW game
Anyone have the set list?
Down and down ...
hope he'll do a solo album soon
35 minutes in he jams I shall not be moved like. A tree planted by the water I shall not be moved...that's the lyrics
37:21
anyone know the name of that first song?
10:54 smoke gets in your eyes. Reminds me a bit of Bill Frisell.
37 minutes is" just a closer walk with thee"
Fak! CH is a WIZARD! When his face gets intense he even looks a bit like Kelly Slater! Jimi approves! Bravíssimo!
oh lawd
There is someone who know tracks list ???
Just one...
Anyone know the name of the first song
Anybody know what song is going on at 35 minutes through 40 minutes? I feel like its not the tune he introduced when talking around 30 minutes
Its the same song. He's just soloing over the main riff for ad infinitum.
I believe from the 37:00 mark he is playing “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”
Improbably he plays it in the style of 70s Philly soul (cf. Catalyst, “Ain’t It The Truth”)
is there a setlist?
Not that I have access to sorry. I don't remember the original video having one either.
U filmed this ?
No man, I downloaded it to practice to, but then it also disappeared from CZcams, so I uploaded it for everyone else
what is the name of the first song?? plz.
Juan Jose Lopez Ramirez I don't know sorry.
Little late to the party, but: 'Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead', recorded with Scott Amendola czcams.com/video/CXBuWF9t2IQ/video.html. Album version is wonderful
crazy guy. WTF
40:40 man what is this song?!?!
aw finally figured it out. People Make the World Go Round
by O'Donel Levy
What is that guitar? That's not a standard seven string is it?
It's a Novax hybrid guitar pioneered by Charlie
that fat ass bass note at 20:57
This guy doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. He should take some lessons, work on his technique
Three years later and this comment is still retarded
The inherent risks of packing two instruments into one, are on display here. The tone is overburdened and muddy.
I think it's the recording, not the guitar. But thanks for complaining, anyway.
He is actually playing three instruments. Listen carefully.
Bro shut up lol
